Balmattum CELLAR a John Sullivan of Euroa photo
Along with Fermoy (above) this stone cellar at Balmattum would be among the districts oldest buildings still standing (and at the time of this photo, in near original condition, excepting for the iron roof.) Unfortunatley and very sadly, a truck ran into the cellar about 2001 and demolished half of it! After about 5 or so year fight with an insurance company the money has come through and it is to be rebuilt. Luckily we have in this area, two or three great stone masons who we know will do a fantastic job.

| There are over 25 sites listed on our TRAIL around the town, but there are still more in
the town and the district that are not listed unfortunately. The oldest known building in the town is 'FERMOY', built in 1857-58 by Maurice Garrett and used as a hotel by him for over 50 years, with him as licensee for this whole period. It was de-licensed in 1912 as there were too many hotels in the area for the population. The building was then remodelled slightly and used as a private residence by the Garrett family until 17th March 2001, when it was sold outside the family. Maurice Garrett died in 1913. Other buildings of interest are the four other hotels, with three out of the five in use today as hotels. Post Office - Colonial Bank - 3rd National Bank - Butter Factory - Birchill Cottage - State School -1st Public Hall - 'Blairgowrie' - Flour Mill - Court House - 'Vega'- 'Plym' - Railway Station - 1st Presbyterian Manse just to name a few for now. |
