INTRODUCTION
Much of this family history was researched in the 1990s, mainly as a joint effort between Doreen Smith, a member of the Catford/Bennett family, and myself, a descendant of the family of John Bennett and Mary Bathgate. Other members of the Catford/Bennett family, especially Stephen Henry, also provided us with very useful information. To them I give my grateful thanks.
When checking the records of Stephen and Doreen concerning the early generations of the Catford family in Somerset and Bristol I found that many more records were now available than when they recorded their information about the family in the late 1990s and in 2004 respectively. The volume of these records was such that they necessitated their own website. There were too many records to include in the record of the Catford family from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (Book Two [p-].
The known family of Catfords from Bristol links back to a family of Catfords from the town of Dulverton in northern Somerset near the Devon border. The Bristol family of Catfords had settled in Abbots Leigh located 4.8 km (3 miles) west of central Bristol on the south side of the Avon Gorge.
Researching families from Bristol is complicated because of the destruction of the Records Office and the information contained within it during the bombing raids on Bristol during World War Two. The pages of the 1851 census where the Catford family was recorded are also now missing from some versions of the 1851 census. Fortunately a researcher has located a copy of these missing pages and has posted the relevant information on the internet.
Also, an index to the 1851 census compiled by the Bristol and Avon Family History Society some years ago still exists. This index provided the ages of people and their household groupings.
The Catford name was also prevalent in Devon in the 1700s and 1800s, although Catford families were found in other English counties as well, especially in Greater London.
THE MEANING OF THE NAME CATFORD
Catford is a very old English surname. It was derived from the place name of Catford, a district in the county of Kent which is now part of Greater London. Originally the name had the older form “Catforth”. The name was given to people who lived in an area also populated by wild cats. The name CATEFORD appeared in a 1311 document from Kent, followed by a record of a CATFORDE in 1332. Another early appearance of the name is that of Edward CATEFORD from Yorkshire in 1379. His name was included on the list for the Yorkshire Poll Tax for that year.
**PAGE 3**
CHAPTER ONE: THE FAMILY IN NORTH-WEST SOMERSET
The family lived in the city of Dulverton and also in some of the villages surrounding Dulverton. These villages included East Anstey and Brushford. One branch of the family moved further away to Brompton Regis north-east of Dulverton.
Families bearing the name Catford lived in or near Dulverton, Somerset, England for several centuries, starting in the 1600s. By the time of the 1881 census of England only four people bearing the name Catford remained in the Dulverton area. A number of the Catford lines dating back to the 1600s in Somerset may be traced through sources available on the internet.
DULVERTON AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES
Dulverton, named “Dolvertune” in the Doomsday Book, is located on the River Barle in Somerset near the border with Devon. The township lies on the south-eastern edge of Exmoor and is about 21km/13 miles NW of Tiverton. Nearby to Dulverton are the villages of West Anstey to the west, East Anstey to the south and Brushford to the SE. Brompton Regis is located about 15 km NE of Dulverton. Some Catford families lived in these villages rather than in the township of Dulverton.
.
William and Jane Catford, descendants from the Catford family from Dulverton emigrated to South Australia, where the name Catford is now relatively abundant. They arrived in that state in October 1848. The history of this Catford family has been recorded in a book, “The Catford Chronicles”.
Stephen, a descendant of William Legg Catford, [p-], has also traced the New South Wales line of Catfords from Dulverton. Information about the family has been expanded by both Doreen and this author.

CHAPTER TWO: THE FAMILY IN AND NEAR BRISTOL
This branch of the family was associated with Abbots Leigh, west of central Bristol as well as becoming established in the City of Bristol proper.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,50134.0.html
Parish Registers for Bristol, Gloucestershire, from 1800 to 1837 list six Catford marriages: Robert, who married twice (details below), Elizabeth (transcribed as Calford (sic)), Mary Ann, William and Elizabeth.
