BELGRAVE SOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOL 1870-2007

THE EARLY YEARS
Notes courtesy of Helen Coulson's Story of the Dandenongs

The Belgrave South School will celebrate its centenary in 2007. Our story starts in Mrs Sophie Giles' dining room in 1907. It was then that a school in the area was formally established.

The district had first been settled in 1870. At that time there was no roads, schools or places of worship. Belgrave South was linked to Narre Warren by a bullock track that meandered between the trees.

The Giles family came to live in the district in 1903. She was a qualified teacher. She opened her large dining room to 16 pupils on the 8th July 1907. Substantial facilities were now being established in the district.
