Grant Diffy of ComputerBank setting up the network

With ComputerBank located in Melbourne, we needed to develop a local support group and the original King Valley Linux Users Group was formed. The objectives were:

  • To keep the machines sponsored by ComputerBank Victoria operating.
  • To recycle obsolete computers into the local community.
  • To provide a learning environment to better understand the Linux
Operating System and Open Source Software.

Volunteers began meeting in March, 2002. Every Friday night, we have our regulars who learn from each other and play with the many different flavours of Linux. We also get general community members dropping in with their computer under their arm looking for guidance in one form or another. On Wednesdays, we get together in our workshop to rework obsolete computers to give back to the community. Our vision has expanded to putting Open Source Dos systems on 80286 and 80386 machines.

We have grown and become better known as the North East Computerbank and are now invited to present at the regional Computer Swap Meets.

  • Don't Send that obsolete computer stuff to the Tip

Bring it to our Computer Recycling Workshop and we will salvage it to make a computer for someone who doesn't have one.
