AFTERPLAYSTABLE PRODUCTIONS presentsTHE VICTORIAN PREMIERE of LEWIS FIANDER & LYNDEL ROWE in AFTERPLAY by BRIAN FRIEL Directed by MALCOLM ROBERTSON Beautiful and Daring - DAILY TELEGRAPH Theatrical Treat - SYDNEY MORNING HERALD This remarkable play takes us close to the heart of Chekhov - THE GUARDIAN Honoring 100th Anniversary of Anton Chekhov's death - 2nd July 2004 In a small rundown 'Moscow café',Sonya, from Uncle Vanya and Andrey from Three Sisters, come together for a brief encounter, twenty two years after the conclusion of each of their plays. Celebrated International playwright Brian Friel (Dancing at Lughnasa, Molly Sweeney) has lovingly re-animated and re-imagined two of Chekhov's most beloved characters. Each cannot escape the origins gifted to them by Chekhov, but the passing time has adjusted those earlier lives. As in Chekhov, piercing sadness is combined with disarming humour, and Friel portrays Sonya and Andrey as people who are sustained by unquenchable hope. Lovers of literature, and lovers of Chekhov will delight in imagining such a meeting, but the play also appeals to anybody who understands what it is to be human. Two of Australia's most distinguished actors, Lewis Fiander (Private Lives, My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera, Noël and Gertie, The Visit) and Lyndel Rowe (Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, The Real Thing, Old Times) portray Andrey and Sonya in this play of grace, courage and humour. Afterplay is directed by director and actor, MALCOLM ROBERTSON (Kenneth Myer Medallion, Playbox, MTC, St Martins, La Mama).
