Capital city trail and The Farran vintage bicycle collection, Sunday 27th August 2006
A group of 8 riders met at Docklands at 10pm. Robert W :direct drive low racer, John K: Xevon, Austin seperatable upright, Ludo & Renild: home built tandem, George: Swift trike, John R: original swb, Roy gt 3.
We set off along Footscray Rd and took the path north besides Moonee Ponds Creek that follows under Citylink bypass, smooth and wide, just how a multi-use path should be. Then up and over Flemington Rd to the Manningham steps (which we now know can be bypassed, thanks George).
We scoot around Royal Park to Melbourne Zoo where we regroup and pick up Peter: gt 3 & Shirley: upright (but for how long??) Continuing along through to the inner suburbs of Brunswick and Fitzroy to Rushall station where the track drops down to and winds its way along side Merri Creek.
It's hard to believe that you are only a few Ks from the CBD when following this creek, just glorious. A quick stop at The Collingwood Children's Farm and the preaching starts of the virtues of riding recumbent's to the unconverted of our group. Chris: gt3 had joined us at this stage to take our numbers to 11.
A suitable rotunda is located for a lunch stop and we realize that we are 11/2 hours ahead of time. A caffeine fix is need to fill in some time and we all head off to Como Park to see if the establishment in question is in fact open again, to which it is. It was commented that about half a dozen tandems (not including Ludo & Renild) have been seen during the day which is always great to see. Enough time had been wasted so we all made our way to Richmond for the climax (for some) of the trip, The Farren private bicycle collection.
The only thing I can say about this vintage bicycle collection is "YOU MUST GO",
when you get the opportunity the pictures don't do this collection justice. One visit is not enough, when can we go again Robert.
After being kicked out ( not really) some of our group made their ways home while the rest of us headed back to the bike path and followed the Yarra River through the city trying to keep away from the crowds on Southbank. I'm not sure how we got back to Docklands but we did and the end of a great 40k ish ride, topped off with a must see museum visit and some (but does that mean not all) great company. Thanks to everyone who attended and don't miss out if the group does it again.
