SEARCHING FOR LIVING MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY
Many public-access resources involving living people are readily available to the general public. A wealth of information about living members of any family is FREELY AVAILABLE to the general public in ALREADY-PUBLISHED material found in LIBRARIES in many formats and also on the INTERNET [I], such as the World War Two Nominal Roll [W] on the internet which states the date-of-birth for each person.
Not all of these available resources are on the internet, including electoral rolls [E], newspapers, telephone directories [T], university graduate and staff lists, the Medical Directory of Australia [MDA] and more.
The reader is also advised to search the internet for information on individual living members of the family.
It is regarded as ethical to REPUBLISH in any format information already published about living people. It is considered unnecessary to first obtain a person’s personal, specific permission to republish any material which has been published previously and is freely available to the public, (personal letter to the author from the President of the Genealogical Society of Victoria in response to an enquiry about an article published by the Society on ethics in family history, “Ancestor”, September 2010).
In reply to specific questions and comments this information includes such data as names of living people with the year of marriage from an index on the internet [NM], or dates of birth or marriage from newspapers and from microfiche in libraries, or names of living relatives from a death notice inserted by the family in a newspaper, or the URL of a person’s website or other internet references which may be obtained through a search engine. As a matter of etiquette, however, the author has often refrained from publishing such permissibly ethical information. Instead, clues have been given (with much repetition) as to how the readers can access the information for themselves.
Information about living people which has already been published may be RE-PUBLISHED in other formats. The AGCI Index (Australian Genealogical Computer Index published on CD by SAG, the Society of Australian Genealogists) [AI], is a PRIME EXAMPLE of this republishing of information on living people, as is the TROVE internet site maintained by the National Library of Australia[SMHDI-I]. Many BIRTH NOTICES of people born to 1954 are available on the Trove site of the National Library of Australia.
The author has personal experience of personal data published on both these sites for you all to find.
Accessible information on living members of the family is especially found included in the information given in BIRTH, DEATH AND FUNERAL NOTICES in NEWSPAPERS: information which has been provided by the family members themselves. Other records involving living people are also found PUBLISHED in newspapers. Newspapers are also available on microfilm and on the internet. Newspapers published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, are especially helpful in finding considerable amounts of information about living people. The author shall refrain from a more detailed explanation as to why and how, but shall leave it to the readers to work out for themselves.
**PAGE iii**
ELECTORAL ROLLS are PUBLISHED public documents. Adult family members still living at home are easily identified in these rolls. The rolls may be searched and used in many ways to extract information about living members of any family. The rolls are available on microfiche in major libraries.
CURRENT ELECTORAL ROLLS are available to the general public on computer at ALL ELECTORAL OFFICES across Australia. These are up-dated daily.
The ANCESTRY [A] website has ELECTORAL ROLLS providing useful information about living people: Ancestry.com.
TELEPHONE BOOKS are also PUBLISHED public documents which contain useful details about members of a family. Some copies are available on microfiche. Current phone books are on the INTERNET.
BIRTH INDEXES, to 1918 in New South Wales [Federation Index-FI] and to 1920 in Victoria, were PUBLISHED in various formats many years ago. More recently the purchase of certificates has been limited to a minimum of more than 100 years ago.
MARRIAGE INDEXES for New South Wales are currently published on the internet to 1959 and are extended by one year at the start of each year. Many of the people named are still living but may be mentioned by name elsewhere. Other lists of dates of marriage, or of engagement to be married, and the names of the people involved are also available, including the AGCI Index and English BDM records.
NEWSPAPERS contain huge amounts of information about living people in sections people usually fail to consider as sources of information-I shall leave the thinking to the general public.
GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES may be advertised or be noted with an article in a newspaper or similar publication about the celebration of the event.
MILITARY RECORDS released and PUBLISHED by the Commonwealth Government of Australia contain useful information, including dates-of-birth (optional for those who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars).
EXAMINATION RESULTS were published in the Sydney Morning Herald in New South Wales. These results are available on the TROVE website until 1954 and on microfilm for succeeding years. These results provide much useful information about an individual person.
BIOGRAPHIES and many sites found on the INTERNET are also excellent sources from which to obtain information on living people. The URLs for these sites and the following three categories of internet sites are published, if found, as the people are aware of these sites and usually provide the information to go onto the internet.
GOOGLE SCHOLAR lists the research publications of family members.
PROFESSIONAL and TRADE JOURNALS, BUSINESS STAFF LISTS and DIRECTORIES or similar for many occupations provide business and private addresses. These journals are frequently available to the public in libraries as well.
UNIVERSITY CALENDARS AND ALUMNI LISTS provide some personal information. Some alumni lists are on the internet, including that of the University of New England and partially for the University of Sydney. Frequently such calendars may also be found in larger libraries.
Much more information about this or any other family is freely available to the general public in larger libraries such as State libraries and family history libraries.

SEARCHING FOR ALL MEMBERS OF A FAMILY
On a computer much public information about this or any other family line may be obtained quite quickly, including information about the early generations of the family. Some sources are reasonably obvious and so are not recorded repeatedly. Less obvious sources are indicated as [I] in the text.
Some information on Ancestry.com [A] is free on the internet, including truncated versions of the Australian electoral rolls (including living members of the family). Most Ancestry records on the internet are available for a fee. However many larger libraries provide free access to the full Ancestry site.
The URLs for many internet references are on the sites: “REFERENCES A for the BENNETT, ASPINALL, CROUCHER, POLLARD and ASSOCIATED FAMILIES” and “REFERENCES B for the BENNETT, ASPINALL, CROUCHER, POLLARD and ASSOCIATED FAMILIES”.
The SYDNEY MORNING HERALD [SMH] may be found on the TROVE site of the nla (National Library of Australia) [SMHDI-I] to 1954. Information in the SMH about living members of the family may be found on this site. Trove also provides access to many other sources of information useful for finding other members of the family, including members of the family who are still alive.
The RYERSON INDEX [RI] is useful for finding references to the death and funeral notices in the SMH and in other newspapers. These notices, in turn, provide important information on other members of a family, especially on those members of the family who are still alive. The information found in these notices may then be followed up in telephone books and on electoral rolls, especially, and from other sources of published data. This is also a useful source for finding the deaths of spouses.
NOTE: I have found a number of family notices missing from the index even though I have located the notices in the newspapers on microfilm.
As well as the sources above, information useful for sorting out the various family branches may be found in the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages Indexes on the internet or on CD or microfiche (especially BIRTHS to 1918 on the microfiche and on CD, released in the mid 1990s), divorce records, Probate Indexes [PB], Cemetery Records, Telephone Books [T], Electoral Rolls (especially for extending branches to living family members) [E], and the AGCI Index (Australasian Genealogical Computer Index) [AI] which also contains useful information on living members of the family. The World War Two Nominal Roll [W] contains dates-of-birth for all people listed, even for those who are alive. There are also available lists for the Korean War and for the Vietnam War in which some dates of birth of living people are also provided.
EXPLANATION OF OTHER SYMBOLS USED IN THE TEXT
Self-evident abbreviations also used at times include BC (birth certificate), MC (marriage certificate) and DC (death certificate). Usually, the certificates of all births, deaths and marriages listed on the internet may be purchased by the general public.
Other abbreviations include: [FI] (NSW Federation Index of births, deaths and marriages to 1918); [I] Internet; [NI] (New South Wales BDM Index found on the Internet, with [NB], [ND] and [NM] as sub-set abbreviations) and [RI] Ryerson Index.
Other abbreviations [IGI] (International Genealogical Index-available on the internet under the free site, FamilySearch [FS], which also has other useful records) and [W] (WW2 Nominal Roll, which contains the date-of-birth for most personnel, although some dates are incorrect as men (mostly) altered the year of their birth).
Also of assistance in tracing a family are the AGCI Index [AI], divorce records, (look for multiple marriages of several descendants), electoral rolls on microfiche [E], post office directories [P], probate records [PB], the Indexes for Rookwood Cemetery [RKI], and other cemeteries (on CD, Internet and microfiche), and newspapers, especially the death and funeral notices, but also legal (divorce, especially) and Probate notices.

