| RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging * Never chalk or enhance engravings * Do not walk on engraved rock * Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are * Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps The area around Bluff is dominated by the canyon of the San Juan River and its side canyons. Huge sandstone cliffs and stacks dot the landscape. The Bluff area also can boast a number of interesting rock art sites, some of which are hard to find and to reach (a local guide then is essential) or can only be reached by boat from Sand Island. It is also possible to make longer trips from Bluff, for instance to Monument Valley on the border of Utah and Arizona. The photo below shows a detail of a rock art panel in the Bluff area where three diffrent uses of the rock can be seen. First there is the pecked figurative and geometric art; second, there are large anthropic holes, possibly cupules, and third, there are a number of ovalish and smoothly abraded depressions. Because these are on a vertical wall they cannot have been used for grinding purposes. PHOTO BY DUKE HAYDUKE, BLUFF (2005). REPRODUCED HERE WITH HIS KIND PERMISSION. |