Elizabeth married WILLIAM HARTLAND on 5 NOV 1807.
GENERATION 7: ROBERT CATFORD
Robert [17 JUL 1780, Dulverton, SOM-18 (?) JAN 1852] was BURIED 25 JAN 1852 in the graveyard of in the Church of St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol.[FS].
Robert and William Catford and other members of the extended Catford family had links to the Holy Trinity C of E Abbots Leigh [FS]. There are so many Catford baptisms and marriages in the church it would suggest that the family lived in this region of Greater Bristol.
ABBOTS LEIGH is an ancient village located 4.8 km (3 miles) west of the centre of Bristol on the left bank of the River Avon [I]. Lime stone quarrying occurs in its vicinity.
The village was named in the Doomsday Book as “Lege”. A photo of the Holy Trinity Parish Church, built in the Gothic style, may be found on the internet. The parish church is linked to the church of St John the Baptist, Bedminster. The church at Abbots Leigh was restored and partially rebuilt in 1847-8 following damage from a fire. The Catford family would have taken an interest in the restoration of their family church. When Abbots Leigh became part of the City of Bristol it became part if the district of St Philip. Hence, the Holy Trinity Church was allocated several different locations depending on the date of the life event.
Doreen has stated that Robert’s parents were William Catford [1745-1782], who married Ann Oland [1743-1782] and that his grandfather was William Catford [1710, Dulverton-1780, Dulverton], who married in 1741 in Brompton Regis, SOM Mary Budd [1719-1790]. His grandfather, William’s, younger brother, Robert, born in 1712 was named as the forebear of the South Australian family group. No references were provided.
To date this author has not found this link between Robert and his father, William in any records.
Robert married twice. He MARRIED SARAH TUCKER [c 1774/5-18 MAY 1823] on 19 JUL 1807, in Bristol at the Church of St Nicholas and St Leonard. Sarah was BURIED in the churchyard of the Church of St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol. Her age was given as 48 years.
**PAGE 9**
Robert and Sarah had at least three CHILDREN: Mary Ann, *William [see below] and Elizabeth.
Robert REMARRIED MARY PRICE [c1792/3-1859, Bristol] on 5 DEC 1830 in the church of St Augustine-the-Less.
Robert and Mary had two CHILDREN: Ann and *William Legg [p5]. William’s second given name may have been linked to the family name of Robert’s son-in-law, Daniel Legg.
The 1851 census records for Bristol listed Robert, 71, born Dulverton, lath rendor, Mary, 58, Ann, 19, dressmaker, and W L 17, plumber, all living in Philadelphia Street, St Pauls, Bristol [I].
Robert and William Catford and other members of the extended Catford family had links to the Holy Trinity C of E Abbots Leigh [FS]. There are so many baptisms and marriages in the church it would suggest that the family lived in this part of Greater Bristol.
**PAGE 10**
THE CHILDREN OF ROBERT CATFORD
DIVISION ONE: G8 MARY ANN CATFORD
Mary married DANIEL LEGG on 13 OCT 1828 at St Pauls, Bristol.
Nothing more is known about this branch of the family. There are several records for a death of a Daniel Legg/Legge in the 1830s in Somerset. There are many death records for the name Mary or Mary Ann Legg/Legge. If Daniel died young Mary may have remarried.
DIVISION TWO: G8 WILLIAM CATFORD
William Catford [c1818/9-1864] was buried on 17 JUL 1864 in the churchyard of the Holy Trinity Church, Abbots Leigh, Bristol.
William.married SOPHIA HANSON [c 1813-1875] on 3 JAN 1836 in St Augustine-the Less Church, BRISTOL. Sophia was buried 13 FEB 1875 in the Holy Trinity Church, Bristol.
They had five children, *Sarah Elizabeth, *William Paynton and *Edwin Robert, Mary Ann and Henry George
Mary Ann was baptized 24 AUG 1845 and was buried 28 SEP 1845 in the Church of St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol [FS].
