Ararat Social Justice Network
This group was formed in response to a perceived need to reflect upon the existance of injustice in our society, to consider ways to challenge the situation in order to improve the lives of those effected and, when possible, to take action.
While the group is grounded in Christian values, it is non-denominational and welcomes all interested persons. A continued liason with the justice and democracy group at Marian College is desirable, as members have found the enthusiasm of youth to be motivating.
Meetings will take place on a monthly basis. Currently they are held at 5.00pm on the third Tuesday of each month at Sicilians.
Membership should be open to all who are interested in peace and social justice, and who feel a need to consider and reflect upon these concepts, to discuss them and take some action.
This group will meet to investigate ways of pursuing peace and justice in our community and in the wider world. Discussion of current issues of concern to members is an essential element of the group's purpose and, while it may not always be the case, a decision to take some action which has been agreed to be appropriate may result.
Such actions may include letter writing to politicians and the media, making information available to community groups such as Ararat's faith communities and organizing appeals through these same faith groups.
The group may decide to affiliate itself with a larger organization such as Amnesty International, Rural Australians for Refugees, The Australian Council of Churches Peace Group or the Catholic Social Justice Commission, so that members can be more effectively informed. This may also add more impact to any action taken.
