Violet Town Honour Rolls & Memorial

Image The Boer War Memorial
When the news of Private Williams’ death reached Violet Town, Mr H. Linard, J.P., at once initiated a movement for the erection of a monument in the town by public subscription, and so well was this appeal responded to that he was very soon able to place in the bank, as the nucleus of a fund, the sum of £50. It was unveiled on July 3rd 1901 in front of a large crowd, estimated to be 1000 in number. ORIGINALLY it was in the centre of the road, directly behind where it is now, which is on the lawn of the Community Centre. The light was removed many years ago, but in more recent years a family (unknown to me at the moment) has restored this original feature which is a great credit to them.
Charles was the son of Henry (who had predeceased him) & Frances Williams. He was amongst the first Victorians to be killed,on February 12th 1900 at the age of 21.

Although a very poor photo, you can at least see the size and what the WW1 board looks like.
World War 2 Honour Roll
Another poor photo but at least we can get to see what the WW2 board looks like. Honour Boards are one of the more difficult objects to photograph.

The RSL have a new display, with one very special centrepiece, the restored memorial photo of Charles Williams that was presented to his mother from his troop. Many many thanks to Barry Thomas, editor of Caps & Flints, a complete stranger and looking for something else really, for many many hours of work in anticipation of a grant to have the special photo restored. Unfortunately it was not successful, but the project went ahead, and at the time of writing, was paid for privately.

These names are on brass plaques on what was the Violet Town Memorial Hall (now Community Centre), they are believed to be World War 1 service people. They were attached to the wall in the 1990's. I am not sure where they were previously.

If you can make any corrections or additions, such as christian names etc., it would be most appreciated, if you could please email them to me. Please double check your email address as there is no way of contacting you if it is wrong. Any questions - There is actually a human being on the other end so a PLEASE & THANK YOU are still most acceptable words and highly desirable in this day and age!
