An International Disability Rights Convention - Australian Community Education and Networking Project.

People with Disabilities in Australia have the same human rights as all other people. An International Disability Rights Convention is currently being developed by the United Nations to ensure that human rights of people with disabilities are not abused. This convention is a way of ensuring that those who are most likely to have their human rights abused and neglected are covered specifically in International Human Rights Treaties.

People with disabilities from all over the world are having input into what is in the proposed convention, through the non-government organisations that are assisting in the conventions development.

You can have input.

Why we need it & how you can be involved!!!

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and the project that we are undertaking for Disability Australia Ltd that will assist people with disabilities to learn about, and become involved in the developing United Nations Convention on the Rights and Dignity of People with Disabilities. Our names are Martin Leckey and David Brant.

Many people are unaware that an International Convention on the Rights and Dignity of People with Disabilities is currently being developed by the United Nations and that Australia has representatives who go to meetings to discuss what will be in this International Convention.

What is an International Convention and do you know how it could protect the rights and dignity of people with disabilities? Do people with disabilities know how they can have a say in what is in the Convention?

The aim of this project is to answer these questions in a forum for people with disabilities that will be in many regions in Victoria.

This project is important for people with disabilities in raising awareness of the rights they have, and in supporting the rights of people with disabilities in other countries. All people with disabilities should know that they have rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, although that is not always the case. As a marginalised, disadvantaged and particularly vulnerable group it is necessary that an International Convention on Disability Rights is developed to emphasise the human rights of people with disabilities. This project and the forum which will be conducted is one way that people with disabilities in the Australian community can be involved in contributing their ideas, and find out how to continue to be involved if they wish.

We will be posting regular updates to all sites. We hope to see or hear from you through one of these sites.

There is also a discussion group which gives you the opportunity for forum and email discussions on this topic. To join this group, visit the group web page
