| RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging * Never chalk or enhance engravings * Do not walk on engraved rock * Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are * Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps Strewn around the talus slopes of Cedar Point are many large and smaller boulders that have tumbled down from Cedar Mesa cliff edge. Many of those boulders bear petroglyphs of the Basketmaker Period or earlier. As usual there are many zoomorphs, handprints and anthropomorphs but also many abstract designs and rows of small dots. The third photo shows some interesting features such as a hand with seven digits, a possible female figure executed around a probably natural hole and an upside down anthropomorph. Very special (4th photo) is the large boulder that was decorated when it was in another position. After that the boulder tumbled down the slope leaving the petroglyphs of anthropomorphs in a horizontal position while later other image were added in the normal (vertical) position. The site can be reached - with local help - from Mexican Hat or Bluff, but is hard to find. I recommend to contact Vaughn Hadenfeldt of Far Out ExpeditionS to be informed about a guided tour to this and other rock art sites in southern Utah and northern Arizona (use the link below to visit his web site). We are grateful to Vaughn for guiding us to this rock art site. |
