| RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging * Never chalk or enhance engravings * Do not walk on engraved rock * Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are * Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps Three Rivers rock art site is easily accesible (by car) from Carrizozo, Tularosa or Alamogordo in New Mexico. From a pleasant picnic area a trail leads across the higher parts of the ridge to a ramada that can be very welcome when it is hot and sunny, especialy because it is very hard to find a shaded spot elsewhere on the ridge that stretches for about 2 km. Beyond the ramada are many more rock art concentrations and - indeed - some of the best images (my thanks are due to Denis Slifer for informing me about those concentrations at the north end). To the west of the ridge is an isolated, small hillock with another interesting concentration of petroglyphs. It is hard not to look at a boulder or outcrop and not to see a petroglyph. In places almost every stone has a mark or an elaborate petroglyph. There are more than 20.000 image representing zoomorphs, anthropomorphs, masks or faces, geometrics and many other designs. We are grateful to Ann Owen and Robert Dragon for taking us to Three Rivers and for guiding us around for two fantastic days. Especially the enormous lunches that Ann produced were very welcome after the intensive hikes and intensive sunshine. |
