This site is mainly unformatted and unedited. It is hoped to add more information to the site during 2011. It was considered to be better to have an untidy site than no site at all.

FINDING MEMBERS OF THESE FAMILIES
On a computer much public information about this family may be obtained from the internet [I]. The FreeBMD site is particularly helpful to find births, deaths and marriages on England and Wales [FBMD-I]. Available from this site are an increasingly large number of census records and Parish records.
Much more information about this family is freely available to the general public in larger libraries such as State libraries and family history libraries.
Some information on Ancestry.com is free on the internet. Most Ancestry records on the internet are available for a fee. However many larger libraries provide free access to the Ancestry site [AI].
Other self-evident abbreviations also used include BC (birth certificate), MC (marriage certificate) and DC (death certificate). The certificates of all births, deaths and marriages listed on the internet may be purchased by the general public. For England and Wales these certificates may be purchased for all of these events to 2005.
The National Burial Register [NBR] also provides a useful guide to finding information about family members.
These family histories of the Pollard, Hill, King, Jenkins, Whipp and Yem families are still being researched. Most of the information was obtained in the 1990s before internet genealogy was well-developed. Eventually these families will be up-graded.
CENSUS INFORMATION
For most families some reference is made to the census returns for England, Wales and Scotland from 1841 to 1901. The date of the census, when correlated with other information which is available, is useful for assisting in the search for relatives.
The CENSUS DATES were: 6 June 1841; 30 March 1851; 7 April 1861; 2 April 1871; 3 April 1881; 5 April 1891; 31 March 1901 and 1911 (unknown).

DIVISION TWO: BRADFORD-ON-AVON TO BRISTOL
G6 JOHN POLLARD, shearman, butcher
John [2 NOV 1802 Calne WLS-28 SEP 1881] died Bristol GLS aged 78 years.
He married on 23 FEB 1823 in Bradford-on-Avon, WLS HANNAH DAINTON
Hannah [c1803, Bradford-on-Avon WIL-26 JUN 1872] died in Bristol GLS
John had a butcher’s shop in Bradford-on-Avon, which the author has seen. The shop was on the right-hand side of a narrow street going up a steep hill, but the name of the street is unknown.
The family lived in Church Street, Bradford-on-Avon [1841 census]. Living with the family in 1841 was Hanna’s 82 year-old mother, Ann, a weaver. It is possible that the family moved to Bristol soon after Hanna’s mother died. With such a large family there were better employment prospects in a large city like Bristol, compared with a small township like Bradford-on-Avon.
In Bristol the family lived in Christmas Street, [1844]. This address was found in the Mathew’s Annual Bristol and Clifton Directory. They then lived at 12 Horsefair [1845-1848] and at 2 Lamb Street, St Jude (sometimes referred to as 2 Gloster Street) [1851-1875].
The 1871 census lists their address as 3 Gloucester Road. They were still living here in 1876.
John died at 6 Victoria Buildings, Redfield Road, St George, at the home of the Lewis family [p9].
John and Hannah had twelve children:
G7 SARAH POLLARD [6 AUG 1823-NOV 1823] was baptised 14 SEP 1823, all in Bradford-on-Avon

