Applicants were chosen on the basis of their written application explaining why they wanted to attend the tour. Day 1: We departed Orbost in the morning and drove up the very windy Bonang Road towards Bonang. We stopped at Wilson Creek for an essential break and to marvel at the rainforest. We saw a lot of Lyrebirds. Some of the crew were a little motion sick but did very well as we drove along narrow mountain roads to our first destination, Tubbut Primary School. TPS only has 3 students and 1 teacher! Even though small they put on a big welcome with cakes, scones and lots of nibbles and drinks. Thank you Tubbut! After we had eaten we took a water sample from the Deddick River, just behind the school, and tested its water quality. We continued along the very windy mountain road until we arrived at the famous bridge across the Snowy River called McKillops Bridge. Mr Wing Hagger from the DSE met us their and gave us a great talk on how the DSE is managing the Snowy River National Park and removing woody weeds such as the willow. After the talk we took a water sample from the Snowy River just upstream of McKillops Bridge and tested the water quality. After using the local (rather smelly) |