The members of the family who have made a personal contribution to this family history. To each of these people I give my grateful thanks.
Unless a full address is given in this family history a suburb refers to the registration district shown on published BDM records or other similar records. For example, “Redfern” may also cover Waterloo, North Botany, Mascot and other nearby suburbs.
All places and suburbs mentioned are in New South Wales unless the text indicates otherwise.
The generations are numbered. Children who did not marry or about whom only a little is known are included at the end of their parents’ entry.
A * before a person’s name indicates that more information about that person may be found in a later part of the text. Unless a different page number is also provided the relevant information about that person may be found soon after the first mention of that person’s name. When the information about the person is found on a higher-numbered page a page number for the earlier reference to that person is shown beside the person’s name.

FOREWORD
This family history begins with a convict clock-maker from rural England who eventually became a wealthy farmer owning a vast track of land in what is now inner south-west Sydney. Many of his descendants, or their marriage partners, were also associated with the land. Some members of the Oatley family became farmers and pastoralists, or the wives of such men. Other men, together with their wives and families, were associated with rural communities in their various capacities. They had occupations linked to the needs of those who farmed the land and of those living in rural townships. Some of these branches have eventually become more urbanised over successive generations.
By contrast, some of the family branches emanating from this rural stock have remained very urban, some even living in the environs of central Sydney.
This family history also starts and ends with sadness. In the beginning a desperate middle-aged man, is convicted of a crime and is senteced to life imprisonment. Eventually he was sent to Australia for the rest of his life. At the end an old man dies alone, deserted by his family, most of whom I cannot find, some of whom are now known to have moved to the United States of America to live. His wife and children are so unknown to other members of the family they are not even mentioned on his death certificate. Between these events the poor became wealthy, even famous, while lives were lost and medals for gallantry were won in two world wars. These two family groups left an indelible mark on the history of Sydney and Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia.
My interest in these two families began when a relative married a descendant of James Oatley and George Hewit. This relative, not much older than me, had lived nearby and had taken me to school when I first started school. Even after her marriage, quite a few years earlier than mine, she still lived quite close to my family and so we knew one another well. Eventually I married and moved interstate. During visits back to my family home in Brighton-le-Sands I kept up my acquaintance with her family. Many years later she asked me to investigate more of the history of her husband’s families: I was nearly ready to publish a history of one of my own families at the time.
I found her husband’s families most fascinating. Soon my interest had extended well beyond her requirements: I was a retired teacher and academic with a unit of Australian History in my primary (science) degree and a penchant for doing research.
Furthermore, I and my extended family had lived in the St George area of Sydney and so we were very familiar with the suburbs of Oatley, Kinsgrove Beverly Hills and Moorefields and with other districts of interest. As well as the extensive bush reserve in Oatley, which we had visited, relatives on my father’s side had lived in the Hurstville/Oatley area and in the St George district as a whole.
I have now written over ten family histories of varying lenghths and depths. Each family is has its own unique genre and structure, with internal sub-groups. While searching for information on a family it is usual to consult newspapers, particularly the Personal or Family Notices. These columns of birth, death and funeral notices, amongst others of interest, can be especially helpful. For the Oatley family I found a conspicuous paucity of such notices or of the information they contained if they were present. I had strong feeling of sadness for this famous family and its need for such intense privacy. Amongst the other family histories I have also compiled one included a number of very well-known people. But no other family which I have followed has felt such a deep need for anonimity as the Oatley family. Also, this feeling of sadness was reinforced when I found many more divorces in the Oatley family as compared with the numbers of divorces found in the other family histories which I have compiled.
This is no more than a brief outline of the two families. The information has been collated from newspapers, documents and data bases held in public libraries and by the purchase of many birth, marriage and death certificates. Many more certificates could be purchased to extend what is known of these families.
Ultimately I had sufficient data to make known my interest in the families on the Internet. The response has been very encouraging. A number of people have contacted me. Each person has expanded their own particular branch of the family to make the family tree more complete. To each of these family members I give my special thanks for their individual contribution.

