Powerdown Australia
Powerdown Australia is a group dedicated to helping Australia survive the end of the carbon age. The age of cheap oil is over and the low energy age is starting. Powerdown is the only sane response to the world's increasingly grave problems of energy depletion, environmental degradation, and over-population.
Discussion with the founder members, and posting on Running on Empty – Oz has highlighted that it is very easy to get a reputation as a crank on Peak Oil - many people simply do not want to listen. As well, whatever our private feelings of doom and gloom (and I sometime feel like a child in the world of Doom 3) we must offer a positive message of hope - we can't just say you, and your children will all die; tell them the good news - they may not have to pay off their mortgages. The Yahoo Groups and other web sites cannot agree on a vision of the future; more accurately they have several. The only scenario we all agree on that the "Business as usual" is NOT one of the possibilities and that the longer people think that it is, the worse the discontinuity will be and the poorer the chance of a soft(ish) landing.
We need more knowledge and research as 90% of all work on sustainable energy has been based on false assumptions. Certainly 90% of books on economics and the environment are written as though the oil and carbon ages will last forever. However newspaper articles (even in the Australian) are becoming increasingly concerned.
This group is dedicated to doing something, not just talking about it!
“If we could first know where we are and wither we are tending, we could better judge what to do and how to do it.” Abraham Lincoln.
"For knowing afar off the evils that are brewing, they are easily cured. But when they are allowed to grow until every one can recognise them, there is no longer any remedy to be found.” Machiavelli.
