LA BARRANCA - VALLE DE MAJES

Maarten van Hoek September 2006
The petroglyps of La Barranca are found next to the main road through the Majes Valley. For that reason many of the 30 or so engraved blocks of stone are heavily vandalised, mainly with paint. The photo shows the boulder that is located very near the road. Paint is visible at the lower part of the stone. The (very faint) images belong to the same style that is found at Toro Muerto, but also at the coast near Camana and near Chuquibamba, much further inland.

RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES
* Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging, especially to rock paintings
* NEVER chalk or enhance petroglyphs
* Do not walk on engraved rock
* Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are
* Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps
