ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to thank the following organizations and people for their contributions to this family history:
[a] the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Genealogical Society of Victoria;
[b] the English Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages;
[c] the Church of Latter Day Saints for various English records including the International Genealogical Index and census records;
[d] the many sources of information useful to the family historian found on the Internet, especially the FreeBMD, FreeCEN, Ancestry.com and Genuki;
[e] New Zealand Archives and other official services for information available on the internet, including newspapers and registrations for births, deaths and marriages;
[f] Vital Records for various Canadian states found on the internet;
[g] family members who have contributed useful information, especially Paul Andrew, who put much of the family history onto the computer in the 1980s and early 1990, and the late Ervin Simpson. Ervin undertook extensive research into the Andrew and Batt families in the 1960s and early 1970s. Much more information about these two families is now available, including English census records and New Zealand records. Wherever possible these new details have been included in this manuscript. The late Jane Godfrey did extensive research into the Scottish families, much of which had been reaffirmed wherever possible, and data, such as baptisms, added to the original records.

INTRODUCTION
The availability of information about families in Devon is limited. The history of families from Devon, England is hard to trace from Australia because the relevant authorities have often been reluctant to release many of their records, especially to the compilers of indexes and of similar collections of data. This restriction applies to burial records for inclusion in the National Burial Index. Many indexes which have been made are incomplete and so do not include the whole period until civil registration commenced, and even beyond that time. Also, many records for Devon were destroyed during the bombing of Exeter during World War Two.

Prior to July 1837 parish records are the main source for information about births, baptisms, deaths and marriages. Many of these records for Devon are not indexed, are indexed for only a limited period of time, or are poorly indexed. Usually only the date of baptism of a child is recorded, without the date of birth or age of the child. The age at which a child was baptized varied considerably from a few weeks old (or even just after birth if the child was not expected to live for long) to many months (or even years) old. Some researchers make the error of confusing the date of baptism with the date of birth, which can be very different. Very little detail, apart from the date, is given in the parish records and so it is difficult to establish confirmed relationships between people.

Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages commenced in July, 1837; but registration was not compulsory until about 1874. Parish records after 1837 are still of immense value to the researcher if they are available. Very little detail about births, deaths and marriages, apart from the date and place, is required in England and Wales civil registrations. Usually no relatives are named unless the informant is a relative. The mother’s maiden name does not occur on birth certificates. Hence, the relevant certificates are of very limited value to the family historian.

Census records are an important source of material for family history. They are readily available for the ten year periods commencing in 1841 to 1901. Records for 1911 are now available at a cost. However, many pages are now missing from the census records due to damage or deterioration; or they are very hard to read as the ink has now faded. Hand-writing may be hard to read. There are many spelling mistakes which complicate searches of the electoral rolls.

To trace a family further back from the known information it is necessary to link the known data from that known generation to the next generation further back. It is also imperative to collect as much information as possible about other families with similar names to avoid confusion between the families. Often this is difficult with common names. There is no place for conjecture in family history. It is also necessary to look critically at data to ensure that it is plausible, that is, that it makes common sense. This includes information about a family collected by other members of that family.

The spellings of names and addresses can vary. These variations need to be searched for and recorded. Complications may arise when several different families with similar names live in the same locality.

A useful gazetteer for place names in Devon may be found at

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Gazetteer/

In accordance with recognized family history policy I have checked for myself as many records as possible before considering the relevance, or otherwise, of these records.

The family name (or surname), ANDREW, which means “manly” is particularly common in Cornwall and Devon. Many families are found on the extant historical records. Often in the surviving records the names Andrew and Andrews are used interchangeably. This also makes trying to search for family members more complicated, especially when a flourish at the end of a “w” is interpreted as an “s”. The name ANDREWS is actually a corruption or shortening of “Andrew’s son”.

CHAPTER ONE: THE CONFIRMED EARLY ANDREW FAMILY HISTORY

The first members of the family known for certain are brothers WILLIAM and ISAAC ANDREW born in Frithelstock to John and Sarah Andrew (see Section Two, p3).
Sarah’s maiden name is uncertain, as are the date and place of their marriage. In family history it is unacceptable to simply find a possible marriage or other event and to then assume that it is the wanted event or information. The details about a person’s marriage or other life events must arise from other sources or records relating to the event in some way. These may include sources such as letters, photographs or official records which provide clues about the event under consideration.

The 1841 census gives very few details about people and about the relationships of people within a household. The ages of children to 14 years old were specific for their age .For people 15 and over, ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 10 years. Thus, people 15 to 19 years old were considered to be 15, those 20 to24 were considered to be 20, and so forth. Sometimes the census takers, called enumerators, wrote down the exact age, or rounded up, not down..
The 1851 census provides much more detailed information about households and the relationships of people to one another and their exact ages.

SECTION ONE: BROTHERS WILLIAM AND ISAAC ANDREW

The 1841 census record for William has not survived. In June, 1841 Isaac Andrew, agricultural labourer, aged 25, was married to Mary, aged 35. They were living at Stockland, West Down. Stockland has not been found on any maps.

In April, 1851 Isace Andrews (sic), 35, and Mary P, 45, were living at Bradiford, Pilton, near Barnstaple. Isaac, born in Frithelstock, was the farmer of 10 acres. Mary was born in West Down. No children were recorded at either census. Isaac’s father was living in the same building, but not as part of Isaac’s household (see Section Two).

By 1861 Isaac was living with his brother, William. Isaac is described as a retired farmer and as married (rather than widowed) even though Mary is not living with them on the census night. The Mary Ann Andrew who died 1857 in the Bideford registration area may have been the wife of Isaac.

Isaac was baptized 4 AUG 1816 in Frithelstock and died in the 1860s.

**PAGE 2**

In April 1851 William Andrews (sic), 45 and Mary, 29, were living at Fullbrook (sic) Barton with their children and six farm servants and two house servants. The farm covered 400 acres. This was a large acreage for a Devon Farm.
Although the farm, Fullabrook Barton, was quite close to West Down and within easy access to that town, ecclesiastically and politically the farm was near the northern boundary of the district of Braunton. It is important to remember this when searching for information about Fullabrook Barton and the people who lived there.

All the children were born in the Braunton area except William (Bale) who was born in Monkleigh. It is not possible to deduce from these places of birth whether the family also lived in the district or whether Mary went home to George Ham (Georgeham) for the births. It does suggest, however, that William, senior, was farming in the Monkleigh district in the mid-1830s.
By 1861 William Andrews (sic), now 54, was farming at Maddocks Down Farm, variously spelt Mattocks (sic) (1861) and Mattix (sic) (1871). It was a farm of 200 acres in size and so half the acreage of Fullabrook Barton. William employed only two farm servants as his children now undertook some of the household and farming duties.
In 1861 William’s brother, Isaac, was also living with him at Maddocks Down Farm.