DIVISION ONE: JAMES OATLEY, CONVICT, AND HIS DESCENDANTS
CHAPTER ONE: CONVICT ORIGINS
G1 JAMES OATLEY, SENIOR, watch and clock maker, convict
BIRTH AND DEATH
James was born about 1769/70 in Stafford, England, according to various records such as his trial and burial records. The record of James’ conditional pardon says “Native of Warwickshire”. No official documents relating to his birth or baptism have been found. His parents are unknown.
James died 8 OCT, 1839, aged 70 years. Appended to his death record is a note to say that this was about 15 miles from Sydney, near Punchbowl. Punchbowl is actually a few kilometres west of the northern boundary of the property. The Sydney Monitor, 11 OCT 1839, has a death notice for James saying “Oatley Mr, late of George Street, died 9 OCT 1839 at Cooks River, aged 72 years.”. He was buried in his own vault on his property, Snugsborough, (Presbyterian Burials in the Parish of St Andrew, Sydney). This property was the 175 acre land grant of 1831. In the 1920s the missing vault was found in an obscure section of the Meadows Estate, Canary Hill, Dumbleton (now Beverly Hills). Over the vault was a large flat stone bearing an inscription. A plaque bearing the inscription is now attached to a memorial stone in a park on Ponyara Road near the Beverly Hills railway station (see Internet for details). Nearby were the foundations of what had been a large house constructed of hand-made bricks made by the convicts (Propeller, Hurstville, 1 APR, 1937).
**PAGE 2**
MARRIAGE
James’ married life is quite complex and confusing: different writers give differing accounts of his partners. These accounts are usually unaccompanied by any references or other sources of information, which makes it difficult to check and verify them-something very unacceptable to the serious family historian This lack of references means that I have been unable to corroborate these various accounts from readily available or other reference material, although I have some certificates. Birth and marriage records are more readily available than death records. Whether some wives died or whether James and they simply split up, is difficult to ascertain after such a long period of time and without the appropriate references. Personally, to me, some accounts appear to be speculative given the paucity of readily available records of the period involved (the late 1770s to the 1840s). Also, information omitted from these differing accounts is almost as relevant as what is provided in confirming the veracity of the data they contain. The will of James contains useful information about his marital affairs and family life. A copy of the will is available at the Society of Australian Genealogists, Sydney.
James had two known partners. It is uncertain whether he was actually married to one of them, although information from his will, discussed later [p3], suggests that it was, indeed, an unlicensed relationship of convenience. There were many such relationships amongst the convicts. It was necessary for the convicts to seek permission to marry, so many of them avoided the risk of refusal by simply co-habiting with their chosen partner. The authorities accepted these unofficial partnerships, electing to ignore them for the sake of peace. Some authors also claim a third marriage, but give no source or reference for their claims.
James is said to have married in England Sarah Bennett either on 27 OCT 1802 (Kogarah Council-Internet, and others) or on 21 March 1806 (Christopher Betcher, Marist College Penshurst-Internet). No reference or place of marriage is mentioned in either article. A place of marriage would be expected if this information were taken from church records. (N.B: My own research does not corroborate everything stated in the article on the Kogarah Council website.) If this marriage to Sarah did occur it appears to have been short-lived, either due to the death of Sarah (possibly in child birth or due to illness) or because she and James simply split up and then went their own separate ways.
Certainly the International Genealogical Index (IGI) does record a marriage of a James Oatley to a Sarah Bennett in Birmingham on 27 October 1802. But to which James Oatley was she married? The IGI also records the marriage of a James Oatley to an Ann Berrey on 25 September 1806 in London. The marriage referred to by Christopher Betcher in his article does not appear on the IGI. The source of his date and information is unknown. Three marriages of a James Oatley are recorded on the IGI for the period 1790 to 1810.
Also, on the IGI, for the period 1765 to 1788, the births of ten boys named James Oatley, or similar, are recorded. Any one of these ten boys, or others named James Oatley but not recorded on the IGI, could have married Sarah Bennett or Ann Berrey.
A cardinal rule of family history research is to work from the known to the unknown The information about a marriage or similar event must come initially from the records of the known person. It is not permitted to simply look up a list to find an event and then assume that it is the wanted event. Information concerning an early marriage of James Oatly must initiate from his records and not from an external source. I have found no such source of information about an early marriage of James Oatley .The information must then be verified in some way. There are many mistakes in known records.
**PAGE 3**
MARRIED LIFE IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Later, James “married” MARY STOKES, [c1783, Birmingham-1838], who bore him three children, James, Frederick and George. Records suggest that this was not a formal, licensed marriage (further details below). It is unknown for certain whether James knew Mary in England, but some authors suggest that he did. Certainly, Mary travelled to Australia as a free settler soon after James left England for Australia. She began to co-habit with James soon after her arrival and took his family name, as did the son she bore during the voyage, even though James was not his biological father. On the 1823/4/5 muster Mary is recorded as being James’ housekeeper even though she has his family name. In the 1828 census Mary is recorded as James’ wife.
James’ will indicates that his “marriage” to Mary Stokes/Oatley was an informal arrangement. To conform to the legal requirements of that era both of his sons are named in the will as James Stokes and Frederick Stokes and are described individually as “my adopted son….”, with the rider “otherwise commonly and usually called…. Oatley”. This terminology reveals that they bore their mother’s surname and that it had been necessary for them to be formally adopted by James, even though he was their biological father. It was a necessary legal requirement of a will in 1839 to document such information. Formal adoption of his children by James would have been unnecessary if he were married to Mary Stokes. By contrast, James’ sons were baptised with their father’s surname which they always used. There is also another reference to Frederick Stokes Oatley in the 1860s and available at the SAG (Society of Australian Genealogists, in Sydney). Mary brought her son, Robert to the “marriage’. He was also adopted by James and used the family name Oatley. However, in James’ will Robert was not afforded the status of “my adopted son”. Rather, Robert was termed “an adopted child” and was only a minor recipient of James’ vast estate.
Eventually, after many years together, Mary and James split up. Each remarried. Since they were not actually married to one another no divorce was required either. The “widowed” James married a widow, MARY ANN BOGG (nee Cowell/Cowle) on 16 SEP 1833 in St Phillip’s Church (Church records). This marriage was also short-lived. In his will James left some of his estate to Mary. Subsequently he added a codicil to the will to revoke this part of his will due to Mary’s adultery. Several years after James’ death Mary Anne remarried.
James’ will also states that Mary Stokes posed as a widow, “Mrs Mary Johnstone”, and married Charles Howell in 1832. Mary died in 1838 aged 55 years.
No exact details of James’ parents, birth or baptism and marriages to Sarah or to Mary have been found by me to date. Early records are difficult to locate. Many early records for both England and Australia, such as church and cemetery records, are no longer in existence, having deteriorated or been lost or destroyed.. The absence of such records leaves gaps in the information available.
**PAGE 4**
CRIME
James was sentenced to transportation for life at the Southampton Assizes on 7 March 1814. His age is given as 44 years. Details of the crime for which James was transported have not been found by me. Various other internet sites name the misdemenour as stealing bedding or as stealing two feather beds. None of these sites give a reference for the source of their information about James’ offense. James arrived in Sydney, Australia, aboard the Marquis of Wellington on 27 JAN 1815. On 25 OCT 1821 James was granted a conditional pardon because of his contribution to the Colony. In this document James is described as “5’51/2”, pale, dark brown hair, grey eyes, stout .....”(the remainder is difficult to read). Mary, and their son, Robert, born at sea, landed in Sydney on the 8 JUN, 1815, having travelled from England on board the Northampton. It would appear that James had been given conjugal rights as a prisoner back in England, unless this son was not actually fathered by James.
James was a watchmaker and clockmaker by trade. Soon after his arrival in Sydney he built the clock for the newly constructed Hyde Park barracks designed by Francis Greenway. The building and clock still stand on the east side of Macquarie Street near an entrance to St James Railway Station. James’ clock-making business was located in George Street, Sydney opposite where the Town Hall now stands. (In 1844/5 the address of the business was recorded as being located at 332 George Street, Sydney-internet). James was reknown for his long clocks, also known as grandfather clocks. At least one of these clocks is still owned by a descendant of James. Other notes on James’ clocks may be found on the internet. The clocks made by James were seemingly very popular for he became a wealthy man eventually.
By 1828 James was nearing 60 years of age. His eyesight would have begun to fail and his hands would have lost some of the fine co-ordination required for certain aspects of his craft. Furthermore, nineteen-year-old Frederick would have become quite adept at the trade by now and so would be assuming much of the finer work which had been done previously by James. James began to think about his future. Thus, in 1828, the now wealthy James purchased his first land-holding: 90 acres of land owned by John Miller in Moorfields, south of Canterbury Road. (An Oatley Street and a Robert Street are now located in the Moorfields/Kingsgrove area, while Frederick Street is just south of the Beverley Hills railway station. All three streets are on the land formerly owned by the Oatley family.)
**PAGE 5**
It would appear that James was also a skilful farmer for soon he was being given further land grants by the authorities. The NSW Government Gazettes show that James was given a number of Government land grants: 30 OCT 1832, 24 DEC 1833 and 23 JAN 1834 in the St George area and one in Sydney 27 JUL 1835. Eventually James’ land holdings in the Gt George district extended south from Canterbury Road, past what are now the suburbs of Kingsgrove, Beverley Hills, Penshurt and Hurstville Grove to Oatley Bay and the suburb of Oatley. They covered about 785 acres in area.
James called the 300 acres of land granted to him in 1833 Needwood Forest after Needwood Forest near his former home in England. In his will James left Needwood Forest to Frederick. In 1881 Frederick sold this largely undeveloped land near Oatley. Although not strictly on the land owned by James Oatley (as far as I am aware), Oatley Place, Padstow Heights appears to be named after this early pioneer.
James and Mary had three CHILDREN: *James [p7], Frederick [p52] and George [see below]. Mary had a child, Robert, who was conceived while James was in prison. He was, however, adopted by James and given the family name, Oatley.
James appears to have also had a daughter, Marianne/Marion/Mary [NSW Death Index entry for Borrett, 1866 [I]]. She is not mentioned in James’ will. More information and details about Marianne and of what I have learnt about her are given near the end of page five.
G2 ROBERT OATLEY, farmer, cooper
Robert [7 FEB, 1815-16 JUN, 1876, somewhere in Pitt St, Sydney from asthma] was born at sea. He was buried 18 JUN, 1876 at the Haslems Creek Cemetery, now known as Rookwood Cemetery.
Robert’s birth was registered in Sydney, NSW, Australia on 2 AUG 1816 using the surname Oatley, even though James was not his biological father. Later Robert was baptised on 8 SEP, 1816, also with the surname Oatley. It is clear from James’ will that Robert was not his child. In the will Robert is referred to as “an adopted child” in contrast to the statement “my adopted son” used by James for his biological children. Also, Robert received only a small portion of James’ vast assets. Robert did not marry.
G2 GEORGE OATLEY
George [16 DEC 1820-30 MAY, 1821] was baptised 7 JAN 1821 in St Phillips C of E Church and was buried 1 JUN 1821.
Both James and Frederick MARRIED and had large families. Details of James jnr and his descendants are provided in SECTION II. SECTION III provides information on Frederick Stokes Oatley and his children’s families.
MARIANNE/MARION OATLEY
Marianne/Marion was the daughter of James Oatley. The NSW Index of Deaths names her mother as Sophia, but this name does not appear on her death certificate. More information will be included once more information is available.
**PAGE 6**
Numerous internet sites provide a wide variety of information on James Oatley. Much of the information lacks references. References are necessary for the serious enquirer to be able to consult them personally. It is unacceptable to copy work from one article to another even in a slightly altered form without reference to the source and to the original references. Some information is in conflict. Other published data appears to have been gathered using inadvisable research methods which can lead to false conclusions and statements which are ill-informed, speculative or conjecture. Concerning James Oatley, senior, I leave it to the reader to find and consult primary references, to critically appraise published material (including my own) and then to make up their own minds.
A few of the many internet sites referring to James Oatley include:
The Australian newspaper, Sydney, 1824to 1848, contains a number of references to the Oatley family [Trove-National Library of Australia]. One reference is to Mr Oatley, shoemaker, of George Street. It is unknown as to whether this article refers to Robert or to Frederick. It is possible that Frederick had by now relinquished the watchmaking business established by his father [The Australian 28 September 1844, p3].
The information contained in these sites is not necessarily accurate. Inaccurate information is frequently copied from one site to another. The readers are advised to check all information for themselves from the most primary sources that they can find. I disagree with the information in many sites, as I have indicated elsewhere.

