| My husband (Brian) & I were standing outside watching the many layers of cloud moving really quickly... wondering if we were going to get more hail. We soon realised that two storms were converging and then they started to spiral!
The spiral got bigger and bigger so I raced for the camera and took these shots. We estimated that this great funnel was almost stationary for 20 minutes. (We did not think to look at the clock at the time... too busy wondering what it was going to do next!) We had had large hailstones just prior to seeing this formation. So far we know of one tree fallen down the road but have yet to talk to neighbours to see what, if any damage occured. (This para was written 2 days after the event(22.1.05) we were soon to learn much more about the damage - to discover what damage it did follow the links below) It was amazing to watch it form and wish I had the camera at that point, in time to catch the build up to this amazing phenomenon. Tornado near Coonabarabran 2005 Jan 20 This website has all the details of the tornado. A must see!! It has lots of details re the path & results with photos, maps & sketches. Put together by Rob McNaught, Tanya Smith and Gordon Garradd who are all volunteer storm spotters for the Bureau of Meterology. Brian & I have had great pleasure working with them to find out more about this amazing phenomenon.
