| RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging * Never chalk or enhance engravings * Do not walk on engraved rock * Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are * Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps Box Canyon is just a very small part of the South Mountains, a Municipal Park that is almost completely engulfed by the city of Phoenix (first photo). It is also conveniently close to the Educational Centre where a lot of information is available. We visited Box Canyon in July 2005 when it was extremely hot (about 43 degrees Celcius) and therefore we only managed to stay in the canyon for about 3 hours. Then we were exhausted, even though we brought 3 litres of (salted) water each. The rock art in South Mountains Park mainly was made by the ancient Hohokam people and includes zoomorphs, anthropomorphs, many spirals and other geometrics. On the NW side of Box Canyon is Bird Hill (second photo) so called because of the panel with water birds (third photo), although there are more petroglyph panels at Bird Hill (fourth photo - notice the double-triangle anthropomorph). At the far east end of Box Canyon is a petroglyph panel that features two images of Gila monsters, the well known lizard from the Arizona desert. The fainter example is between the clear Gila monster and the large spiral (last photo). |