Henry George was baptised 11 MAY 1851 in the Church of St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol.and was buried 14 MAR 1852 in the Holy Trinity Church, Bristol.
This family in Bristol is well documented.
In 1851 William, 32 and Sophia, 30 (sic) were living at Clarence Place, St Philip and St Jacob. They had four boarders living with them, but not their children. Sophia’s age has been transcribed incorrectly as 30 on the 1851 census, probably due to poor handwriting or to a now poorly preserved record, when her correct age was actually 36.
Sophia’s age is shown as 62 years on her death certificate
At the time of the1851 census Sarah Elizabeth, 14 years and William L (sic), 11yrs were living with the family of Richard Crocker. In later records William’s name is recorded as William Paynton. Edwin, 8, was a boarder at the free school, Colston Hospital, in St Augustine, Bristol.
In 1861 William, 44, Sophia, 46, Sarah, 24 and Edwin, 18 were living in Clarence Road, St Philip and St Jacob.
Stephen has researched and recorded further information on this branch of the family. There is also information about the family on the internet.

CHAPTER ONE: THE CATFORD FAMILY IN ENGLAND
DIVISION ONE: INTRODUCTION
The Catford family is linked to the family of John Bennett and Mary Bathgate through their youngest son, Alma. Alma’s daughter, Annie May married Albert Edward Field Catford. I am a descendant of John and Mary’s eldest child, Mary Jane Bennett, who married Albert Wood Aspinall. Both the Bennett and the Aspinall family histories have been written up, at least in part.
Since the 1990s much more family history information has become available, which has meant that it has been necessary to extend the earlier investigations. Doreen published the family history of her line in 2006. My version of her lineage is included in my publication of the Bennett family history.
I am very grateful to Doreen for her assistance in helping me to trace the Catford branch of the Bennett family. I also appreciate the co-operation of other members of the Catford family not linked to the Bennett line. Through their help it has been possible to construct this fuller version of this Catford family in New South Wales.
There are also extensive Catford families in South Australia (with whom I have had contact) and in Melbourne. An early link between the New South Wales and South Australian families is known, but no link between them and the Victorian Catford family is known at present.
The early history of the Catford family from Somerset, England may be found above in Book One. This history begins with Robert Catford from Dulverton who moved to the outskirts of Bristol as a young man. There are sufficiently many Catford families associated with the Holy Trinity Church at Abbots Leigh to suggest that a whole branch of the Catford family moved to this district.

**PAGE 19**
DIVISION TWO: THE EARLY FAMILY MEMBERS
The known family of Catfords from Bristol links back to a family of Catfords from the town of Dulverton in northern Somerset near the Devon border. The Bristol family of Catfords had settled in Abbots Leigh located 4.8 km (3 miles) west of central Bristol on the south side of the Avon Gorge.
SUB-DIVISION ONE: THE CATFORD FAMILY FROM DULVERTON
Only a brief outline of the family from Dulverton and from Bristol is provided in this account of the Australian Catford family from New South Wales. An expanded account of the Catford family from Somerset is available in Book One above.
The generation numbering for this book starts with Robert Catford who is found at Generation 7 in Book One or at Generation Gin this account.
GENERATION A: EDWARD CATFORD [?-1610] married Joan and had a son, JOHN
GENERATION B: JOHN CATFORD [23 APR 1601-?] (or John, bp 17 APR 1601 [FS]) married ALICE and had a son, ROBERT.
GENERATION C: ROBERT CATFORD [19 NOV 1635, East Anstey-MAY 1699] was buried 21 MAY 1699 in Dulverton. He married in 1673 HONOR HOBBS.
They had 14 children including *William [see Generation D]. Further details of the children of Robert and Honor may be found on the alternative Catford website.
GENERATION D:
WILLIAM CATFORD [22 APR 1681-18 MAR 1719, Dulverton] married MARY HODGES on 19 JUN 1705 in Swell, SOM.
