CHECTA - PERU

Maarten van Hoek Updated September 2006

RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging, especially to rock paintings
* NEVER chalk or enhance petroglyphs
* Do not walk on engraved rock
* Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are
* Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps

CHECTA BECOMES INCREASINGLY VANDALISED BECAUSE THE SITE IS CLEARLY SIGNPOSTED AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM THE ROAD. EVEN A PARKING PLACE HAS BEEN MADE TO FACILITATE ACCESS. BUT HIGH UP AT THE SITE THERE IS NO SUPERVISION

ANDEAN TIME-CHART

Checta probably has petroglyphs mainly dating from the Chavin Period including local elements of the archaic culture of Canta. Consult the time chart.