MADDOCKS DOWN is located on a hill several miles west of Kentisbury, but ecclesiastically and politically it is included as part of East Down, to the south and further from Maddocks Down than Kentisbury. The reason for this is that Maddocks Down is more readily accessible to East Down than to Kentisbury.

The 1871 census states that William was now employing eleven men and three boys as well as a house maid. Mary was not at home on the census night; she was visiting her sister, Eliza Hancock.

William was born about 1807 in Frithelstock. There is no baptismal record for him in either Frithelstock or in Little Torrington nor found in the International Genealogical Index (IGI). William died 11 SEP 1878 at Woolfardisworthy (Woolsery).

More information about William Andrew and his children and grandchildren of is found in CHAPTER TWO, [p4].

**PAGE 3**

SECTION TWO: JOHN AND SARAH ANDREW

JOHN AND SARAH ANDREW

John was born about 1765 and died 3 JUL 1851, aged 86 years, at Pilton, near Braunton at the house of his son, Isaac who was the witness to his death [DC]. Sarah was born about 1768 and died 1 AUG 1848, aged 80 years, at Pilton, near Braunton at the house of her son, Isaac. Isaac’s wife, Mary, was the witness to her death [DC]. Both were buried in Little Torrington.

At the time of the 1841 CENSUS John and Sarah were living at Fulbrook (sic), West Down. This truncated spelling of Fullabrook is also found on a map from about the 1840s, but the full spelling is used on the 1831 ordnance map of the area.

The ages provided on the census form show that Sarah was younger than John.
John’s age is given as 75, indicating that he was 75-79 years old (born 1761-1765). Sarah’s age was given as 70 indicating that she was 70-74 years old (born 1766-1770). Sarah’s maiden name is uncertain, as are the date and place of their marriage. She is definitely not the Sarah Seargent, suggested elsewhere, who was older than John. This fact is corroborated by the information provided on their death certificates.

Living and working with John and Sarah in 1841 were three younger members of the Andrew family: ANN, 25, (born 1811-1816), PHILIP 20, (born 1816-1820) and JOHN 15 (born 1821-1826), possibly grandchildren. Speculating, these three young members of the Andrew family may have been the children of John who died in 1833 and that now they were helping their elderly grandparents to run their farm.
None of these three young people have been found for certain in the subsequent census records. Ann probably married, but there are too many possible marriages to enable her to be traced further. The same applies to John. A John Andrew married in the Torrington district in 1843; and in the Barnstaple area in 1846. There are also many possible marriages for a John Andrews.
A Philip Andrew married in 1849 in the Barnstaple registration district.

In 1851 the widowed John Andrews (sic), 85, was living in the same dwelling as Isaac but as a separate household with his own female house servant. John appears to have been born in 1765 or 1766. He was born in Little Torrington. He may be the John Andrew baptized in Little Torrington 30 August 1767, but this is very uncertain and constantly disagrees with all other extant records relating to the known John Andrew.

**PAGE 4**
It is thought that John and Sarah had another two sons, Philip and Samuel, born in Little Torrington.
The 1841 census record shows PHILIP ANDREW, 40, farmer and his wife, Elizabeth, 40, living in Pilton Street, Pilton, Barnstaple. In 1840 in the Torrington registration district a Philip Andrew married Elizabeth Davey.
Also living in the house were SAMUEL ANDREW, 35, no occupation shown, an older woman, a 15 year old agricultural apprentice and three female servants.
No further census records of Philip or Samuel have been found.
A Philip Andrew died in the Barnstaple registration district (which covers Braunton and West Down) in 1846.
A Samuel Andrews died in 1846 and one died in 1881, both in the Torrington district.

I have great difficulty in reconciling what Ervin Simpson has surmised about the family as shown in SECTION FOUR with the information given in the census records. The 1841 census indicates the Sarah was younger that John and not older as claimed by Ervin.
It is quite possible that Sarah was not Sarah Seargent and that she married John prior to 1796, the year of birth of John, junior.

**PAGE 5**

CHAPTER TWO: THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM ANDREW

William is the first confirmed member of the Andrew family. His parents, John and Sarah, are known, but some doubt exists about the exact identity of his parents. Reasons for this doubt are given elsewhere. There appears to be more than one couple named John and Sarah Andrew/s.

G4 WILLIAM ANDREW (1806/7 to 10 AUG 1878) was born in Frithelstock and died in Woolfardisworthy (Woolsery). He married 1) 22 JAN 1834 in Georgeham ANN BALE (1811 to 1 DEC 1841). He married 2) 25 July 1843 in Plymouth MARY BALE (1822/3 to 17 FEB 1893). Ann and Mary were sisters. In this historical period it was actually illegal for a man to marry the sister of his deceased wife, hence the need for the second marriage in Plymouth at some distance from Barnstaple.
A family Bible states that William was born in February 1807.
Ann was baptized 27 OCT 1811 in Combe Martin. An extended Bale family lived in the Combe Martin region of Devon. She died at Knightacott, Fremington. Fremington lies 3 miles west of Barnstaple.
Mary was baptized 6 January 1823 in Georgeham, north of Braunton, Devon, the child of GABRIEL BALE and MARY BRAYLEY.
Census records for Gabriel Bale exist for 1841, 1851 and 1861 [p17].

William and Ann had three CHILDREN: *Mary, *William Bale [p8] and John (1839 to 1848).
William and Mary had ten CHILDREN: Ann (1844 to 1844), Sarah (1846 to 15-8-1852), *Harriet, *Philip [p6], *Selina [p6], *Isaac John [p6], *Joseph Frederick [p7], *Alfred George [p7], *Archibald [p7] and *Arthur James [p7].

G5 MARY ANDREW (1834-1909) married JOHN JOSLIN (1826-1896) in the spring of 1854 near Barnstaple.
The 1871 census simply shows the address of the family as Beer Charter, Braunton.
They were still living at the 1871 address at the time of the 1881 census. Jane and Mary were not living with the family on that night: they were probably married.
In 1891 John, Mary and their son, Samuel, lived in Witney, Handborough, Oxfordshire (see census record).
At least seven CHILDREN of Mary and John are known: John (1856-?), Jane (1858-?), Mary (1860-?), William (1861-?), Sarah (1863-?), Thomas (1870-1876), (all shown on the 1871 census), and Samuel (1871-?).
The large gap in the children’s ages suggests that there may have been more children born during the period 1864-1869, but who died.

