George Bass Bicentenary
Celebrations for the George Bass Bicentenary January 1998
The South Eastern Historical Association was established in 1965 following a number of seeding meetings held throughout the area of south east Melbourne, in the suburbs comprising societies from the former cities of Moorabbin, Mordialloc, Chelsea, Springvale, Dandenong, Frankston and Mornington. These have now been amalgamated into cities of Bayside, GlenEira, Kingston, Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula Shire.

Local history historian of note at the time, Tom Sheehy, from Moorabbin, the Hon Hector Roy Ward MLC for South Eastern Province in the Legislative Council in the Victorian Parliament, and Frank McGuire of Chelsea were notable community workers among others involved in the formation of the group.

The group was the first regional group established in Victoria as far as we know, and now consists of approximately 30 societies and historical groups listed following this. The region was one of the regions established by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria to promote local history groups throughout Victoria on a regional basis, and give societies forming at the time a focus for their groups activities outside their local areas.

The group was named after the then Victorian Upper House province covering the area of Moorabbin to Chelsea, the South Eastern Province. This name was recently abolished in the 2002 State Redistribution of boundaries.

Successful programs run by the region include many discovery schools to places both internal and external to the region, the hosting of two RHSV State Conferences at Mornington in 1994 and French Island in 2002. The successful celebration of the bi-centenary celebrations in 1998 of the discovery of Western Port Bay by George Bass in his whaleboat, and the 2002 celebrations for the discovery of Port Phillip Bay by Matthew Flinders in 1802 including a visit by the Lady Nelson. We ran the first regional curator program held in Victoria and are currently promoting membership to a wide range of groups including local government, family history and other interested groups in the region.

Current membership of the region covers the area from Charman Road Mentone, the Kingston Boundary, and follows the coast of Port Phillip Bay and the Mornington Peninsula, to Phillip Island up to Inverloch in the Bass Coast Shire. Also the inland areas of Casey City and Cardinia Shire.
