Hilson Builders Sprint Series 2009-2010
Celine Mountjoy became the Hilson Builders sprint series champion for the 2009-10 athletics season.
Athletes raced in ideal conditions at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.
The first final was over the 150-metre distance.
Limit markers Felicity Trew and Celine Mountjoy began well.
Trew gained the early lead, but Geoff Jordan didn’t get the best of starts as Greg Hilson and Darryl Nettleton quickly ran past him with Lonain Burnett and Kaine Leech chasing hard.
Trew still led approaching the finishing straight from Mountjoy, Keely Trew and Greg Hilson putting in a strong finish.
Sticking to the inside running, Mountjoy surged through in the shadows of the post to beat Felicity Trew and Greg Hilson.
Also racing on the pole line, Nettleton fought on to be fourth.
So close was the finish that the first six runners crossed the line in less than a second.
The 300-metre event was the decider for the sprint series champion.
Felicity Trew again led the way but was soon overtaken by Mountjoy near the scoreboard.
Mountjoy ran strongly and went on to clinch the title.
Runner-up in the 300m was Burnett from Hilson and Nettleton.
In the consolation events, the 150m was fought out by the youngsters.
Sam Nettleton had his first win in the series from Jake Hilson and backmarker, Eaglehawk’s Grant Astall.
In the 300m, the talented Demi Goodall-Hoffman raced away for an impressive win from Astall and Liam Clarke.

RetireInvest Distance Series
THE final heat in the RetireInvest distance series will be raced over 1600m tonight at the Tom Flood Sports Centre in Bendigo.
The athletics event is run in conjunction with the Bendigo Cycling Club’s track racing.
Athletes will be vying to qualify for the distance series final to be contested on Thursday, February 28.
This summer’s aggregate points winner will be decided in tonight’s race.
One point separates the top two, with three other athletes level on points a further three points down.
Points are allocated on the basis of 3-2-1 for the winner and placegetters, with all starters gaining a further five points for a start-finish.
Lonain Burnett has scored 49 points and leads Peter Cowell 48 and Rick Ermel, Demi Goodall-
Hoffman and Brenton Hassett on 45.
Cowell must run two places ahead of Burnett to win or one place to equal, provided Burnett doesn’t run a place.
Most consistent at the 1600m distance this season have been Rick Ermel, Peter Cowell and Craig Green, but handicaps make the difference, with Green giving the other two a start.
Virginia Bennett is in top form, and Austin Beamish is fighting back from an injury-ravaged summer.
If they start, backmarkers Tim McCullagh and Andy Buchanan will again team up to chase their rivals.
