Roman Catholic Mission Garden Point 1944 - 1951

Letter dated June 1951 about Maintenance of Halfcaste Children
of Major Sullivan

Sullivan is the father of six children, four of whom are inmates
of the Garden Point Mission. Mae and Rita were admitted in April 1945
and Matthew and Donna in March 1951. These dates are only approximate.

Sullivan is willing to pay maintenance for the above four children.

Sullivan is maintaining two children, in addition to the four in the
Mission, and a wife.

Letter dated 20. 2.1951 about Clare Mollomini

She was left off the list for December 1950 by an oversight. She
returned from Channel Island on 12. 2.1949.

Memo circa 1946 with handwritten date 26. 8.1946

When the three children Monica, Agnes and Billy came to us from
Tipperary we gave them the surname BROCK and were afterwards
told their name was CROSBY. However we have since discovered that
ARCHIE CROSBY is no relation to the children and has no claim on
them, consequently they will be listed under the former surname
of BROCK in future.

The girl Maureen NAMBI was baptised with the surname ABBOTT and in
future will be listed as Maureen ABBOTT.

Letter dated 25th June 1945

(1) Maria Hugel, Gabriella, Irene and Andrew are missing on the May list.

(2) It is assumed that Lucas is the child who died at Melville Island
some time ago.

Letter 6. 7.1945 from Catholic Mission, Melville Island to Native Affairs
Branch Alice Springs.

Dear Sir

By same mail under separate cover I am forwarding
some of the Histories of the Half-castes within our
care. I have not sufficient copies for the remainder, as
we have ninety-four children here now, so will continue
when I receive a further supply of papers.

The birthdays of the children are usually not
known so we give to each a date when they come to us,
these I have shown on the history. In some cases the
date was given to us but in the majority of cases we
kney only the year of birth. The children look forward
to having a little treat on each birthday so I find it
better to give them a fixed date.

With regard to surnames - some children have
them when they come, others do not and these seem to
question the fact as they get older, therefore we have
commenced to give them all a surname; in the case of some
of the children born of black mothers on M.I. we have
given some native name connected with the mother or
tribe, etc. The three little children from Brock's
Creek, we called Brock; the two little babies from Alice
Springs, Felicity Freeman and Perpetua Parnell. If I
give the remainder of the children names which I intend
to do in future I will put the children on the monthly
list under their NEW SURNAMES in alphabetical order, so
I trust this will not be confusing for your office. The
Christian name will of course remain the same for I have
notified you of any change in this respect, putting the
name we call them now as a second name in most cases.

..... Watson (Billy), Henry Hunter and Stanislaus
...... came from Bathurst Island Mission on 30th
June. I will send in their history when I receive
more papers.

Mick Heenan went to Darwin Hospital to have his tonsils
removed on 22nd June and has not yet returned.

Urban went to Darwin Hospital with Cellulitis on 15th
June and has not yet returned but is making good progress.

Maureen Nambi went to Darwin Hospital on 2nd July
with swelling in glands and has not yet returned and
we have not heard as yet how she is progressing.

I forgot to mention last time that Maria Hugul and
Andrew are no longer at our Mission. Maria is married
to a black at Snake Bay and her son Andrew is with her.
She is a full blooded aboriginal and so is her son.
This information has been sent before to the Native
Affairs.

Thanking you
Yours sincerely
S M Annunciata
Sister in Charge

Letter dated 2. 4.1944 from W E Harney to the
Director of Native Affairs.

On the 14th March and again on the 22nd March I visited
(with Lieut. Morris) the Garden Point Mission and while there I
told Father Connors the reason I was visiting the Mission.

He was definitely hostile to both myself and later Lieut.
F Morris.

In the presence of both Lieut. F Morris and myself he
made some very strong remarks against the Branch - asuc as 'Bull-
shit', ' a lot of yellow curs', 'lost face', 'Americans have given
natives assistance and government nothing'.

I explained to him the work performed by Mr J B Gribble
til September when he entered the Navy and then carried on, also
how Mr J Murray remained at Delissaville on patrols. To all
this he only smiled and mentioned 'Bull-shit' etc.

Resenting this attitude I left the place and went down to the
boat 'Toorbul' and never returned.

The halfcaste children here look well, but have had no schooling
since the sisters left before the bombing of Darwin. They
sleep in beds which had blankets and their dormitary was under
one of the large houses there, their food was well cooked by Mrs
Liddy and served on tables with plates etc.

I was certainly shocked to see these children scrambling for
water melon rinds and heard the strong remarks that were made
afterwards by the visiting people (Americans and Australian Navy)
who were there, but I think they accepted our explanation that we
were unaware of this set-up.

Mrs Liddy asked me to see about a holiday for her, as
although she liked the place, yet somehow she was 'out of it
all' and needed a little rest.

REMARKS

I consider Father Connor's remarks were unjust, this
Branch has visited his place in the past, and now and then sent
him tobacco for his natives.

This anti-native affairs and anti-administration feeling
at times is indeed unjust, at all times we have helped, even
loaded foodstuffs into mission boats and assisted their natives.

In the past people have acted against our control by
'holding women in town' as Brother Quinn did with Bul-Bil
and Nancy. Everywhere the officers of this branch have met this
attitude as witness Brig. Dollery's remarks to Mr White and
myself - 'What has the Administration and Native Affairs
done for the natives since 19th February, 1942'?

These remarks and Father Connor's attitude is the direct
result of this 'anti' attitude in the past.

I ask that these half-caste children be given schooling
that they will in future be educated enough to enable them
to marry the convent educated girls who were sent down South.

I will also visit this place again the the near furure.

W E Harney
Patrol Officer
Native Affairs Branch
