| I entered the Navy the day before my sixteenth birthday in 1962 and boarded the train west to Perth and the junior recruit training establishment at HMAS Leeuwin in Fremantle, Western Australia.
At HMAS Leeuwin we embarked on a schooling program which while academic based included naval lore, seamanship training and naval indoctrination. It also involved considerable sport and activities such as overnight expeditions and trips to Rottnest Island. During the time there I was honoured to be part of the Royal Guard for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth for her visit to the Commonwealth Games. During preparation for the Commonwealth Games we were used to build some of the venues, such as construction of grandstands and the like. During the games we were used as ushers and the like at venues and consequently got to be part of and see some of the games. We only received day leave, and after some time providing we had a local family to sponser us we would get overnight leave, the other option was to go over the fence. At Christmas we had leave and travel home, and then again at the end of our 12 month stay there. At this time we were catergorised according to our school results and the navies needs. I had my mind set on engineering, the navys was on radio operator for me, my persistance finally winning through. After our leave on leaving HMAS Leeuwin I was posted to HMAS Cerberus, Westernport, Victoria. |