G5 WILLIAM BALE ANDREW (1836-1916): see CHAPTER THREE [p8] below.

G5 HARRIET ANDREW (22 OCT 1847-?).married THOMAS CLARK (c1850-?). in the summer of 1871, near Barnstaple. Thomas was a farmer.
In 1881 the family lived at Ruggaton Farm, Berrynarbour, Devon. Their five children had been born in Instow.
By 1891 the family had moved to Manor Farm, Shapwick, near Bridgwater, Somerset. Emily was born in Berrynarbour.
In 1901 the family worked on Heath Farm at Sibford Gower, Banbury, Oxfordshire. Maud and Louise had been born in Shapwick.
Harriet and Thomas had eight children: Thomas, Harriett, Alfred W, Sidney J, Florence M, Emily E, Maude M and Louise E.

**PAGE 6**

G5 PHILIP ANDREW [15 JAN 1850-?] married SUSAN TOMS in the winter of 1873 near Barnstaple.
Their children were: Mabel [1874-?], Frances [1877-?], Philip [1878-?], Archibella (1879-?), Maud [1881-?], Lilian [1884], Randolph [1886], Violet [1887], Hilda,[1889] and Leonard (1890-?).
In 1881 Phillip and his family lived at Maddox Down, East Down. By 1891 they had moved to Fullabrook Barton, Braunton (but close to West Down).
They were living at 36 Floyer Rd, Aston, Birmingham in 1901. The children still living at home were Frances, Maud, (both draper’s assistant), Lilian (tailoress), Randolph, (railway servant-porter), Violet (draper’s apprentice), Hilda and Leonard.
Archibella married in the Spring of 1899 in Aston, Birmingham. Her husband was either John Jeffs or John William Usher.

G5 SELINA ANDREW [31 JAN 1852-?] married DANIEL ANDREW [c1850-1880, aged 30 years] in the autumn of 1873 near Torrington.
Selina and Daniel had four children: Alice Mary, [1874-?], William Heyman [1876-?], Edith Harriet [1879-?] and Selina (1880-?).
On the 1881 census the widowed Selina (farmeress) is living with her children William H, Edith and Selina at Thornland Farm, Berrynabor, Devon. Her eldest child, Alice, was absent from home on that night. Also on the farm are her widowed mother and brothers, Archibald and Arthur John, who were visiting on the census night.
By 1891 Selina was running a lodging house at 13 Church St, ILFRACONBE, Devon. [The difference between a lodging house and a boarding house is that no meals are provided for a lodger, but meals are provided for a boarder.] William is no longer living with the family. No death or marriage of William has been found.
In 1901Selina was still running the same lodging house with the help of Edith and Selina. No marriage or death of Selina has been found.
Alice married in 1897 William Alexander CROWHURST; Edith married in 1903.

G5 ISAAC “JOHN” ANDREW [12 AUG1854-1908, Lewisham, London] married 1) SARAH “LUCY” DARCH (1852-1893) in the spring of 1876 near Barnstaple. He married 2) EMILY PETHRICK in in the spring of 1894.
On the 1881 census Isaac, farmer, is living at Winscott Barton, Alvington, Devon with his wife and two children, William J (4y) and Rhoda L (7mo). A daughter, Gertrude, was away from home on that night.
By 1891 Isaac was farming Mattox Down, East Down, which had been farmed by his brother, Philip, in 1881. His children are listed as William J (14), Gertrude L (12), Rhoda L (10), Edith M (9), Beatrice D (8) and Charles D (4).
In 1901 Philip, his second wife and new family were living at The Manor Farm, Combe Hay, North Devon. His children were listed as Charles (15), driver of a milk cart, Olive May (4), Alfred C (3) Ivy Irene (1) and Hilda E (4mo).

**PAGE 7**
G5 JOSEPH FREDERICK ANDREW [25 MAR 1856-1910, Whitechapel, London] married EVA CHUBB in the winter of 1880 near Launceston.

G5 ALFRED GEORGE ANDREW [1 APR 1858-?] married MARY PYM in the winter of 1878 near Bideford.

G5 ARCHIBALD ANDREW [31 DEC 1859-1916, Hammersmith, London (?)] married RHODA ANNIE SKEET in the spring of 1882 near Barnstaple. A Rhoda A Andrew died in 1931 in Romford aged 73 years.

G5 ARTHUR JAMES ANDREW [15 JUN 1862-?] married CAROLINE DENDLE in the winter of 1885 near Barnstaple.

Most of Williams’ children have been found on the 1891 census, but not on the 1881 census. It is possible that the records for their district no longer exist.

Some family oral history states that one of William Bale Andrew’s half-siblings also came to New Zealand. No suitable person has been found so far as a settler. However it is possible that William was visited by one or more of his English relatives.

**PAGE 8**

CHAPTER THREE: THE NEW ZEALAND ANDREW FAMILY

William Bale Andrew (21 or 31 May 1836, North Barnstaple to 26 July, 1916, Springston, Lincoln, New Zealand) married on 6 February 1863 in New Zealand Mary Ann Batt (1 JAN 1845 to13 APR 1927).

When William arrived in Lyttleton, New Zealand, as a young man (probably in the mid-to-late 1850s) he became a drover in the South Island. Eventually he was droving in the district around Nelson. Here he met and married Mary Batt.

THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM AND MARY ANDREW
After their marriage William and Mary drove by horse and dray to Greenpark, near Lake Ellesmere, about 32 Km (20 miles) south of Christchurch (see maps and atlases and also the internet). Here William farmed a swampy area named “Park Farm”. Initially he built a small house from swamp sods to which he continued to add rooms for his enlarging family until it reputedly had eleven rooms. About 1886 this house of sod construction was replaced by a wooden house which remained standing well into the 1960s and may even still be in existence.

William and Mary had thirteen children: Arthur William, Phillip John; William Bale, Mary, Frederick James, Caroline, Selina [JAN 1873-27 JUL 1875]; *Isaac, George Henry, John [3 MAY 1879-4 JUL 1879]; Samuel [p15], Charles and Alice.

SECTION ONE: THE FAMILY OF ISAAC ANDREW

G6 ISAAC ANDREW [30 OCT 1875-20 NOV 1949]
Isaac married EDITH ALICE COX [p23] on 13 APR 1905. Edith [3 OCT 1877-14 NOV 1947] was the sister of Lydia who married Samuel Andrew [p13].
Isaac bred prize-winning merino sheep on his properties at Ellesmere and then at Waihoa Downs on the South Island. A few of many references to Isaac Andrew in New Zealand newspapers are given below.