SUB-DIVISION ONE: JAMES OATLEY JNR AND HIS DESCENDANTS
CHAPTER TWO: A MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT
G2 JAMES (STOKES) OATLEY, JUNIOR, [p5] coach builder, farmer, licencee, innkeeper, victualler and Member of Parliament.
James [16 APR 1817, Sydney-31 DEC, 1878, 93 Bourke Street, Woolloomooloo] was buried 2 JAN 1879 in Camperdown Cemetery (attached to St Stephens C of E Church). He was baptised on 18 May 1817 with the surname Oatley. In his father’s will he is named as James Stokes.
James, like his brother, Frederick, is designated in his father’s will as an adopted son even though James was his biological father. This adoption was a necessary procedure because his parents, James Oatley and Mary Stokes, were not legally married. Many convicts from this era lived in de facto relationships which were accepted by the authorities. During this period it was also a legal requirement of a will that adopted children be nominated as such if they were beneficiaries under the will.
James MARRIED twice. Firstly, James was MARRIED to ELEANOR JOHNSON, of Lane Cove, on 1 JAN 1839 by the Rev. John McGarrie at St Andrew’s Scots Church.
Eleanor, born Hannah Ellinor Morson, and also known as Ellen, Helena and Emily was born 8 JUN 1821. (Below is a comment about Eleanor’s parents by Brian Wills-Johnson). Eleanor [c1821-31 JAN 1865 aged 43 years] was buried 2 FEB 1865 in the Camperdown Cemetery (attached to St Stephens C of E Church). She died of fever.
Later, on 29 SEP 1870 in St Peter’s C of E, Cooks River, James was married to MARGARET CURTIS. Margaret [7 APR 1846-26 DEC 1920, 156 Palmer Street, Sydney] was buried in the Waverley Cemetery.
**PAGE 8**
Brian Wills-Johnson of Perth wrote concerning Eleanor Johnson:
“James Oatley Jnr’s first wife Eleanor was Eleanor JOHNSON, the daughter of Frances JOHNSON (Lord Melville February 1817). There are some commentators, mostly drawing on information from Violet Scahill’s “Pint Pots and Oranges – the Johnsons of the North Shore” who identify John FOSTER as Eleanor’s father, but this is not the case. Violet didn’t track down Foster’s arrival to the Surrey’s voyage that arrived in Sydney in March 1819 and so she thought Foster was the father of Eleanor’s brother (or perhaps half brother) William. This led her to believe that Eleanor was also the child of John Foster, and in fact in at least one of the Musters she is identified as Eleanor FOSTER.
But it is quite clear from the records that James Oatley Jnr’s first wife was in fact the Hannah Eleanor MORSON born 8 June 1821 to John MORSON (transported as MAWSON per “Ocean” he arrived 30 January 1816) and Frances MORSON. I haven’t been able to find a record of marriage between John MAWSON and Frances JOHNSON, though on 1 March 1819 they were among 8 couples who petitioned the Governor for permission to marry. Macquarie, eager for all those who had formed connections to contribute to the orderly future of society by marrying, assented. William JOHNSON was a six month-old infant at the time, and quite probably Mawson’s son.
Unfortunately, John MAWSON/MORSON died on 19 February 1821 when Frances was four months pregnant with Eleanor, and she subsequently formed the liaison with John FOSTER that led to the Foster confusion in Eleanor’s parentage. Eleanor eventually reverted to Eleanor JOHNSON, the name she as using at the time of her marriage to James Oatley Jnr.”
Brian has researched the Johnson Family Some information is available at: http://www.lofthouse.com/history/JohnsonW.html
A very thorough family history of Francis Mills/Johnson, the mother of Eleanor Morson/Johnson/Oatley has now been written and made available to members of the family.
The census returns for NSW for 1841 show James living in the St George region at his late father’s farm, Snugborough, where, he is named as the person in charge of the household. In 1844 James was a publican in Pitt Street, Sydney [The Australian, 16 October 1844, p3: digital image, internet], licensed to manage the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel [The Australian, 8 May 1844, p3: digital image, internet]. By the late 1850s James is a City of Sydney alderman living at 93 Bourke St, Woolloomooloo [1857-1879]. In 1868 he is recorded as a Justice of the Peace and an MLA in the NSW State Parliament. James lived at this address until his death.
There is an Oatley Street, Paddington. It is unknown to me whether this street, was named in James’ honour or whether it was named after his brother Frederick.

