ROCK ART SITES OF SOUTH PERU

Maarten van Hoek Updated September 2006

RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging, especially to rock paintings
* NEVER chalk or enhance petroglyphs
* Do not walk on engraved rock
* Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are
* Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps

VISIT MICULLA

Miculla is one of the major petroglyph sites in southern Peru. Unfortunately it is very well signposted but not supervised and suffers from vandalism and robbery.

VISIT THE MAJES VALLEY AND TORO MUERTO

The beautiful Majes Valley houses the biggest concentration of rock art in the whole of Peru. There are many little known sites, but also the biggest site of Peru, Toro Muerto, is situated in this area.

VISIT THE PALPA VALLEY

In an area better known for its geoglyphs, like those of Nasca and Palpa, are also many petroglyph sites.

VISIT THE PISCO VALLEY

The Pisco Valley is a major through route and for that reason has a number of archaeological sites; also some interesting rock art sites.

VISIT HUANCOR

Hard to reach is the important site of Huancor with its many layers of rock art traditions.