He also became a sheep judge at Sheep Shows, including in Argentina. Below is one of a number of similar references to Isaac Andrew as a sheep judge.

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=EP19331107.2.152&srpos=19&e=-------50--1----0isaac+andrew--

The early 1930s depression had a major effect on wool production as no one could afford to purchase wool, especially expensive, high-quality wool. Isaac could no longer afford the up-keep of his farm at Waihoa Downs and so he lost his occupation and farm. He worked briefly at Ilam, a property in Christchurch before moving to Palmerston North. Here he taught wool-classing at the Massey Agricultural College in Palmerston North, now Massey University, on the North Island. He later moved to a farm, Eccleston, near Marton. After his retirement he moved to a property at Governors Bay, near Christchurch.

Isaac and Edith had six children: *Leicester Selwyn, *Everard George [p8], Enid Merle [p8], Stella Esmee [p9], Geoffrey Charles [p9] and Neville Halsey [p9].

G7 LEICESTER SELWYN ANDREW

Leicester [14 FEB 1907-2 SEP 1987], an accountant, was born in Ellesmere and died in Palmerston North. He married MARGARET FOWLER GODFREY on Wednesday 8 APR 1936. They were married in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Palmerston North. Their wedding was arranged for just before Easter so that Leicester would have a few days off work for a brief honeymoon. In 1936 Good Friday was on April 10.
Margaret, “Pegs”, [8 JUN 1909-24 JUL 1992] was the daughter of William Fowler Godfrey, medical practitioner, and Alison (Alice) Isabella Knox Wightman. Margaret was born in Carberry, Canada.

Leicester worked at the Longburn Freezing Works, a meat-exporting firm. He had become the Head Accountant before he retired. His numerous hobbies included stamp collecting, photography, and listening to classical music. He had a large record collection. Leicester was also a keen and expert gardener who grew most the family’s vegetables. He was also a flower breeder, especially of polyanthus which he painstakingly cross-pollinated by hand in attempts to achieve the effects he desired in his flowers. It was quite apparent that he had come from a farming background.

Leicester and Margaret had three children.
Alan married Phillipa in the Congregational Church, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, NSW, Australia. They had met as post-graduate students at the Australian National University, Canberra, ACT. Both became tertiary lecturers after their marriage. They had two children, Rosalie and Lachlan, and two grandchildren, Ronald and Candace.
Ian married Shirley. They had two sons, Paul and Robert and one grandson, Duncan.
Alison “Lis” married John, but was later divorced. They had two children, Lucy and Alan, and two adopted children, David and Andrew. Andrew [4 SEP 1970-2 APR 1978] died in an accident when he was seven years old. David has several children.

**PAGE 10**

G7 EVERARD GEORGE ANDREW

Everard [9 NOV 1909-25 JAN 1975], a pharmacist, married Margery Edith Black [1 JAN 1913-2008]. Margery was born in Nelson.
The family lived in Christchurch. They had three children.
Helen married Guy with whom she had two children, Matthew and Andrew.
John married Patricia with whom he had two children, Christopher and Jonathan.
Elizabeth married Ian with whom she had two children, Dougal and Jennifer.

G7 EDITH “MERLE” ANDREW

Merle [4 SEP 1912 (or 4 FEB 1911)-21 JUL 1971] married in the 1930s BERNARD “Ben” ALEXANDER MAIR [10 MAY 1909-23 JUN 2005]. Lillian [1909-?] married ERVIN P Y SIMPSON [?-?], Baptist minister.
No records of the deaths of Lillian or of Ervin, or of Ervin’s birth, have been found in New Zealand or English records. This suggests that they may have died in the United States of America, but there are too many possibilities on these lists to identify them. They probably married in New Zealand. Eventually this marriage certificate containing useful information should become available.
Ervin, who had an M.A. as well as other degrees, was a New Zealand Fulbright Scholar in 1949.

http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-DruFulb-_div2-N14790.html

Ervin became a Professor at the Berkeley Baptist Divinity School. He published a book in 1983:”A History of Adlerson-Broaddus College 1812-1951.-see internet. Ervin became interested in family history. He did extensive research in England which he typed up and distributed to the various family members. His notes have been a useful guide for this family history.

[NOTE; Ervin P Y Simpson is not to be confused with John “Ewen” Simpson [13 FEB 1906-1992], also a Baptist minister, and well-known broadcaster and Rotarian. Ewen was the son of Thomas and Clare Floss. It has been suggested that the two Baptist ministers were related in some way, but no link has been found to date.
Ewen was a Rotarian. A Rotarian Club in Napier was named after him [I].
There are many references on the internet to the Baptist minister, Rev J Ewen Simpson, including:

Charles married ALICE CAMPBELL GUY [29 AUG 1888-6 SEP 1978] in 1915 (NZ Registry of births, deaths and marriages). Alice was the daughter of William John and Alice. (One family record has Alice named as Alice Guypbell Campbell (sic)).
Charles died in WWI. He was listed as “missing, presumed dead”.
Alice, known as “Aunt Daisy” lived in Yaldhurst. There were no children from the marriage.

G6 ALICE ANDREW [30 MAY 1884-28 OCT 1957]

CHAPTER FOUR: ONE SUGGESTED VERY EARLY ANDREW FAMILY HISTORY

In the 1960s Ervin Simpson visited Devon to search the records. He writes about the family that the first definite record is “a marriage at the parish church at Parkham, Devon on April 1, 1719”. This was the MARRIAGE of LAWRENCE ANDREW to PHILIPPA BOWMAN. “Lawrence died on July 10, 1763, and Philippa died on June 13, 1766, and both were buried at LITTLE TORRINGTON (7 miles ESE from Parkham, over hilly land; and only 3 miles by direct road from Buckland Brewer).”
I am less convinced that this is the first definite record for the family being considered, for reasons to be discussed later.
The 1831 ordnance maps of England (2 or 3 miles to 1 inch) show well the geography of this district and of the other districts where the family lived.
Ervin continues:
“Parish records refer to three children of Lawrence and Philippa Andrew. (Actually the records are for the children of Laurence Andrew.) These three CHILDREN are JANE (baptized 2 JUL 1729 at Buckland Brewer), *PHILIP and JOHN who is known from his death “on January 18, 1742……No other records have been found of any other children of Lawrence and Philippa”.
The gap of ten years between their marriage and the baptism of their first known child suggests that there may have been other children whose details no longer exist or are to be found in other parish records.
The records of the church at Buckland Brewer go back to the early 1600s and are readily available until about 1837. They reveal that at least three different families named Andrew lived in the area, and all in the same period from about 1720 to 1740. The 19 marriages recorded in the church records cover a much wider time span than the baptisms.