CHAPTER FOUR: THE DENTS OF PADDINGTON
The family of Josephine Oatley
G3 JOSEPHINE OATLEY [p9]
Josephine [28 AUG 1843-1 SEP 1930] was buried 2 SEP 1930 at the C of E Cemetery, Rookwood.
Josephine was MARRIED on 4 AUG 1863 to STEPHEN HENRY DENT, solicitor. The Sydney Morning Herald 7 August 1863, page 1 gives the date erroneously “30 March” [SMHDI-I].
Stephen [20 NOV 1843-10 APR 1894] was buried 11 APR 1894 at the C of E Cemetery, Rookwood. Stephen, the son of Henry and Jane, was baptised in Christ church, St Lawrence. Although Henry and Jane had a large family Stephen appears to be the only child who survived long enough to marry. Hence, Stephen’s children are the only grandchildren of Henry and Jane. (See EARLY DENT FAMILY below, [p22].)
It must have been really hard for Josephine, widowed at a young age and with such a large young family. I have no idea who helped her. The families of her brothers and sisters were fairly scattered and busy with their own doings. Also, her mother had died many years before.
The family lived initially in Bourke Street, SYDNEY for several years before moving to Macleay Street, (1871), 22 Brougham Street (1880) and 294 Oxford Street, PADDINGTON (1884-1900). Stephen is shown as a solicitor at 9 Harnett Street, Sydney (1876) and Old South Head Road, Paddington (1882-3). It is unknown whether this was also his residential address. By 1903 Josephine had moved to 280 Oxford Street, PADDINGTON, but her son, Stewart is shown still living at the former address. Josephine then moved to Spofforth Street, NEUTRAL BAY (1906), and Dovingill, 3 Kareela Road CREMORNE (1907-1930). The Dent family came from Dovingill, Westmorland (see below).
Josephine (Oatley) Dent kept in touch with her Oatley family As well as her son, Kenneth, for much of this time, (1920 onwards) her sister, Maria [p38], a childless, widow, and unmarried brother James [p5], lived with her in their old age.
For a brief period Josephine is shown living at Bromley Avenue, CREMORNE (1919-1920).
**PAGE 22**
THE EARLY DENT FAMILY
The Dent family can be traced back to ANTHONY DENT of Dovingill, Ravenstonedale, Westmorland (now Cumbria).
According to the International Genealogical Index, an Anthony Dent, the son of Stephen and Margaret, was baptised 24 SEP 1746.
He may have been the ANTHONY DENT who was married on 1 APR 1769 to FAITHY. Anthony is the first confirmed antecedent of the Dent family. He and Faithy had at least three CHILDREN: *Stephen, Peggy baptized in 1775 and Anne baptized in 1781. An Ann Dent was married in Kirkby-Stephen on 27 FEB 1804 to JOHN SMITH.
STEPHEN DENT was born 17 SEP 1770; and baptized 3 NOV 1770, the son of Anthony and Faithy. Stephen was married on 20 JAN 1794 to Mary TURNER and on 24 MAY 1795 to MARGARET PERKINS.
Nine CHILDREN born to Stephen and Margaret are shown on the IGI. These children are: Anthony (bp 19 MAR 1796), Henry (bp 31 JUL 1797), Faithy (bp 26 JAN 1799, Ruth (bp 4 NOV 1800), Ruth (bp 31 DEC 1802), Margaret (bp 11 FEB 1804), *Henry (1811-see details below), Stephen (bn 21 OCT 1816, bp 23 MAR 1817) and Abraham (bp 15 AUG 1819). Abraham was married 22 APR 1840 in Kirkby-Stephen to ISABELLA HUTCHINSON.
The family Bible mentions a tenth child of Stephen and Margaret. The name of this child is unknown to me.
HENRY DENT was born 27 JAN 1811, baptized 5 APR 1811 in Ravenstonedale, and died 8 OCT 1871.
He married JANE JONES about 1831. Jane died 31 OCT 1891. Both are buried in Rookwood Cemetery, NSW, Australia.
It is unknown when they migrated to New South Wales but it was in the early 1840s, before 1843.
The death certificate of Henry names his brother, Abraham, as his father. As mentioned earlier. Henry and Jane had a large family of children, mostly born in England, who did not survive into adulthood. Three children were born in Sydney, Australia: Stephen, Sarah (1845-1846) and Annette (1847-1847). Both Sarah and Annette were baptized in and buried from St James’ C of E, Sydney.
Henry and Jane were the parents of Stephen Dent who married Josephine Oatley.
**PAGE 23**
Stephen and Josephine had twelve CHILDREN: *Henry George [S1], Eleanor Jane [1865-20 February 1887], Fanny Louise [1866-19 MAR 1868], *Stephen James Oatley [S2, p25], *Percy Tom [S3, p28], *Mabel Alice [S4, p36], * Stanley [S5, p40], Maggie [1877-13 December 1879], *Stuart, *Lesley Oatley [S6, p41], *Kenneth Cleeve [S7, p43] and *Oscar Franklin [S8, p43].

Henry married twice. On 3 OCT 1885 in Whitton, near Narrandera, he married CATHERINE CAREY, the daughter of Thomas and Johanna.
Catherine [15 MAY 1864 (the date is given on her tombstone)-died 16 FEB 1889] was born in Beechworth, Victoria, and buried in the Old R.C. Cemetery, Narrandera.
On 24 JAN 1892 in Narrandera Henry married IDA EMILY ROWE, the daughter of James and Agnes Bessie Glass.
Ida [1871, Beechworth, Victoria-26 SEP 1940] died in London was in an air raid [SMHDI-I]. She is mentioned on the headstone on the grave of Henry.
Because he was a postmaster (and possibly a telegraphist before attaining that position) Henry moved around. As well as living in WHITTON the births of two children are registered in HAY (1887 and 1894). The registrations of the birth and death of a child in PADDINGTON (1886) and of a birth of a child in WOOLLAHRA (1904) may be in these districts because Henry was living in the area at the time or because his wives came to the city for these events. From 1912-1917 Henry was the postmaster at RYDE. During this period his son, Rowe, would have been studying medicine at Sydney University. Then Henry and Ida moved to ADELONG (1919), COONAMBLE (1920-1922), back to Falconer Street, RYDE (1923 and 1925) and WELLINGTON (1924). When Henry died in 1926 he was living at Wyperti Wattle Street, KILLARA where Ida and their daughter, Jean Isabel, a clerk, continued to live until at least 1939.
Henry and Catherine had two CHILDREN. Ethel M. was born and died in 1886 in Paddington. Josephine Bridget was born in 1887. No further records of Josephine have been found.

The family moved frequently. The family lived at 23 Renny Street, PADDINGTON (1895), Fitzgerald Street, WAVERLY (1896) and Renny Street/2 Walter Street, PADDINGTON (1897). SUB-DIVISION TWO FREDERICK OATLEY AND HIS DESCENDANTS
CHAPTER TEN: CONTINUING THE WATCHMAKING TRADITION
G2: FREDERICK (STOKES) OATLEY [p5]
Initially Frederick was a watchmaker, like his father. Later, by 1850, Frederick was employed as an Inspector of Abattoirs
Frederick [30 APR 1819-29 MAY 1890] was buried in the Waverley Cemetery. He was baptized on 23 MAY 1819 with the surname Oatley. In his father’s will he is named as Frederick Stokes. Frederick, like his brother, James, is designated in his father’s will as an adopted son even though James was his biological father. (See the note on page seven for a fuller explanation for this requirement in the will.)
Frederick was married on the 18 FEB 1841 to JANE WEEDON.
Jane [c1823-6 MAR 1884 aged 60 years] was buried in the Waverley Cemetery .She was the daughter of Thomas Elijah Weedon, Gentleman.
In 1848 Frederick was still a watchmaker living in George Street, Sydney (opposite the Town Hall). By 1850 the family lived at Strawberry Hill. Frederick had also changed his occupation. The family then lived in Elizabeth Street, South, 1851 (actually, possibly the same house as in 1850) and Bourke Street, Surry Hills (1853-6). By 1863 the family was living at Sandy Knowe Cottage, Ocean Street Upper, WOOLLAHRA. They stayed here until Jane died. It is assumed that Frederick then went to live with one of his children, probably one of his daughters, until he died. Frederick died at the home of Charles and Florence Broughton, Cambridge Street, Petersham [p-].
The street, was later renamed Trelawney Street. An early Sydney Directory shows Trelawney Street located between Ocean Street and Edgecliffe Road with Oatley Street, between Ocean Street and Edgecliffe Street. Oatley Street no longer exists.
Frederick and Jane had eleven CHILDREN: James Thomas (17 JUL 1844-28 NOV 1868), *Frederica Mary [Ch11, p53], Alfred Weedon (29 JUL 1848-28 NOV 1868), *Jessie Jane [Ch12, p55], *Edward Ernest Allan [Ch13, p62], *Florence [Ch14, p65], Mary Elizabeth (7 DEC 1854-31 JAN 1855), Elizabeth Frances (?-1 May 1856), *Frederick Augustus [Ch15, p67], *Edith Constance [Ch16, p75] and Herbert Henry (11 OCT 1861-24 DEC 1862).
James, accountant, and Alfred were accidentally drowned in Rose Bay in a boating accident during a fishing trip. A Coroner’s Inquest was held. A stained glass window, a memorial Chancel window, was erected in St Matthias Church, Paddington.

