VIDEOCONFERENCING - Using the tools Effectively

General Education & Equity Services (GEES) teachers and staff are learning hands on applications of using Videoconference equipment to teach, conduct interviews and meetings via this exciting technology.

There are a number of strategies to apply to make these work effectively. Here are some photos and thoughts from the team working within this Learnscope Project.

Here are some dot point comments from Helen at the Narrabri campus. Helen did the 3 day teaching via video conferernce program with Carol.

*Learnt who to contact and when in order to organize videoconferening, and how to set up and use the equipment.

*Also learnt how organized you would need to be if you were to use the full potential of the equipment.

*Issues were how underused this facility is within this institute and how it could and should be used a lot more to cut down on travel and costs.

*Managed to plan and deliver a short mock lesson via videoconference by the end of the session
Very interactive and hands on sessions

* Culling for interviews (recruitment) could be done via this technology using the document camera to look at applications

* Have linked up with students of English between Inverell and Narrabri for a discussion about oral presentations via videoconference.

* For exposing students to others and a larger cohort of students doing the same subject it is good and I can see myself using it for this.

Leonie sent in this feedback comment:-

The workshop was very useful, particulary as part time teacher interviews were conducted via videoconference a couple of weeks later. We had a trial link up, a few days before the interviews, which really reinforced what we had learnt at the workshop. Our training ensured we were able to portray a professional approach to the interview process via videoconference.

This webpage was produced by Vivian Evans with valuable input from GEES Learnscope team members & our trainer Carol Daunt. Many thanks All :-)

Hints for videoconferencing interviews

This webpage was created collaboratively by Leonie & Viv using 'Writely' a free software program that allows you to share creation of a 'word' document online. We give reflections on our experiences and practice & list some hints for supporting the interviewee. We hope ou find it useful

Tricks up our sleeve
TTTT... Tools that goes with the Tips, Tricks & Techniques
Carol Daunt our facilitator for the day
Carol was a dynamic facilitator - here she is showing us to watch out for making facial expressions -The camera sees all.
Stripes are definitely out!
Leonie is modelling what not to wear! When videoconferencing you need to consider the right clothing to make yourself 'easier on the eye' for those at the other end of the connection. Not only what you wear but what is in the background... do you blend into the wall behind you? Blue (such as our background of this webpage) is considered a good backdrop.
Geraldine demonstrating the document feeder
This tool is incredible useful and even in the same room writing on paper on the document feeder was better than the whiteboard and you had a permanent record. Here Geraldine is using the pointer ( a highly technical wooden skewer) pointing to fine features on a computer mother board - the image on the tv screen was amazing
A Computer 'mother board' via the document camera
Carol used this item to demonstrate how clearly you can see items via the document camera... This is what Geraldine is pointing too in the photo above

Team members - Please feel free to send me comments on the workshops and follow up experiences - just a few sentences will do so I can make this a collaborative website. Photos would be great - if you have some please send to email address above