G2 PHILIP ANDREW, farmer
Philip was baptized 29 SEP 1732 at Buckland Brewer. He “married, by license, Elizabeth Doble” (Elizth on the actual record) “of Little Torrington, at Little Torrington, on November 28, 1765. Philip is described as “yeoman”. This means that he was a man who owned and farmed his own land.”
There are too many baptisms of an Elizabeth Doble (or equivalent variations) for the period 1715 to 1750 (actually 1729-1744) to determine Elizabeth’s age and parents without more details from elsewhere.
Ervin visited Little Torrington and wrote:
“Elizabeth died on November 8 1792, and Philip on April 27 1806. They were buried in the Little Torrington churchyard, and their slate tombstone still stands and is fully legible.” This visit was in the middle 1960s. Death duty lists confirm the death of Philip.

NOTE: All burials in Little Torrington graveyard have been found by Ewen, to whom I am very grateful. I have been unable to verify any of them.

Only two CHILDREN of Philip and Elizabeth have been found. *John and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was baptised 10 FEB 1774 at Little Torrington. She married WILLIAM CHAPPLE at Little Torrington on 29 MAR 1795. Nothing more is known of this family.

**PAGE 18**

G3 JOHN ANDREW
John was baptized 30 AUG 1767 at Little Torrington. Ervin found a marriage of John to Sarah Seargent (sic) on 28 JAN 1796 at Great Torrington, after banns. He speculated that she may have been the Sarah Sergeant baptized about 3 JUN 1767 in Little Torrington, the daughter of Alexander (Alexr). It is very relevant that this Sarah Seargent was older then John, as shall be discussed when considering census records. John and Sarah would have both been 28 years old when they married, if this is the correct Sarah Sargeant.
At least seven girls names Sarah Sargent, or similar, were baptized in the period 1762 to 1782.
More evidence is required before it can be confirmed that this was the marriage of John, son of Philip. There were many people named John Andrew living in Devon.

Five CHILDREN were baptized in Little Torrington and can be confirmed as the children of couples named John and Sarah Andrew. These children are:
JOHN, born soon after his parents’ marriage, was baptized 13 APR 1796. He died 7 DEC 1832 aged 36 years and is buried at Little Torrington;
BETTY, baptized 9 JUL 1797;
*PHILIP, baptized 1 MAY 1798;
*SAMUEL, baptized 10 DEC 1801; and
SALLEY, baptized 23 APR 1804, died 26 APR 1804 and buried in the local churchyard.
All of these baptismal records are available on the internet. Census records suggest that Philip and Samuel were the brothers of William and Isaac, and that John may have been.

However, when these baptisms, quite close in time, are considered thoughtfully it seems possible that there were actually two couples named John and Sarah Andrew living in or near Little Torrington and having children at about the same time. It is believable that the couple married in 1796 were not actually the parents of John, but a couple married earlier than 1796. Further evidence for two couples with the same name and living in the same area can also be found, including in the census records.

Ewan also found in records of the Frithelstock church a number of baptisms of children born to John and Sarah. There are other difficulties, mentioned below, in trying to link all of these children to the family being traced.
SALLEY ANN, was baptized 19 JUL 1805, died 9 JUL 1833 and was buried at Little Torrington.
*WILLIAM was born in Frithelstock in 1806/7 according to census records, but no baptismal record for him has been found. William is the first member of the family to be known for certain.
GEORGE baptized 28 DEC, 1809. Nothing more is known about this George Andrew. He does not appear on any census records.
This George, born to John and Sarah in Frithlestock, is not to be confused with the George born about the same time (in Little Torrington) and died in 1886, also the son of Sarah, (see further notes provided below).
HARRIET was baptized 27 JUN 1812, died 22 AUG 1812 and buried in Little Torrington.
JAMES was baptized 15 NOV 1813. Nothing more is known of James. He does not appear on any census records, so, presumably, he died quite young.
*ISAAC was baptized 4 AUG 1816. He is definitely the brother of William.

If these children were the children of Sarah Sergeant, born 1767, then she would have been aged 38, 39, 42, almost 45, 46 and 49 when the children were born. This is most unlikely. I suspect that either her date of birth is incorrect, or that the wrong marriage partner has been linked to the family line, or that some of the children listed for the family line are incorrect.

**PAGE 19**

CHAPTER FIVE: THE FAMILY OF GABRIEL BALE

GABRIEL BALE
Gabriel Bale, the son of Hugh Bale and Mary Ridmore, was baptized 1 OCT 1781 in Morthoe (Mortehoe), Devon. Mortehoe is a large area with a few scattered dwellings about 5 miles WSW of Ilfracombe and NW of West Down.
Neither the marriage of Hugh, nor his baptism, has been found. The only baptism of a Hugh Bale on the IGI occurred at the end of 1766 and so is unlikely to be the Hugh Bale of interest here. There are two possible births of a Mary Ridmore on the IGI, both baptized at Berrynarbor: Mary baptized 21 AUG 1757, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth, or Mary baptized 18 SEP 1763, the daughter of Nicholas and Catharine.

Gabriel’s first marriage was to Mary BRAYLEY on 10 NOV 1808 in Georgeham. Mary (c1789-1842) was buried 12 FEB 1842, aged 53 years. He remarried in 1856 Anne REDMORE. Gabriel died 23 SEP 1866. He left his estate to his wife, Anne.

The children of Gabriel and Mary include: George baptised 5 AUG 1810 (married 29 JAN 1834 Grace Badcock), Ann (married William Andrew) [p4], Eliza baptized 7 AUG 1814 (married 1 MAR 1841 John Hancock), John baptized 10 JUL 1820 and Mary (married William Andrew) [p4].

The children of Gabriel and Ann are Nicholas and Marena.

In 1841 Gabriel, 53 (sic), farmer, lived at Buckland, near Georgeham, with Mary, 50.
By 1851 Gabriel, 62, had retired. His birthplace is stated as West Down. Living with him was his grandson, John Bale, aged 14 who was born at Monkleigh. John was still at school. Anne Redmore, 23, was Gabriel’s general servant and Nicholas Redmore, aged 10 (sic), was described as a visitor.
The 1861 census names Gabriel, aged 78, Ann, 32, a son, Nicholas, aged 11 and a daughter, Marina, aged 4. Gabriel was born in Morthoe, while the other occupants of his household were born in Georgeham. Nicholas appears to be a son of Anne and Gabriel out of wedlock. Nicholas Bale Redmore Redmore was born at the beginning of 1850.

