Cycling

Cycling Technique
If you are cycling long distances it is a good idea to invest in some toe-clips or cleated pedals and shoes. These hold your foot in the proper position on the pedal with the ball of your foot over the central axle of the pedal. They also allow you to generate power in your foots pulling action in addition to pushing down on the pedal. Riding a cycle therefore becomes a kind of jogging motion.
It is commonly accepted that the most efficient use of energy for cycling is around 80 revolutions (of the pedal crank) per minute. Most cyclists should aim to maintain rapid cycling on easier gears rather than slow motion on tough gears.

Hygiene
It is very tempting when you are camping or cycling to neglect cleanliness.
Cycling produces a lot of sweat.
Sweat by itself is an odourless liquid. The smell is produced by bacteria on the skin.
Therefore odour is an indication of uncleanliness.
Covering the odour with a perfume will not be healthy because the bacteria still exist.
VACT recommends taking a shower everyday at recreation centres, service stations etc.
If this isn't possible try sponge bathing from wash basins.
Another option is to use antibacterial wet wipes.
Antibacterial oils such as tea-tree oil can be rubbed into the skin to discourage bacterial growth. This also discourages the formation of saddle sores which occur from constant pressure and the presence of bacteria.