William had four children: *William [see Generation E below], *Robert, Mary and Joan.
Descendants of William migrated to New South Wales in 1877. Descendants if Robert, William and Jane Catford, migrated to South Australia in October 1848, thus creating the two main lines of Catford descendants in Australia. There is also a Melbourne family of Catfords in Australia. The overseas origin of this family is still unknown to the author.
GENERATION E:
SECTION ONE: ROBERT CATFORD

Robert [17 JUL 1780, Dulverton, SOM-18 (?) JAN 1852] was BURIED 25 JAN 1852 in the graveyard of the Holy Trinity C of E Abbots Leigh [FS].
Robert and William Catford and other members of the extended Catford family had links to the Holy Trinity C of E Abbots Leigh [FS]. There are so many baptisms and marriages in the church it would suggest that the family lived in this part of Greater Bristol.
Robert and Sarah had at least three CHILDREN: Mary Ann, William and Elizabeth.
Robert REMARRIED MARY PRICE [c1792/3-1859, Bristol] on 5 DEC 1830 in the church of St Augustine-the-Less.
Robert and Mary had two CHILDREN: Ann and *William Legg [p-].
The family of William Legg Catford is continued below. Details of the families of William’s brothers and sisters may be found in Book One above.

CHAPTER TWO: BORN IN ENGLAND AND DIED IN AUSTRALIA.
G2 WILLIAM LEGG CATFORD [p20]
William [c1833/4-11 JAN 1882 [SMHDI-I]] was BAPTIZED 6 APR 1834 in Temple, Bristol.
William was BURIED in the C of E Section of Rookwood Cemetery on 13 JAN 1882 [SMHDI-I].
William’s age at the time of his death was recorded as 47 years old. His parents were recorded as unknown. William’s death is listed on the Death Index under the name “Casford”.
William MARRIED twice. He married SARAH ANN WICKS [c1835-15 DEC 1870] on 12 DEC 1852 in the Holy Trinity C of E Abbots Leigh, Bedminster (now a suburb of Bristol, south of the River Avon). Sarah was the daughter of Jeremiah Wicks. Their marriage is on the indexes under CALFORD (sic). Sarah’s surname is given as Weeks on one record.
Sarah died in childbirth. The child was stillborn. Sarah and her stillborn child were buried in the Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bedminster, SOM-a southern suburb of Bristol-on 16 DEC 1870.
William married ELIZA HANKS [3 DEC 1835-20 DEC 1905] on 5 APR 1873 in Highworth, near Swindon, in Wiltshire. Eliza, the daughter of Robert, engineer, was born in Bristol and died in Sydney, Australia. She was BURIED 22 DEC 1905 in the C of E Section of Rookwood Cemetery.
The reason why William and Eliza came to Sydney is unknown. One possibility is linked to William Wicks, the brother of William’s first wife, Sarah, who came to Australia with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Rosina [personal communication]. Another possibility is that Sydney was recommended as a desirable city in which to live by Eliza’s two sisters, Ann [see below] and Maria Saunders Acland [c1832-FEB 1883] [SMHDI-I: 12 JAN 1882, p1; 17 FEB 1883, p20] who had come to Australia much earlier. Maria was the wife of Robert Elson Acland.
**PAGE 22**
[Ann married in 1856 Edward John Wormley. Edward died in 1861. Ann died in November 1881 as Ann Field. She was buried 18 NOV 1881 in the Camperdown Cemetery. Edward and Ann had three children one of whom died very young.
Ann remarried in 1876 Henry Hudson Field, botanist, as Ann Harting. Since no other records for Harting births, deaths or marriages appear in the New South Wales Indexes, the name is almost certainly a corruption of Wormley on a badly-written, now difficult-to-read record. The funeral notices for Henry Hudson Field in the Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 16 JULY 1883, p10 confirm this information about Eliza’s sister, Ann, and her children.]