CHAPTER SIX: THE FAMILY OF JOHN AND ANN BATT

G1 JOHN BATT
Mary Batt [p-] was the daughter of John Batt who, with his young wife, Ann (nee Anthony), sailed from Gravesend, near London, on the ship Olympus in June 1842. At the time John was 26 and his wife was 20. A family Bible states that John was born 8 NOV 1815, that Ann was born 4 FEB 1821 and that they married 12 MAR 1842. The civil record for this marriage, if there were one, has not survived. John died 19 APR 1885 in Wakefield. Ann Batt died 1APR 1916, aged 95 years, and was buried in the Foxhill Cemetery.
Note: The maiden name of Ann is given in kkk. The death certificate of their son, Harry Batt, states that his mother’s maiden name was Barratt.
After arriving in New Zealand they settled at Foxhill, near Wakefield, Nelson.

John and Ann had eleven living children: Mary Ann (1 JAN 1845: see Division Three), Elfrida (Freda) [21 FEB 1847-1926]-did not marry, *Harry, unnamed registered1849 40, *John [16 JAN 1851-1926], *Emma and (Ena) [27 SEP 1852-?], George [4 JUN 1854-?-see below], William [13 APR 1856-?], Ellen [4 DEC 1857-?], Arthur James [19 AUG 1859-1929], Laura [19 FEB 1862-?] and Alfred [22 May 1865-22 DEC 1946]-did not marry.
There are no birth registrations on the index for Mary Ann and Elfrida/Freda. Harry, John, Emma and George are listed as “Unnamed”. George (?Charles George d 1929 aged 75)-no marriage or children found-is still unidentified. All eleven children were alive when Ann died in 1916.

THE CHILDREN AND KNOWN GRANDCHILDREN OF JOHN AND ANN BATT

**PAGE 21**

G2 MARY ANN BATT married in 1863 WILLIAM BALE ANDREW [p-].
No name for the groom is shown on the marriage index.
No record of a marriage for FREDA BATT has been found.

G2 HARRY BATT [20 FEB 1849-1 OCT 1929]

The marriage of Harry Batt to Mary Ann Newbery [c1850-1930] has not been found on the Marriage Register. His death certificate indicates that they were married about 1877 in Nelson. Harry was 28 years old when he married. This information appears to be incorrect given the year-of-birth of Edward Lewis Batt. Also, the birth of one of his ten children has not been found on the Birth Register, either. From the details given on Harry’s death certificate this child was born in 1884 between Francis and Ethel.
This absence of records suggests that some early vital records are now missing. However, the births (and marriages) of nine children appear on the register.
At the time of his death Harry, a fruit farmer, lived at St Aubyn (?) St, HASTINGS. He was buried 3 OCT 1929 in the Havelock Worth Cemetery.
The known children of Harry and Mary Ann are: Edward Lewis, Herbert Harry, Alfred Ernest, Walter Leslie James, Francis William, Ethel Maud, Hedley Gordon, Arthur Ashton Garfield and his twin, Albert Stanley Maston.

….G3 EDWARD LEWIS BATT [1876-?] married Alice Edith Manson [c1875-1938] in 1903.
Their children include: Norman Lewis [18 AUG 1904-1977] (married Eileen Marjorie Hassell [1911-1951] in 1928), Gordon Harris [5 SEP 1905-1972], Nelson Victor [1907-1961] and Kenneth Harry [17 FEB 1909-1999].
An Alfred Lewis Batt was born 7 FEB 1922 and died in 1987. More details about his parents, wife and children would be on his marriage certificate.
Edward predeceased his father according to the details given for living issue on his father’s death certificate.

….G3 HERBERT HARRY BATT [1877-1927]

….G3 ALFRED ERNEST BATT [1879-1921] married KATE ISABEL LINES [c1883-1932] in 1904.

….G3 WALTER LESLIE JAMES BATT [1880-1951] married 1) EUNICE MAY WATERHOUSE [c1889-1911] in 1909, married 2) MAUD(E) ROWENA HYLAND [c1891-1970] in 1912.

….G3 FRANCIS WILLIAM BATT [1883-1949]

….G3 ETHEL MAUD BATT [18 JAN 1885-1972] married WILLIAM BURTON FAULDING [1885-1965] in 1907.

….G3 HEDLEY GORDON BATT [1887-1940] married ROYAL LOUISA BUND [c 1891-1960] in 1910.

….G3 ARTHUR ASHTON GARFIELD BATT [1891-?]

….G3 ALBERT STANLEY MASTON BATT [1891-1958]

**PAGE 22**

G2 JOHN BATT
John [16 JAN 1851-2 JUN 1926], labourer, did not marry. John died in hospital in Raetihi, but was from Ohakune. He was buried in Ohakune Cemetery on 4 JUN 1926 according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church.

G2 EMMA [Ena] BATT
Emma [27 SEP 1852-1929] married John Henry William Gerken in 1878. (A John Henry Herman (sic?) Gerken died in 1908 aged 47 years. This may refer to the husband of Emma.)

Emma and John had six children: William Henry John [1879-1905]; Lillian Frances Emma [1880-?] (married Henry Elliott Aubrey Cameron in 1904); Alfreda Mabel Emily [1882-?]; George Anthony Herbert [1884-1897]; Frederick Albert Leslie [1887-?] and
*Rosina Muriel Pearl Gerken [1890-1930].

….G3 ROSINA MURIEL PEARL GERKEN
Rosina [1890-21 OCT 1930] married DAVID KENNEDY FISHER [c1884-1948] in 1922 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. They had four children, three daughters and then a son.
At the time of her death the family lived in Paeroa, but Rosina died in hospital at Kihikihi.

G2 WILLIAM BATT [13 APR 1856-1924(?)].
Registry records show three grooms named William Batt in the period to 1890, when William, son of John and Mary would have been about 34 years old. William is known to have had five children.
Also considering the birth records for the children of William Batt, the most likely marriage appears to be that of William Batt to Mary Sophia Hunt [1868-1936] in 1887.

The five known children of William and Mary Sophia are: Ruby Maude [1888-?], Ronald Claude [1891-1969], Douglas William [1895-1966] (married 1924 Phyllis Marion Hawkes [c1896-1971]), Thelma Therese [1898-1971] (married 1922 Alfred William Pinckney [27 JUN 1896-1982]), Stephen Carl [16 APR 1902-1981] and Richard Warmington [1908-1925].

**PAGE 23**

Richard was baptized 19 MAR 1820. He married MARY TURLAND in FEB 1848.
Charles was baptised 22 OCT 1822. William was baptised 3 JAN 1825 and died on the same day, aged 5 days.

