The State Government in December 2008 finally listened to the needs of the community and committed to build the Rail extension from Epping to South Morang.

However an extension only to the suburb of South Morang is no longer far enough. Due to the expanding estates in South Morang, Mernda and Doreen, a commitment to build a rail extension to Mernda is not only essential but vital. According to the City of Whittlesea statistical forecast Mernda and Doreen's population will rise from 10,000 in 2010, to 20,000 by 2014 and 40,000 by 2027.

The SMMRA focus is now on getting a firm commitment from all political parties to extend to Mernda, and to complete this railway project by 2014.

First reports are in and the station is a roaring success. However problems already exist with the buses that link with the train. It is reported that the buses at the evening peak are full and not all customers can get aboard and have to wait 20 minutes for the next bus.
