ROCK ART PAPERS - FIRST SERIES - 2003: UPSIDE-DOWN IMAGERY

Maarten van Hoek December 2003
THIS SECTION OF MY WEB SITES OFFERS A SELECTION OF ROCK ART PAPERS DEALING WITH A SPECIAL TOPIC: INVERTED IMAGERY IN ROCK ART. SEVERAL THEORETICAL ASPECTS ARE BEING DISCUSSED AS WELL AS SOME SPECIFIC SITES WITH INVERTED IMAGERY.

AT THE END OF EACH PAPER THE READER IS INVITED TO COMMENT ON THE INFORMATION AND - WITH PERMISSION, OF COURSE - THESE COMMENTS WILL BE ADDED TO THE PAPER. READERS ARE ALSO INVITED TO SUBMIT INFORMATION ABOUT ROCK ART FEATURING SPECIFIC INVERTED IMAGERY.

AS THE MC2 WEB GENERATOR ONLY PERMITS 5 IMAGES ON EACH WEB PAGE, IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO SPREAD THE TEXT AND GRAPHICS OVER A NUMBER OF PAGES. I APOLOGISE FOR ANY CONVENIENCE IN THIS RESPECT.

ROCK ART PAPER 1

This is a theoretical paper offering a model to ascertain the degree of inversion on a rock art panel, followed by a summary of possible interpretations of inverted imagery.

ROCK ART PAPER 2

Rock Art Paper 2 deals with the rock art site of Rosario, northern Chile, where, surprisingly all bird petroglyphs appear to be depicted upside-down. It is suggested in this paper that this phenomenon MIGHT be related to a severe El NiƱo.

ROCK ART PAPER 3

This short paper may be regarded as a sequel to the Rosario paper and suggests that two inverted bird petroglyphs near Arica, Chile, represent instances of imitation of earlier rock art symbolism.
