Pedal-Powered Vehicles Workshop
Summer workshop making pedal-power work 30 Jan - 17 February 06
1st call for participation
The workshop has a practical focus on designing and building prototypes of pedal-powered vehicles, with the aim of stimulating engagement in the possibilities of pedal power for Melbourne. The workshop will culminate in the presentation of vehicles at a forum for Melbourne transportation and sustainability stakeholders, and a parade through the Sustainable Living Festival.
The team pedalling the workshop includes Indian designer Shreya Gadepalli whose improvements to rickshaws in India and becaks in Indonesia are empowering thousands of peoples lives; New York based Matteo Martignoni whose pedal-powered vehicle experience includes aerodynamic land speed record vehicles and amphibious vehicles; and Cultural Transports artist Mick Douglas.
Participation is invited from designers, bicycle enthusiasts and mechanics, pedal power and sustainability advocates, new service entrepreneurs, or anyone who just has to get involved pedalling. Join in to make vehicles and meet people who want to make pedal-powered work.
The workshop is being held in the mornings for 3 weeks in central Melbourne from 30th Jan to 17 Feb.
Places in the workshop are limited. For more info visit http://pedalpvw.blogspot.com

Bike lanes
Ever been cut off while ridng in a bike lane? Wondering what the rules are? This is taken from Vic Roads web site. Note, a driver includes a motorbike rider as well as car driver.
- A driver (except the rider of a bicycle) must not drive in a bicycle lane, unless the driver is permitted to drive in the bicycle lane under this rule or rule 158.
- If stopping or parking is not prohibited at a place in a bicycle lane, a driver may drive for up to 50 metres in the bicycle lane to stop or park at that place.
- A driver may drive for up to 50 metres in a bicycle lane if the driver is driving a public bus, public minibus, or taxi, and is dropping off or picking up, passengers.
- A bicycle lane is a marked lane, or the part of a marked lane-
- beginning at a bicycle lane sign applying to the lane; and
- ending at the nearest of the following-
- an end bicycle lane sign applying to the lane;
- an intersection (unless the lane is at the unbroken side of the continuing road at a T-intersection or continued across the intersection by broken lines);
- if the road ends at a dead end-the end of the road.

OzHpv Spectacular in Broadford, April 2/3 2005
CHECK THE RESULTS HERE!
Australia´s national Human Powered Vehicle Organization, OzHpv has held races at the state motorcycling Centre in Broadford, Victoria for the last 3 years. The track is set on a scenic Hillside, 70k north of Melbourne, camping is available at the track, and it´s free for spectators.
The OzHpv Spectacular in Broadford is a chance for cycles banned from most cycling races (recumbents, trikes and streamlined vehicles) since the 1930´s to compete against each other in a wide variety of events, and to socialize and compare vehicles. It´s great, fun, family friendly cycling.
OzHpv is a not-for profit organization promoting Human Powered Vehicles in Australia and is part of the International HPV Association (IHPVA)

CAN ANYONE HELP?????? BOAT
I live in Melbourne and have an interest in pedal powered boats. Are there any of the OzHPV members who have an interest in water craft rather than road vehicles? I have attached a photo of my 4th version of the boat and am now building version 6. There seems to be a lot of interest in the USA but not so much in Australia. I believe it is more enjoyable than either cycling or kayaking. Basically a combination of both. Rick Willoughby Email: rickwill@bigpond.net.au Phone: 61 (0)3 9769 2190

Why you should bring your partner to "Be Spontaneous" rides!
On Sunday morning, a bent rider gets up early, as he has for so many Sunday morning 'Be Spontaneous' rides, and softly slips out of the bedroom. He dressesquietly in the next room, grabs his helmet and water bottles, and goes out to pump the tires. As the garage door opens, he's confronted by an icy,windswept rain. He's ridden before in these conditions. He doesn't like it, but when it's Sunday morning he never misses. He ponders the dismalconditions and then retreats to the kitchen to tune a small TV to the Weather Channel. The forecast only sounds worse. This is one Sunday whenhe just can't summon the determination. With a sigh, he slips off his shoes, quietly returns to the bedroom, undresses and slips back into bed. There hecuddles up to his wife's back and whispers, "The weather out there is terrible." To which she sleepily replies, "Can you believe my husband went riding in that crap?"
