LATEST NEWS Music from the Wetlands was held on Sunday 13 April 2008 at 1 View St, Alphington. Many members of the local community had a wonderful day enjoying great musical talent in a wetlands setting. Planning is underway for the 2009 Music from the Wetlands Festival. Conatct us if you wish to be involved as an organiser, sponsor or performer. A major Alphington Park revegetation project is underway. The upper part of the south facing slope to the Yarra River had safety, access and maintenance issues that needed resolving. A program is underway to replace the lawn by native shrubs, tress and grasses. Around 9,000 will be used in this revegetation project. Mulch spreading will be done soon followed by first planting in June 2008. A major new project is ensuring the community is well represented in the process to plan and develop the Amcor mill site after Amcor completes its intended relocation to New South Wales. Amcor has announced they expect to cease business at the Fairfield Mill in 2011. It is expected that the site will be sold and redeveloped. A working group separate to the SAFCA committee has already been formed - convenor is Jeff Katz. An initial public meeting is planned for June - watch this site for details. -------------------------------------------------- ABOUT SAFCA SAFCA represents the people who live, work or own property in Alphington and Fairfield south of Heidelberg Road. It was formed in 1995 to give local people a voice in the City of Yarra and to represent their views at the community, local government and state levels. SAFCA stands for the maintenance of a strong sense of community, with a tradition of participation, co-operation and self-help by local people and seeks to build on these strengths. SAFCA believes that local people must have a say in the provision of government services and facilities and in the planning and development of Fairfield and Alphington, its parks, waterways and environs. It also believes that there must be a balance between the interests of local residents and wider state and national considerations, in the development of Fairfield and Alphington. Where issues affecting residents in the City of Yarra also affect residents in neighbouring municpalities, SAFCA seeks to actively involve all those with a stake in the issue. Membership is open to all people who live, work or own property in the area and is free.