G2 JOSEPH COX [1816-1892], dairyman, grocer/cheesemonger
Joseph was born in 1816 in Faxton, Northamptonshire, although his age shown on the census records varies between 1814 [1861 census] and 1817 [1871census]. He was baptized with his twin brother, George on 3 JAN 1817. Joseph died in the 1890s.

One researcher says that she was born 14 DEC 1823 in Middleton, Northamptonshire and baptized 21 SEP 1828 in Cottingham, Northamptonshire. I have not found these records. I have found John and Ann Craxford living in Leicester, Leicestershire in 1822 and in 1826, however, when and where their sons, George and David (respectively) were born. They also had a son [1828] and a daughter, Elizabeth [1829], in Middleton, Cottingham, Northamptonshire [FamilySearch].

The Craxford family history is on the internet:

G3 MARY ANN COX
More information about Mary [1862-?] is required before her marriage can be determined. There are too many marriages of people with this name to be able to estimate a most likely marriage.

DIVISION TWO: THE GODFREY, FOWLER AND WIGHTMAN FAMILIES AND ASSOCIATED FAMILIES FROM SCOTLAND, CANADA AND NEW ZEALAND

INTRODUCTION

MARGARET FOWLER GODFREY

Margaret, “Pegs”, [8 JUN 1909-24 JUL 1992], English teacher, was the daughter of William Fowler Godfrey, medical practitioner, and Alison (Alice) Isabella Knox Wightman. William and Alison were cousins: their mothers were sisters. Mary Fowler married into the Godfrey family, while Margaret Fowler married into the Wightman family.

Margaret Godfrey married LEICESTER SELWYN ANDREW on 8 APR 1936. They were married in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Palmerston North.
Leicester, [14 FEB 1907-2 SEP 1987], an accountant, was born in Ellesmere and died in Palmerston North [p-]. The Andrew family and its many associated families are described in Division One [p-].

This Division of the family history had been divided into three Sub-divisions, one for the Godfrey line, one for the Wightman line and one for the extensive Fowler and line and its associated branches. Most of this information has been collected by various members of the family to whom I am very grateful, especially the late Jane Godfrey. The information has been checked wherever possible. Extra information has also been added, or corrections made, if these were found or were possible and denoted [FS] for FamilySearch: http://www.familysearch.org.

LOCATION OF PLACES IN EAST LOTHIAN

Most of the families mentioned in this division, particularly those associated with the Fowler family, lived and worked in East Lothian. East Lothian is a Scottish county just east of Edinburgh, Midlothian, on the Firth of Forth. Most of the places mentioned in the text may be found on readily available maps. The Parish of Gladsmuir, about 18km east of central Edinburgh, includes Gladsmuir and the villages of Samuelson and Penston. Gladsmuir exists for about 4km along the northern boundary of the A199 road. The A1 road runs north of Gladmuir, between Gladsmuir and Elvingston which is about 1.5km north of Gladsmuir. Merryhattan no longer appears to exist except as a garden centre. Other places mentioned in the text lie east and north east of Gladsmuir. Information about the histories and industries of these towns and parishes is easily obtained from the internet.

**PAGE 29**

SUB-DIVISION ONE: THE GODFREY FAMILY

CHAPTER EIGHT: THE GODFREY BRANCH AND ASSOCIATED FAMILIES

SECTION ONE: THE FIRST THREE GENERATIONS OF THE GODFREY FAMILY

G1 WILLIAM GODFREY

William is said to have been born about 1749 in Weaver. No such place has been located in Scotland. Perhaps “weaver” is a reference to his occupation or to that of his father. He died in October 1826 at Plowlands, Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Greenlaw is now a village in the county named Borders. Further information on the village of Greenlaw of interest to family historians may found on the internet, including the website:

https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Greenlaw,_Berwickshire,_Scotland

William married ALISON KINGHORN, the daughter of Thomas Kinghorn. Alison had a brother, William.

William and Alison had seven children: John [24 MAR 1774-?], *Thomas, Alison [25 JAN 1778-?: (pre 1784)], (both born in Whitsome, Berwick, on the English/Scottish border), William [25 MAR 1782-5 MAR 1866, Edenmouth (near Kelso)], Alison[1 MAR 1784-?], Isabel [2 JUN 1786-7 JAN 1870, Smailholm, Roxburghshire] and Helen [4 MAR 1788-?]. The last five births were in Swinton & Simprin, Berwick.

Information on Whitsome and on Swinton & Simprin, Berwick, Scotland, may be found on various websites including:

https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=whitsome+berwickshire&aq=5&aqi=g6&oq=whitsome&gs_rfai=

This site also has further information on family history research for the area.

**PAGE 30**

G2 THOMAS GODFREY

Thomas [7 JAN 1776-22 DEC 1855] was born in Berwickshire and died in Portobello, Edinburgh. Thomas married ELIZABETH HOGG, also known as Betty or Betsy, on 10 MAY 1799. Elizabeth was the daughter of Gavin Hog and Betty Thomson.

Thomas and Elizabeth had eight children: William [c1800-?], Gavin [c1802, Edinburgh-?], Thomas [28 MAR 1804, Barrowmite, Duns-?] John [14 APR 1806, Langton,-?], *Robert (see below-G3) Elizabeth [1810-?], Alison [c1812, Cockburnspath,-3 SEP 1884] and Isabella Grieve [c1817-6 SEP 1895].

G3 ROBERT GODFREY

Robert married LILIAS ALEXANDER on 22 JUL 1831 in Liberton, Midlothian.
Lilias [c1809, West Linton-22 FEB 1874, Edinburgh] was the daughter of John and Elizabeth White. West Linton was in Peebleshire.

Robert and Lilias had ten children: Thomas [bn 7 FEB 1833, bp 10 MAR 1833, Liberton-?], John [11 JUL 1834, Lasswade, Midlothian-?] Elizabeth (Liza) [1836, Lasswade-17 OCT 1858, Liberton], *Robert (see G4), James [bn 17 APR 1841, bp 4 MAY 1841, Lasswade,-1851(?)], Alexander Smellie (Sandy) [1842. Lasswade -] Gavin [c1846, Lasswade-?], Jane (Jeanie) [c1849, Lasswade-?], William [1852-?], Lilias [c1854, Lasswade-1857, Liberton].

Liberton, meaning “leper town” is about 4km SSE of the centre of Edinburgh. The old parish covered an area about 9km by 7km. Lasswade lies to the south-east of Liberton [I].

THE HOGG FAMILY

The name Hogg is spelt in a variety of ways in the records, including “Hoog” which may be a misinterpretation of Hogg in manuscripts now hard to read. The family may also have come to Scotland from Europe.

