The award-winning book
Marie Alafaci has worked in retail, training and communication and has broad experience in management and public speaking.
In 1995 she left the corporate world to pursue a career in writing and completed a Diploma of Arts - Professional Writing & Editing at Holmesglen TAFE the next year.
During 1995 she recorded a radio history of Loy’s Lemonade which was broadcast on community radio and in 1996 was author in residence at Rosanna primary school.
Marie has guest lectured for the CAE in non-fiction and taught in the professional writing and editing course at Holmesglen TAFE between the births of her two children.
She writes picture story books and won a mentorship with the Australian Society of Authors in 2002 to work on one of them.
Her two most recent publications are: Crystal Clear – Water Pollution in Australia (Reed) and Savage Cows & Cabbage Leaves – an Italian life (Hale & Iremonger), which was category finalist in the 2000 ‘Italy in the World Awards’, and was awarded an Honourable Mention by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria in the ‘Victorian Community History Awards’, also in 2000.
Marie's writing interests include complementary health, the environment, biography, picture story books and children’s fantasy. Her interest in children's literature comes from studying to be a secondary school English teacher and discovering ‘Playing Beatie Bow’ and ‘The Chocolate War’ in third year. She didn’t know books for young people could be so completely child-centred without being patronising. Since then she has read as much children’s literature as she can.
Marie lives in Melbourne with her husband, a four year old daughter and a fifteen month old son. She loves to cook, ride her bike and play the piano (but not all at the same time).
