GAWLER VIEW CLUB’S 8TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF “SPRING”
Gawler celebrated with 76 friends on Monday 22 August their 8th VIEW Club Birthday. Among the visitors were Brian Sambel, the Mayor of Gawler, David Pedler representing Ton y Piccolo MP, Matthew Wurfel representing Nick Champian MP, Velda Atkinson SA National Councillor, Erica Kakoschke ZC SA02, Margaret Stephenson, Development Team Leader, representatives from Kiwanis, Zonta and the Gawler Women’s Health Service. VIEW Clubs represented were Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Pioneer, Tea Tree Gully, Adelaide City Evening, Adelaide West, Southern Vales, Holdfast Evening, Marion, and Victor Harbor and of course Gawler.
All guests received a decorated flower on a stick as they came in the door and received a copy of the “Friendship Bouquet” given to all VIEW friends with love.
Certificates of Appreciation were given to Rosemary Taylor for the beautiful double bed quilt she made and donated, Lyn Leske and Stan Shields for the chauffer service they supply every year from the train, Tony Piccolo for all the photo copying, Dara for the Gawler Arms who continue to do an amazing job, Grace Harrison for supplying a painting for every birthday and organising the monthly raffles, Lyn O’Brien who is able to get donations from the local business people in Gawler, and Christine Doecke for all the beautiful “crafty things” she continually makes. Thankyou to Norma Hamilton and her committee for putting together the Spring theme for the birthday.

Jacqui Marks, the President, cut the huge sponge birthday cake. Velda Atkinson spoke briefly and we were then entertained by Miss Debbie in a display of belly dancing. Miss Debbie is a classical dance teacher. We were then entertained by the Gawler U3A Ukulele group “The Gurus” in a great singalong of a variety of songs. They came dressed in the theme of spring as well.
Many members of VIEW came dressed in “Spring” flowered dresses and lovely hats and flowers.
As always there were lucky dips and dozens and dozens of raffle prizes supplied by the members who are so generous for our birthday every year.

In 2010 our 7th Birthday was celebrated by 'Christmas in August' - we even had Santa Claus visit and many ladies enjoyed sitting on his knee whilst whispering their Christmas wishes!!! Another great Birthday celebrated in the style as only Gawler can do!

2009 saw us celebrate our 6th Birthday with a 'Black & White' theme - an excellent time was had by all.

The Gawler VIEW Club celebrated its 5th Birthday on 25th August 2008. We were delighted with the number of guests from other VIEW Clubs who came to help us celebrate by having 'A Day At The Races', thank you very much.

Our Master of Ceremonies for the day was 'The Clerk of The Course', Erica Kakoschke; Peter Goers from ABC Radio and Sunday Mail columnist was the guest speaker; and we were also pleased that both the Member for Light, Mr Tony Piccolo MP, and the Mayor of Gawler, Mr Brian Sambell, were able to attend and both gave a brief congratulatory speech. National Councillor, Heather Temby, and Zone Councillor, Velda Atkinson, were also special guests and gave very encouraging speeches. Following the Pledge and Grace, a delicious three course meal was served. Our Birthday cake consisted of little cup cakes decorated in a horse-racing theme. A tiny cake was cut by Heather Temby, Velda Atkinson and Helen Hurst.

Peter Goers was highly entertaining with his wit, reminiscences, and observations of life in general, and we were very grateful that he gave of his time so willingly and freely.

Our table decorations consisted of balloons with racing horses depicted displayed in a bottle with multi-coloured curling ribbons; four-leafed clovers and horseshoes for luck; gold chocolate coins; assorted horsey scatters and plastic horses; jockey caps; and a beautifully decorated gold horseshoe on each table. The menus were inside cards depicting a beautiful horse. Various jockey silks and horse racing memorabilia was placed around the room and on the walls.

We had a quilt raffle, a general raffle, and sweep tickets available for sale, as well as a free door prize. The numerous prizes were all supplied by Gawler VIEW Club Members. Most of the presents were wrapped in TAB Guide newspaper racing forms in keeping with the theme for the day.

Mayor Brian Sambell was a Judge for the 'Fashions Of The Field' and 'Best Hat' parade.

Two ladies from the Barossa Valley presented a highly amusing skit. Various Club Members dressed for the occasion in racing garb, with special mention of Joy Standish who rode her horse in jockey silks, and of Lesley Stacey from the Southern Vales Club who dressed as a male bookmaker, moustache and all!

With much anticipation, it was time for the 'True Blue VIEW Gawler Cup' handicap race of 3,000 metres. Margaret Stephenson gave a thrilling phantom race call for the sweep, and after a protest was dismissed, and correct weight was called, prizes for the first, second and third sweep winners were given.

VIEW Members having a Birthday were acknowledged with a gift of a handkerchief. Our Club President, Helen Hurst, was presented with flowers on the occasion of her 25th Anniversary in VIEW – a great milestone Helen, congratulations!

Thanks to all the Club Members who helped at the fun-filled busy-bee the month before and also to those Members who helped set up the room the day before our Birthday. Thanks too to everyone who provided the raffle and sweep prizes.

A special big thank you to our party organiser, Erica Kakoschke. The effort Erica puts in to making our Birthdays so successful is incredible. She gets us all organised, and manages to bring it all together on the day with such grace and good spirit. Well done Erica, and thanks again for making our Birthdays the wonderful annual events they are.