William [1848, Edinburgh, Scotland-7 JUN 1934] died at Wingello near Moss Vale aged 85 years. William was the son of Martyn J. Roberts, engineer, and Anne E. William from Pendarren House, Monmouthshire, ENG. At one stage William experimented in electrowheat culture.
Initially William and Frederica lived in St Clements Terrace, Petersham Road, MARRICKVILLE (1885) before moving to “Sunny Lawn”, George Street, MARRICKVILLE (1886-7). Later, by 1895, the family lived in Laycock Road, PENSHURST before moving to Kenilworth 53 Penshurst Street, PENSHURST (on the corner of Forest Road which is sometimes given as their address). In reality it may have been the same house with a change in the name of the street and the addition of street numbering. (Penshurst Street was formerly Laycock Road. When the railway was built through Penshurst Laycock Road was split into two sections by the railway. Confusion arose and so the north-western section of Laycock Road was renamed Penshurst Street. Over time Penshurst Street was extended until it reached Beverley Hills.)

Inis married twice. Inis married WALTER MCCONOCHIE, grazier, on 12 MAY 1917, in St Phillip’s C of E, Sydney [SMHDI-I]. Since the family lived in suburban Sydney it would appear that Walter’s property was actually run by a manager.
Walter [1862 Dunkeld, VIC-10 OCT 1938] was buried 11 OCT 1938 in the C of E Section of the Woronora Cemetery. He was the son of John, grazier, from Konongwootong Creek, Coleraine, VIC and Mary BOOTH [1834-20 December 1917] Mary, who died at her home, Norwood, Forest Road, Hurstville, NSW was buried in Waverley Cemetery [SMHDI-I].
Inis remarried in 1949 WILLIAM PATRICK CLIFFORD [1884-26 OCT 1978].
It is not known where Walter and Inis lived after their marriage. Possibly they lived on Walter’s grazing property, the location of which is unknown. (Lane Cove Road was later renamed “Pacific Highway”). (Walter’s address is sometimes also given as 16 Hastings Road, TURRUMURRA.) G5 GERALDINE HERRICK-CORBETT [p59]
Geraldine [1902-?] adopted the family name Conroy.
The engagement of Geraldine Conroy to Alfred V Morgan was announced in the Sydney Morning Herald on 15 April 1922, p8 [SMHDI-I], but no marriage took place.
The Sydney Morning Herald 31 July 1925 has an article about Geraldine being entertained on board one of the ships from the USA Fleet anchored in Sydney Harbour. The Sydney Morning Herald 8 October 1925 p11 has an article about Geraldine being refused permission to enter the United States of America to marry Lieu A E Colton from the warship “Pennayl”. Nothing more is known about Geraldine except that she was still alive when Muriel died [DC]. She has not been found under the possibly assumed surname of Conroy. The will of Muriel may provide more details about Geraldine.
G5 MURIEL “HENZEL” CONROY [p59] scientist
Henzel (as she was known) [22 JAN 1911-?] was married on 19 AUG 1939 in Dorset, England to Colonel HARLAND “Harley” HOLMES DEAN [Sydney Morning Herald 28 September 1939, p22 and 16 October 1941, p5 [SMHDI-I]]. They announced their engagement in May 1939 [Papers Past Evening Post (Wellington, NZ), Volume CXXVII, Issue 107, 9 May 1939, p14 [I]]. Henzel’s fiancé was from Wellington, NZ. He was the son of the late E H Dean.
Henzel was a boarder at the New England Girls’ School (an Anglican private school in Armidale, NSW): Sydney Morning Herald 16 January 1935, p17 [SMHDI-I].
Henzel, sometimes misspelt Kenzel, graduated with a B Sc from Sydney University in 1932 (1960 university calendar supplement). She specialised in Botany and zoology: Sydney university examination results, Sydney Morning Herald 23 December, 1930, p13 [SMHDI-I]. It would seem that Henzel then studied for an Honours year in 1931 since she graduated in 1932. This idea is reinforced by the information that the Sydney University awarded her a research scholarship in 1932 [Sydney Morning Herald 7 April 1932, p8 [SMHDI-I]].
There are also a number of references to Henzel in the social pages of the Sydney Morning Herald in the 1930s [SMHDI-I]. Her farewell party before she sailed to Europe was recorded in the social pages of the Sydney Morning Herald on 9 April 1937, p4 [SMHDI-I]. Information about the tour of Europe undertaken by Henzel and Elizabeth appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on 26 August, 1937, p21 [SMHDI-I]. Henzel returned to Sydney on 6 March, 1939 [Sydney Morning Herald 7 March 1939, p4: including a photo of Henzel [SMHDI-I]].
**PAGE 61**
G5 ELIZABETH SHIRLEY CONSTANCE CONROY [p59]
Elizabeth [31 JUL 1912-?] married twice. She married on 6 MAY 1938 PETER ANTHONY HAWKS [?-194k] [Sydney Morning Herald 26 MAY 1938, p21 [SMHDI-I]]. Peter was killed in WWII [I]. Elizabeth remarried in 196k.
There are a number of references to Elizabeth in the social pages of the Sydney Morning Herald in the 1930s [SMHDI-I]. There is a photo of Elizabeth and her son, Anthony, [Sydney Morning Herald 21 November, 1940 p15 [SMHDI-I]] after they returned to Australia to live during WWII. Eventually they returned to England to live.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN: PARRAMATTA AND RANDWICK
The family of Edwin Ernest Oatley and Annie Louise Rush
G3 EDWIN ERNEST OATLEY JP, [p52], auctioneer/estate agent, businessman
Edwin [18 AUG 1851-22 March 1920] died at Gosford (at a race meeting?). He was buried in the Waverly Cemetery. Edwin was MARRIED 11 JUL 1877 to Annie Louise Rush, the daughter of Isaac “Waltham” and Rachel E. Gould. Annie [1855-27 AUG 1938, Randwick] was buried privately the same day in the Waverly Cemetery.
As well as being an auctioneer and estate agent Edward was also very involved in the racing industry. This accounts for the family living mainly in Randwick and in Parramatta. At one time Edwin was the owner of the Warwick Farm Racecourse which was run on a daily basis by his sons Percy (as secretary) (q.v.) and Cecil (as manager) (q.v.).
Initially the family lived at Point Piper Rd, WOOLLAHRA and at 110 Queen Street, Woollahra. By 1888 they had shifted to Campbell Street, Parramatta where they remained until 1897 or longer. By 1900 the family had moved to “Melrose” Rae Street, Randwick before living in Brook Street, Coogee (1903/4), 1 Walsh’s Avenue, Randwick (1907), The Avenue, Randwick and Kirkham Allison Road, Randwick (1909) and then back to Campbell Street, Parramatta (1913). In 1904 Edwin’s address is also shown as Woodville Road, Bankstown. By 1915 Edwin and Annie were living at “Ostara” 1 Dutruc Street, Randwick. After Edwin’s death Annie lived with Percy for a few years before returning to the Dutruc Street, residence where she continued to live until she died.
Edwin’s business was simply entitled “Estate Co” in the telephone book. When Edwin died the business was taken over by Percy who added his initials to the title of the company. The family moved so often I suspect that several times Edwin bought a house, renovated it, resold it then purchased another house to renovate. Eventually, about 1915, Edwin retired and remained at the one location.
Annie and Edwin had five CHILDREN: *Alfred Ernest, *Mabel Alice [p63], Edwin Waltham (1881-18 FEB 1882, aged 8 months), *Percy Allan [p64] and *Cecil Vivian [p64].
Since none of Edwin’s sons had children he was the last person to bear the “Oatley” family name on this branch of the family.

