ROCK ART SITES IN NORTH PERU

Maarten van Hoek Updated September 2006

RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging, especially to rock paintings
* NEVER chalk or enhance petroglyphs
* Do not walk on engraved rock
* Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are
* Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps

VISIT CERRO MULATO

This is a very fine and quiet petroglyph site that has suffered little despite the fact that it is immediately north of a small town.

VISIT THE VALLEY OF THE RIVER JEQUETEPEQUE

In this beautiful valley are many rock art sites; some only recently discovered. The best known of the sites in this area is Yonan.

VISIT THE MOCHE AND VIRU VALLEYS

Many archaeological remains in this area seem to indicate an important inland route leading from the Moche Valley to the Viru Valley and vice versa. The best known rock art site in this area is Alto de la Guitarra, located just outside the Moche watershed, high up in the mountains.

VISIT CERRO SECHIN

Awesome imagery is found at this ancient Temple, though it is not really rock art, as the images were executed onto worked blocks of granite. Nevertheless this is one of the most impressive sites that I have seen in Peru.

VISIT CHECTA

An important petroglyph site, unfortunately much vandalised, as it is located very near a main road from Lima. There is a large signpost, a car park, but no supervision.

VISIT A CHAVIN PETROGLYPH SITE IN NORTH PERU

This petroglyph site is very vulnerable as it is situated in the midst of a large archaeological complex with many ancient burial tombs that all seem to have been robbed. For that reason, the location will not be revealed here.