William died at his residence, 17 Waterloo Place. Sydney.
William and Sarah had five known CHILDREN: *Sarah Archibald [p23], *Rutherford William [p23], Emily Ann [14 DEC 1865-4 SEP 1871], *Robert Wicks [p23] and Walter Charles [17 JUN 1869, Lower Easton-2 JAN 1870, St Pauls.]. Walter was buried in the Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol.
William and Eliza had four CHILDREN: *Walter Charles [p24], *Charles Edmond [p24], *Elizabeth Ann and *Alfred Edward Field [p24].
G3 ELIZABETH ANN CATFORD
Elizabeth [17 JUL 1877-9 FEB 1888] was born at sea on board the S S “Salisbury”, the ship on which the family came to Australia in 1877. They arrived in Sydney on 2 SEP 1877. On the immigration lists their name is shown as “Calford”. Elizabeth was killed by a tram in George Street, West while doing an errand for her mother. The location was also given as Parramatta Road near Abercrombie Street. An inquest was held [SMHDI-I: 11 FEB 1888, p7 and p11].

DIVISION ONE: MARRIED IN ENGLAND
GI JOHN SANBROOK
John [c1823-4 DEC 1915], carpenter and joiner, builder, was the son of John and Mary A. His death appears on the register as Sandbrook. He was buried on 6 DEC 1915 at the Long Bay Cemetery [SMHDI-I].
John married LYDIA ROSE, [c1822-27 NOV 1906], the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth [c1794-15 JUN 1876, Sydney, NSW], on 2 February 1840 in Bristol, England.
John and Lydia migrated to New South Wales, Australia aboard the “Lady Amhurst” with their two daughters, Rhoda and Emma. The family left Plymouth, England on 5 JAN 1849 and reached Sydney, Australia on 21 MAY 1849. Lydia’s mother, Elizabeth Rose, [c1794-17 JUN 1876] also came to Australia [SMHDI-I]. Elizabeth died at Ross Street, Kindston North.
Initially the family lived in Maitland, where further children were born. By the 1860s and 1870s the family lived at Ross Street, Kingston North, Newtown, now called Camperdown. By the 1880s John was living at “Portland” Arden Street, Coogee Bay. He was elected to the local council in 1891 [SMHDI-I].
John worked as a joiner on the construction of St Andrew’ C of E Cathedral, Sydney [SMHDI-I 30 Nov 1868]. He won the contract to construct the Glebe Town Hall in the early 1880s. There are a number of other references to John Sanbrook in the Sydney Morning Herald. He is often involved in matters of the borough council in the 1870s. Later John became a building contractor with his son, running a firm Sanbrook and Son. This firm eventually became the firm of Sanbrook Bros Contractors.
On the 1903 electoral roll John gave his address as 56 Waitara, COMO, while Lydia gave her address as 57 Parkesvale, HOLDSWORTHY.

G2 FREDERICK GEORGE SANBROOK [1 MAR 1851-1851] was baptized 31 MAR 1851 in Maitland. He was the twin brother of Horatio. His death is registered under the name Sandbrook.
The Sanbrook family was prominent and well-known around Sydney, especially until about the 1920s. There are numerous references to the family in the Sydney Morning Herald. As well as references to the many building tenders and contracts with which they were involved there are references to numerous other activities. Some of these were references to success in sports such as cricket, golf and cycling. Other articles concern their involvement in local government. The family ran a Steamer from Como on the southern bank of the Georges River to Parkesvale, a picnic and ground which they had established on the northern bank of the river somewhere past what is now East Hills. The exact location has not been found as yet.
There were several racehorses named Sanbrook. Their owners are unknown, but they may have been owned by one or more family members, especially Ebenezer Samuel Sanbrook.
Despite the family’s prominence in the Sydney area in the later1800s and early 1900s, the Sanbrook name has not persisted in any permanent way. No names of streets, park, buildings or similar developments now carry the name of Sanbrook.
