Stolen from within a display at the museum, this piece of everyone's heritage has now gone into someone's locked cupboard so only he has the pleasure to look at it. H.W. Potts, Dentist Euroa, a rare rectangular Cherry toothpaste lid.

| Euroa is half way between Melbourne & Albury on the Hume Freeway, sitting at the foot of the beautiful Strathbogie Ranges. The population is about 2800 and it is in the Shire of Strathbogie.
Euroa (U - row - a) was surveyed in 1849, but it wasn't until 1853 until it was noticeably settled. The DeBoos family were amongst the first and we are so lucky that Charles Lane DeBoos, who was 3 years old at the time of arrival here, wrote down the beginings of our township. He has left an excellent insight into how things once were. Anyway, this is a page of links to pages I have already setup, so you can learn a little about the town. SOME MILESTONES in EUROA'S HISTORY 1824 - Hume & Hovell journeyed through the district. 1837 - Hunter Brothers overlanded horses and cattle from Sydney, making their headquaters Mansfield, with Euroa area an out-station. 1838 - The Templeton family arrive and settle at Seven Creeks Station. 1846 - Strathbogie was first settled. 1851 - The Forlonge family take over Seven Creeks Station. 1854 - The first police officers were stationed at Euroa. Living in tents by the creek. 1856 - First line of four horse coaches serve Euroa. 1857 - First burial in Euroa Cemetery. 1861 - The passing of a new law unlocking the lands and making them available for settlement. Euroa United Town and Farmers Common proclaimed. (In 1869 there were 766 cattle, 302 horses and 86 goats on the Common). 1863 - Toll house and gates erected on the northern end of the bridge over the Seven Creeks. 1867 - Roman Catholics built the first church. 1870 - Severe floods, water six feet deep in Seven Creeks Hotel. 1873 - Township commenced to extend east over the creek, in Railway and Kirkland Streets at the time of the construction of the railway line. 1876 - Farmers' Arms Hotel first traded, with John Shelswell as licensee. 1878 - Ned Kelly and his Gang robbed the National Bank in broad daylight. 1879 - Shire of Euroa proclaimed. 1884 - The Euroa Advertiser first published. Detachment of Victorian Mounted Rifles formed. 1894 - Euroa and District Football Associations'initial season. 1897 - The Euroa Gazette first published. 1904 - Euroa and District Cricket Association formed. 1908 - Euroa Golf Club formed. 1910 - First motor car arrived in Euroa. 1914-18 - World War One. Six hundred enlisted from the area, one hundred and twenty five did not come home. 1916 - Severe flooding. 1928 - Sydney Road to be known as the Hume Highway. Branch of Country Womens Association formed. 1929 - Opening of the Euroa Bush Nursing Hospital. 1934 - Jubilee of Euroa A. & P. Society. Dedication of Memorial Oak trees (adjacent to the State School), to honour three local Victoria Cross recipients - Lieutant Colonel Leslie C. Maygar, Major Fred H. Tubb, Corporal Alex Burton. 1940 - Opening of Mrs I.R. Currie's Seven Creeks Park Lodge for the caretaker of the park. Faithful's Creek Station homestead destroyed by a devasting bushfire that started at Tamleugh. 1941 - Opening and naming of the bridge over the Seven Creeks, Burton's Bridge. (In honour of Alex Burton V.C.). 1949 - Opening of the Municipal saleyards. 1960 - Brian Vear first Euroaite to make Olympic Team Selection. 1961 - Euroa High School officially opened. 1965 - Black Sunday - seven lives from one family lost in the Longwood bushfire. 1971 - Euroa Olympic pool opened. 1974 - Planning for the Seven Creeks Run begin. 1977 - Frail and Aged Hostel 'Euroaville' established. Also the Ian Rollo Currie Estate cottages in course of construction in Weir Street. These milestones were first compiled by Cliff Halsall & Jack McLean. c1980. |