SECTION I: G4 ALFRED ERNEST OATLEY
Alfred [18 MAY 1878, Woollahra-30 NOV 1941, Melbourne] was privately interred in Waverly Cemetery with other members of the family. Alfred did not marry.
SECTION II: G4 MABEL ALICE OATLEY [p62]
Mabel [4 AUG 1879, Woollahra-16 March 1955] died in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, England.
Mabel was married on 30 APR 1906 in St Jude’s Randwick to NORMAN EBSWORTH [2 JAN 1878-19 NOV 1949 [SMHDI-I 23 November 1949], clerk, auctioneer, stock and station agent, assistant at the Red Cross, clerk. He was the son of Edward Stanley and Eliza Mitchell.
Mabel and Norman lived in (Main Street,) Scone for many years [1907-1917]. In 1926 the family lived 3 Marden Hall, Springfield Avenue, Darlinghurst and were of independent means. The 1929 market crash seems to have affected Norman’s employment. In 1930 he was working for the Red Cross. They lived at 10 Savoy Flats, Hardie Street, DARLINGHURST [1930]. By 1933 they lived at Hampton Court, 39 Bayswater Road, Darlinghurst for a few years. From about 1936 they appeared to have separated. Norman continued to lived at Hampton Court, 39 Bayswater Road, Darlinghurst for a few more years, while Mabel and Joan lived at 1a Elizabeth Bay Road, Darlinghurst. Norman later moved to 12 Tusculum Street, Darlinghurst [1939-1941]. About 1943 they seem to have reconciled and were living together at1 Overseas, 15 Holbrook Avenue, MILSONS POINT.
Before he married Norman lived at home at Bronte House, Bronte.
There are a number of internet references to Norman’s involvement with cricket, including the comment that he was “a great run-getter in Sydney”. He was part of the Australian Cricket Team which toured Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1913-4. There were many references to him in the Sydney Morning Herald, especially in the period 1910 to 1920.
There is on the internet a family history of Norman Ebsworth with inaccurate information which disagrees with official NSW Registry of BDM’s data.
G5 JOAN EBSWORTH
Joan [30 MAY 1907, Scone, NSW-7 JUL 1987] died in Central Cleveland, ENG. Joan’s death notice appeared in England in The Times on 9 JUL 1987.
Joan married E. William Justus Ringquist [1903-1970] in England.
The Ringquists lived at Wootton Cottage, Eaglescliffe, co Durham, ENG.
Joan had two CHILDREN, M E E and J L. Their full names, the dates of their marriages and the names of their spouses are listed on the English Marriage Index [AI].

Percy [1883-15 March 1958] was cremated 17 March 1958 after a service at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. Percy did not marry.
In 1904 Percy lived at 369 George Street, Sydney. From 1906 to 1910 Percy is shown as the secretary of the Warwick Farm Racing Club at 202 Pitt Street, Sydney. He then moved to a residence at Sydney Road, Liverpool, which was within the grounds of the racecourse (1911-1914). After the death of his father Percy assumed responsibility for the Estate Agency and so moved back to the inner Sydney area. Percy lived with his mother at Kingscler, Greenknowe Avenue, Darlinghurst (1924-1926), 8 Onslow Avenue, Darlinghurst (1939-1941) and 4 Prince Albert Street, Mosman (1942-1958).

Beatrice [1886, near Twickenham, MDX, England-21 FEB 1966, Collaroy] had a funeral service on 24 FEB 1966 at St Faith’s C of E Narrabeen was followed by a private cremation. There were no children from the marriage.
In 1906 Cecil lived in Belmore Road, Coogee, near his parents. Cecil lived with his brother, Percy, at the Warwick Farm racecourse, on Sydney Road, Liverpool from 1911 to 1924. Cecil and Beatrix lived at 43 Macleay Street, Darlinghurst (1925-1928) and at Waratah House 43 Bayswater Road Darlinghurst (1930-1937/8) before moving to 33 Beach Road Collaroy for the rest of their lives. It is not known if this section of Macleay Street was renamed Bayswater Road.

Florence [9 FEB 1853, Bourke Street-22 JUL 1926, Summer Hill] was buried 23 FEB in the C of E Cemetery, Rookwood after a service in St Andrew’s C of E, Summer Hill.
Florence married on 15 AUG 1878 in St Matthias’ C of E, Paddington, CHARLES HENRY BROUGHTON, the son of Thomas S and Jane TINDALE. Charles, bank manager, glazier, [1852-19 JUL 1928] was privately buried with Florence in the C of E Cemetery, Rookwood.
Initially the family lived at Beulah Cottage 130 Queen Street, WOOLLAHRA. Charles was manager of the nearby ES and AC Bank. Later they lived at the residence of the bank, also in Quee Street. In May 1890 they lived in Cambridge Street, PETERSHAM before moving soon afterwards to Kinnoul Queen Street, ASHFIELD [1890-1]. From 1893 Florence and Charles lived in The Briars 55 Prospect Road, ASHFIELD. Charles now gives his occupation as “Independent means” for several years and then as “Glazier”. Since he had been in the banking industry I expect that the depression of the early 1890s brought a premature end to that occupation. After his wife died Charles and his daughter, Florence, moved to Floreda 55 Piggott Street, DULWICH HILL, where Florence had continued to lived in the 1930s after the death of her parents.
Florence and Charles had five CHILDREN: *Herbert Henry [p66],

Gwendoline [12 NOV 1880-c1907] died in Scotland, UK. In 1906 Gwendoline married CYRIL SHELLSHEAR, a medical practitioner born in 1882 to Walter and Clara M.
Soon after their marriage the couple travelled to Inverness, Scotland so that Cyril could complete his medical studies. Gwendoline died soon afterwards, possibly in childbirth. Cyril remarried in Scotland and had a child born in Sydney soon after his return to Australia. Eventually, about 1919, Cyril established a medical practice in Brisbane, QLD.
G4 LESLIE WEEDON BROUGHTON
Leslie [25 April 1882, Wollahra-1958] was buried 27 FEB 1958 in Blenheim, NZ. He married twice, both times in New Zealand.
In 1916 Leslie married FLORENCE MARY AMBLER [c1891-6 SEP 1923]. In 1925 he married VIOLETTA ALMA WINGLEY LANG. There are on the internet some interesting newspaper articles about this unhappy, unsuccessful marriage.
G4 FLORENCE ANNIE BROUGHTON, nurse
Florence was born 22 JUL 1883 [SMHDI-I]. Her death has not been found.
Florence is mostly on the electoral rolls as living with her parents from 1906 until their deaths. She does not appear on the Australian electoral rolls after 1930 (Ancestry).

