Marysville Update

Mary Kenealy - Marysville & District Historical Society

We are here so the Story will still be Told
Could this be our new motto which used to be
Visit Life in the Past Lane

We will be doing much more than this.

Part of our brief from State Government is to tell the Black Saturday bushfire story and record the ongoing story.

Artefacts and memorabilia are coming to us from all over Australia and internationally. The name Marysville resonates with everyone one who has ever visited our beautiful area.

Contacts have been made with all the Marysvilles world wide. Support has also come from Butchart Gardens in Canada. We had a Jacob Butchart here in 1870 who was kin to the Canadian Butchart family. They were all originally from Scotland.

The Historical Family has rallied - Australian historical societies are being very supportive. Family history groups have also become involved as have Museums Australia and the Melbourne Museum. The Public Records Office of Victoria and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria are sending volunteers to assist in the collating of new material.

Until this all comes together, we are not in a position to make decisions about size, position of site etc. The Society is an incorporated body and as such needs to maintain its autonomy.

We are here to preserve the Past, record the Present and take us into the Future.

Support our Dream - which is to have a beautiful Museum complex with Theatrette. This would be surrounded by Butchart Style gardens which would make Marysville and district a gardening Mecca.

The book, The Highway to Heaven is now in the rare book library at Monash and in the State Library of Ireland in Dublin and copies have been sent to all the groups who supported us.

Soft cover books are available at the L.H.C. and at Marysville Central for $25.

The limited edition of hard cover books will soon be available at $50 each. (These will be numbered). Orders can be taken - call 9874 4085 or 0417 596 433.

The sequel, Razed/Raised is under way. The Razed part of the story id straight forward, Raised is still ongoing.

Marysville Community Website contains a section providing information about the historical society and how support can be given, especially in replacing images of Maryville lost in the fire, plus contact information.

Issue 10 of History Victoria e-news contained an article about the challenge of rebuilding a collection.

In May Joan Hunt placed a message on the History Victoria Support Group forum notifying members that Mary and Reg Kenealy had notified her that they were able to start accepting donations of any kind, including working bee helpers. They have a six months lease on the cottage next to Crossways Guest House in Marysville, and from 13 June will be there every Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Workers to help with sorting donations of items to the collection, scanning images on loan, and reformatting CDs will be appreciated. People able to assist should contact Mary on her mobile at 0417 596 433 or her land-line on 9874 4085 to let her know they are coming to help. Donations can be posted to Mary Kenealy, Secretary, Marysville Historical Society, Unit 2, 11 McCleres Road, Vermont, 3133 and will be gratefully received. Thanks to everyone for their support.
