The Coonabarabran Waratah Guides were very lucky to have Helen Abbott join 2 of their unit meetings to share her experiences and knowledge of Japanese culture. Helen spent 8 months last year living and teaching English in Yokohama/Tokyo, Japan. Helen taught a wide range of students from age 2 to 80 years old.

The girls learnt how to dress in a 'Yukata' (a cotton outfit worn for festive days – not as formal as the ‘kimono’). They practiced dressing each other in the yukata, tying an ‘Obi’ and wearing ‘gedha’ (thong like footwear)

The taste buds were not left out of this cultural exploration with ‘miso’ soup on the evening’s menu.

The girls had some fun learning how to use chopsticks and then took on the challenge of picking up lollies with their chopsticks… definitely putting their newly learnt skills to the test with sweet rewards for success.

Celia Cameron taught the girls the skill of origami and the girls made ‘water bombs’ out of paper and ‘Yes they worked!’