**PAGE 70**
SECTION II: G4 FREDERICK “DUDLEY” WEEDON OATLEY [p67], grazier, soldier
Dudley [8 NOV 1884-28 March 1919] was buried 30 March 1919 in the C of E SECTION of the Waverly Cemetery after a service with full Military Honours at St John’s C of E, Darlinghurst. Dudley died from gangrene, the result of a hydatid cyst in his lung and gassing during his service in WWI (see note below).
On 9 NOV 1907 Dudley MARRIED in St Phillip’s C of E, Sydney, ADELAIDE “ANDREE” KAEPPEL, the daughter of Carl William Herbert, merchant, and Emily Annette EDWARDS.
Andree [1886 Melbourne-died 31 OCT 1952] was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. Later her ashes were interred with Dudley (and with her brother, Carl) in Waverly Cemetery.
NOTE: The gassing in WWI was fortuitous for Dudley and his family and for his reputation. Dudley would have died from the hydatid cyst in his lung even without the gassing, only more ignominiously. The cyst was probably already causing problems when he received the gassing. It may even have made the effects of the gassing look worse than they really were.
A hydatid cyst can grow to a size which would completely occupy an adult human chest cavity. They can reach a capacity of five litres or more; that is, the capacity of half a laundry bucket or more in size. (The author has seen a hydatid cyst of this capacity which had been removed from the abdomen of a patient.)
As the hydatid cyst grew in Dudley’s chest cavity it would have impaired the beating of his heart, impeded the blood flow in the major blood vessels to and from the lungs and the rest of his body and restricted the functioning of his lungs, all mimicking the effect of gassing (including breathing difficulties and severe gangrene).
On 8 January 1914 Dudley was committed for trial by the Coroner in Melbourne on a manslaughter charge. He had killed an 18-year-old cyclist near Donnybrook, just north of Melbourne. The article on the committal was recorded in The Argus:
Further articles on the trial appeared in the Argus in early February, 1914 [I]. Eventually the Jury found Dudley not guilty of the charge and he was acquitted.
Dudley was a grazier at Umeralla Station, BUNYAN, just north of Cooma before WWI and at BOWRAL after WWI. He almost certainly developed the hydatid cyst as a consequence of this farming: the adult tapeworm lives in farm dogs who are infected when they ingest cyst-infected meat.
**PAGE 71**
Dudley and Andree had three CHILDREN, *Frederick John Gilbert [p72], *Peter Barlee Kaeppel [73] and *Rachel Annette [p74].
Andree later remarried 8 FEB 1930 in St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Phillip Street, Sydney, WILLIAM JOHN RENDAL SCOTT [21 JUN 1888, Bingara,-19 NOV 1956, Adelaide]. William was son of Donald A H and Maria (Marcia) Caroline STREET.
After her first husband’s death Andree lived with her young children at William Street, GORDON (1919-1923), at Hinemoa Florence Avenue, COLLAROY (1923-1926) and at Tankerton Buckingham Street, KILLARA (1927-1928). Andree and her second husband lived at 3 Spencer Road, KILLARA before their separation in the late 1930s.
Andree continued to live at this address until about 1946. She spent the rest of her life at 7 Greenknowe Avenue POTTS POINT. When Peter enlisted in WW2 his wife, Mary, moved in with Andree. After the war Peter and Mary continued to live in the Killarah house until they separated in the mid-1950s.
In 1922 the famed author, D. H. Lawrence, visited New South Wales. During this visit he wrote his novel, Kangaroo. Soon after his arrival in Australia, on Sunday 28th May 1922, Lawrence and his wife spent the day at Collaroy. A number of characters in his new novel and aspects of the setting of the novel appear to be based on the people Lawrence met on that visit to Collaroy. These include Andree, William Scott and others of their circle of friends, and the house in which they met, most likely Hinemoa. Cecil Oatley and his wife, Beatrice, [p/-] also appear to be involved. Details of this visit and these people and much more on the subject are discussed in “The Darroch Hypothesis” which is available on the internet. (Using “Peter Oatley”, “Carl Oatley”, “Trixie Oatley” and “Sally Rothwell” in a search engine of the internet also provides useful data (although I, personally, do not agree fully with everything which has been written; not everything written by others accords with my own personal research.)
Extant records also suggest that Andree was visiting Collaroy on that exciting Sunday rather than living there daily at that time. It was not until about a year later that Andree and her children moved to Collaroy to live in Hinemoa (see above). Andree was an educated woman, one of the early women to graduate from Sydney University with a B.A. She graduated in 1906.

CHAPTER TWENTY ONE: A FAMILY MYSTERY
The family of William Hewit
G2: WILLIAM ANDREW HEWIT, storekeeper [p78]
William [c1849-12 MAY 1931] died at 42 Henson Street, Summer Hill and was buried 13 MAY 1931 in the R.C. Section of Rookwood Cemetery.
William MARRIED in Newcastle 29 APR 1884 SARAH MATILDA COBB.
Sarah was born in 1863 in Fremantle, WA the daughter of James and Emily EASTWOOD. No death has been found for Sarah in any Australian state. It is possible that she died in the United States of America, USA. She is not mentioned on William’s death certificate. Nor are any of William’s children named on the certificate.
In 1889 William and Sarah lived at 2 Centennial Terrace, Laman Street, NEWCASTLE.. When he died in 1931 William was living at 42 Henson Street, SUMMER HILL.
William appears to have been deserted by his family. The cause of this rift is unknown.
At 1pm on Wednesday 30 January 1907 Sarah, Jessie, Arthur, Walter, George and his wife left Sydney for San Francisco on the RMS Sonoma [SMHDI-I: Sydney Morning Herald 30 January 1907, p10]. A more thorough search of USA and shipping records may answer some of these mysteries about this family.
The CHILDREN of William and Sarah are: *George Cobb, *William Andrew (registered as HEWITT), an unnamed son (probably Frederick Joseph, registered as HEWITT) was born 29 NOV 1887 (NMH), an unnamed son (probably *Leslie Ellis, registered as HEURT) born 16 NOV 1889 (NMH), *Arthur Edward, Jessie Winifred born 1893 and Walter Esbert born 1895.
A child Frederick J, (Joseph?), Hewit was buried in the Sandgate Cemetery 3 APR 1889 (NMH).
**PAGE 89**
G3 GEORGE COBB HEWIT
George was born 6 JAN 1885 in Newcastle. He was MARRIED 23 JAN 1907 in the Congregational Church, Surry Hills, to OLIVE MARY HILLIER STEPHENS, saleswoman. George’s sister was a witness to the marriage.
Olive was born about 1887 to William John Hillier, wood machinist and Catherine CANAVAN
No further information on George or Olive has been found.
G3 WILLIAM ANDREW HEWIT
William was born 21 SEP 1886 (NMH-unnamed)
William married ROSE. Rose was born in America to an American mother and a German father.
The 1930 American census shows that William and Rose were living at 1542 Lawton Street, San Francisco with their children V M 16 W A 8, B E 4 and R L 1 [AI]
G3 LESLIE ELLIS HEWIT
Leslie Ellis, (registered with the surname HEURT) was born 16 NOV 1889 (NMH).
Nothing more is known about Leslie.
It should be noted that a Leslie Ellis Hewitt [1879-1954, Wyong] was born in the Hunter district to George Henry and Sarah A. He married HILDA MARGARET ROBERTSON in 1914 in Newcastle. Hilda [1887-26 May 1978, Singleton]was the daughter of John and Sarah E.
The information above is in the process of being verified.
G3 ARTHUR EDWARD HEWIT, salesman
Arthur was born 12 OCT 1891 and died DEC 1975 in the United States of America. He was married aged 29 (about 1920), in the United States of America, to FLORINCE born in Pennsylvania, USA. Florince was about two years older than Arthur.
Arthur and Florince were living at 20 Montecito Avenue, San Francisco when the American census of 1930 was taken. They had no children. The census states that Arthur migrated to the USA in 1907.
Arthur passed his Technical exams at the Crown Street branch of the Sydney Technical College in 1904 [SMHDI-I: Sydney Morning Herald 6 January 1905, p3].