G1 WILLIAM HOOG
William married ELIZABETH DICKSON in 1708 in Bunkle and Preston, Berwickshire.
Four children are known, David [bp 17 FEB 1709-?], *Alexander [bp 9 SEP 1711], Elizabeth [bp 23 AUG 1713-?], Jean [bp 30 MAY 1714-?] and Elizabeth [bp 3 MAR 1717-?]. All the baptisms were in Bunkle and Preston.

G2 ALEXANDER HOGG

**PAGE 32**

G5 WILLIAM FOWLER GODFREY

William, medical practitioner, [23 MAY 1874-9 SEP 1945] married his cousin, ALISON “Alice” ISABELLA KNOX WIGHTMAN on 25 APR 1907. Alison [7 MAY 1880-5 NOV 1958] was the daughter of James Wightman and Margaret Fowler, the sister of William’s mother.

William and his new wife, Alice, left Scotland for Canada on 28 APR 1907 on the RMS “Virginian”. He practiced in Carberry, Manitoba, Canada, but found working in the very low winter temperatures difficult: temperatures as low as -40 degrees. William often travelled long distances in a horse and cart over deep snow to attend to his patients. Many patients were farmers who lived widely scattered across that section of Canada’s prairie lands. After nine years in this inhospitable climate (especially in that era) and the death of his young son William took his wife and two daughters to live at 121Grey Street, PALMERSTON NORTH, New Zealand. They left Canada on 20 DEC 1916 and reached Auckland on 7 JAN 1917 on board the RMS “Niagara”. Eventually another son was born to William and Alice in Palmerston North.

Robert and Alice had four children: Robert, Margaret Fowler [p7], Mary Fowler and James Knox Howieson.

Jim [13 SEP 1922-29 JAN 1981] married THELMA LOTTIE RENALL [18 APR 1913-18 FEB 1874] on 7 JUL 1951.

Jim was at university studying pharmacy when he developed severe juvenile diabetes. He could no longer continue his studies. Later he worked as a librarian. He was also a renown amateur entomologist.

James and Thelma had two daughters:
Isabella “Jane” [23 MAR 1954-17 MAR 2008]. Jane, a Latin teacher, did not marry.

G5 JACOB ALEXANDER GODFREY

Jacob, known as Alexander “Alec” Jacob, [JUN 1881-26 NOV 1965] was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and died in Victoria, BC, Canada. (One family record states that Alexander died on November 19, but the official record in British Columbia gives the date as November 26, aged 83.)
He married near or in Winnipeg, Canada, DAVINA MARION RENTON, on 03 AUG 1921 (Manitoba marriage records [I]). They separated very soon after the marriage and later divorced. On some records, possibly from oral history, Davina is called Vera. It is possible that she was actually known as Vina and that his name has been confused with and remembered as Vera. Other records show her as Euphemia (Vinnie) Renton.

Alec trained as an architect before he became a farmer in Canada. His occupation is also given as Contractor. He used his architectural skills to help various family members with the appropriate construction of buildings as they established themselves in Canada.

**PAGE 34**

G5 JAMES THEOPHILUS GODFREY

Jim, farmer, [6 JUN 1884-19 MAR 1980] married JANET SHANKLAND BROWN COLTART on 29 APR 1913 in Carberry, North Cypress, Manitoba, Canada.

Jim had been born in Scotland, then moved to eastern Canada. Eventually Jim and Janet left Manitoba for the much more hospitable climate of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Here Jim farmed for many years close to the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. A very large family of the descendants of Robert Godfrey now lives in this district. They have been visited many times by members of the New Zealand Godfrey family, amongst other relatives.

SUB-DIVISION TWO: THE FOWLER, BEGBIE, AND CURRIE FAMILIES

CHAPTER NINE: THE FOWLER, BEGBIE, CURRIE AND ASSOCIATED FAMILIES

SECTION ONE: THE FOWLER FAMILY

LOCATION OF PLACES IN EAST LOTHIAN

East Lothian is a Scottish county just east of Edinburgh, on the Firth of Forth. Most of the places mentioned in the text may be found on readily available maps. The Parish of Gladsmuir, about 18km east of central Edinburgh, includes Gladsmuir and the villages of Samuelson to the SSE and Penston.

G1 ROBERT FOWLER married JOANNA/JOAN MUIR on 11 OCT 1741 in North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland.
Six children are known from the marriage: Margaret [bp 13 MAR 1742, North Berwick-?], Alexander [15 MAY 1745, Prestonkirk-?], Helen [bn 13 JUN 1747, bp 21 JUN 1747, Prestonkirk-?], Robert [bn 16 MAY 1750, bp 20 MAY 1750, Prestonkirk-?], *John and Robert [bn 3 FEB 1755, bp 9 FEB 1755, Prestonkirk-?]. Most of the children may be found on the FamilySearch website, as can the name of their mother as Joanna.

G2 JOHN FOWLER
John, farmer, farm labourer, [bn7 FEB 1752, bp 23 FEB 1752 Prestonkirk-?] married ISABEL/ISOBEL CURRIE on 24 JAN 1789 in North Berwick, East Lothian.
Isabel [bn c 29 JUL 1768, bp 7 AUG 1768, Whitekirk, E Lothian -?] was the daughter of James and Katherine Merriless (see NOTE below). The baptismal record has Isobel, the daughter of Katharine Mirrilies.

Seven children are known from their marriage: James**, Robert** [bn 25 SEP 1789, bp 25 OCT 1789, Kingston, North Berwick[FS]-?], Catherine/Catharine [bn 18 DEC 1790, bp 26 DEC 1790, Craike, Prestonkirk-?], John [bn 28 DEC 1792, bp 8 JAN 1793, Craike, Prestonkirk -?], Margaret [bn 15 FEB 1797, bp 25 FEB 1797, Brownrigg, Prestonkirk-?], Janet [bn 15 NOV 1802, bp 28 NOV 1802, North Berwick,-?] and *William Hope. The baptismal record for John states that he was born 8 JAN 1793.

**NOTE: The parish records for East Lothian, Scotland used by FamilySearch also show a James Fowler born to John and Isobel on 15 NOV 1789 and baptized 28 NOV 1789. This is incompatible with the data shown for Robert, but more compatible with the date of the marriage of John and Isobel. I suspect that both Robert and James are children of John and Isobel, but that the year of birth of one of their sons is incorrect; possibly the year of Robert’s birth. One of these sons may fit into the gap in births between 1792 and 1797, perhaps, or, more likely, the gap 1797 to 1802. Between 1797 and 1802 there is also a change of address from Prestonkirk to North Berwick, which reinforces the notion that the year of birth for Robert is possibly 1799 not 1789.