**PAGE 9**
SECTION THREE: THE FAMILY OF ANN [POLLARD] LEWIS
G7 ANN POLLARD [p5]
Ann [c1929-1884 or 1885?] was baptised on 15 JUN 1829 in Bradford-on-Avon. There are two deaths of an Ann Lewis in Bristol between 1881and 1890, both in late Spring and both 55 years old. One was in 1884, while the other occurred in 1885.
Ann married on 28 MAR 1847 in Bristol THOMAS LEWIS [c1826 St Pauls, Bristol-1913], turner, pork butcher.
In 1851 Ann and Thomas lived at 2 Brick Street, BRISTOL with Mary A, 2, and Sarah, 11months. By 1861 the family had shifted to 11 Charles Street, ST JAMES, Bristol. Mary Ann, 12, was a cloth cap maker. The other children were Sarah, 11, Thomas G, 6, Edward J, 3 and Hannah L, 2 months.
The 1871 census shows Thomas and Ann living at 16 Rosemary St with seven children: Sarah, Thomas G, Edward, Hannah, Florence, 5, Henry, 3 and Alfred, 1 month. Ann’s brother, James [p12], lived at this address in 1861.
By 1881 the family was living at 5 Redfield Road, ST GEORGE. The children still living at home were Sarah L, 20 (sic) [it should read Hannah L], Henry and Alfred. Ann’s widowed father, James, was living with the family.
In 1891 the widowed Thomas lived at 5 Victoria Place, St George with Florence, butcher’s assistant, Henry and Alfred [both butchers].
By 1901 the family consists of Thomas, Florence, caring for the household and Alfred, now a plumber’s labourer.
Searching for this family is difficult without further information. Lewis is a rather frequent surname making the searches for marriages and deaths more difficult.
Ann and Thomas had at least eight children:
G8 Mary Ann was born about 1848. There are too many marriages of a Mary Ann Lewis to be certain as to which marriage is hers.
G8 Sarah was born about 1850 There are too many marriages of a Sarah Lewis to be certain as to which marriage is hers.
G8 Thomas Griffith [1855-1873]
G8 Edward John [1857-?] married in 1881 MARY JANE BELSTEN
G8 Hannah Lavinia [1860-?] married in 1883 ALBERT ROGERS
G8 Florence [1865-?]
G8 Henry was born about 1867. There are too many marriages of a Henry Lewis to be certain as to which marriage is his.
G8 Alfred [1871-?]
The gaps in their ages, as shown on the census records, suggests that there were other children, now deceased, between Sarah and Thomas and between Hannah and Florence.
**PAGE 10**
SECTION FOUR: THE FAMILY OF JOHN POLLARD
G7 JOHN POLLARD [p5], pork butcher
John [10 SEP 1831, Bradford-on-Avon, WIL-23 JUN 1883] aged 51 years married on 8 NOV 1853 in Bradford-on-Avon CAROLINE FISHLOCK [bp c1830-16 JAN 1901].
In the 1851 census John is still living at home. Caroline and her sister are visiting the family. In the 1861 census John and Caroline have two children. From early in their marriage John and Caroline lived at 8 Lower Maudlin Street [1854-1861]. By 1865 they had then moved to 2 Silver St, where John died [1865-1883]. In 1885 the widowed Caroline and her family lived at 67 Lower Union Street, St James. By 1891 the family had moved to 15 Lower Union Street, but they later returned to 67 Lower Union Street.
John and Caroline had four children: Henry John [c1856-?] Frederick William [c1860-?] *Mary Ann and *Sarah Ann.
Sub-section I G8 HENRY JOHN POLLARD [c1856-?], pork butcher. Henry did not marry. A Henry J Pollard died in Bristol in 1930. His age is shown on the record as 70, but the age shown may be incorrect.
Sub-section II G8 FREDERICK WILLIAM POLLARD [c1860-?]. Frederick appeared on the 1861 census, but is absent from all other census records, which suggests that he died as a child.
Sub-section III G8 MARY ANN POLLARD [12 OCT 1863-13 JAN 1911] married on 21 May 1892 GEORGE ERNEST THORP [1856, Bath-?], fancy dealer.
The 1901 census showed the family living at 66 Frogmore Street, ABERGAVENNY, Wales. There were two children, John E, [1985, Abergavenny-?] 5 and Edward George [1900-?] 4 months.
Sub-section IV G8 SARAH ANN POLLARD [c1865-1910], pork butcher, married in 1906 GEORGE HENRY FEAR [?-?]. Because Sarah was about 40 years old when she married she may not have had any children.
When her mother, Caroline, died Sarah assumed the position of head of the household. This fact suggests that Henry had an intellectual impairment and so was unable to assume such a role.
**PAGE 11**
SECTION FIVE: THE FAMILY OF GEORGE POLLARD
G7 GEORGE POLLARD [p4], carpenter
George [12 JUN 1836, Bradford-on Avon, WLS-7 JAN 1914] was baptised 19 AUG 1838.

George married [2] BERTHA DENNING [c1855-1904] in 1890. He married [3] FLORENCE GRIFFITHS [?-?] in 1906.
George and his family lived at 21 Clarence Street in 1861. It was a semi-detached house. In the other attached house lived Ann Cleverley, a widow aged 64, pork butcher born Bradford-on Avon. Ann was probably Hannah’s mother. From 1865-1868 they lived at 17 Christmas Street, [Mathew’s Directory]. The 1881 census shows the family living at 16 Lower Maudlin St, St James, Bristol.
George and Hannah had at least seven children: William George [1859 St Phillips, Bristol-?], Ann Augusta [1861-1862],*Herbert John Cleverley, *Isa”bella”, *Alice Caroline, *Christopher and *Edward Albert.
G8 WILLIAM GEORGE POLLARD [1859 St Phillips, Bristol-?]. William appeared on the 1861 census, but is absent from any subsequent census. No marriage or death of William has been found either. The death of a William was recorded in the Bedminster registration district of Bristol in 1862, but the identity of this William Pollard is uncertain.
G8 HERBERT JOHN CLEVERLEY POLLARD
Herbert [1863-?], general labourer, married GERTRUDE ELLEN BOWER [?-16 JUL 1927] in 1892.
When Gertrude died they were living at 4 Backfields Street, ST PAULS, Bristol, GLS.

**PAGE 13**
SECTION SIX: THE FAMILY OF JAMES POLLARD
G7 JAMES POLLARD [p5], pork butcher
James [19 AUG 1840, Bradford-on Avon, WIL-17 MAR 1922 Bristol, GLS aged 81 years] was baptised on 11 APR 1841 in Bradford-on Avon.
He married on 2 OCT 1859 in Bristol MARY ANN JAMES CONSTANT YEM [12 FEB 1839 Bristol-20 APR 1902, Bristol] [p41].
In 1861 James and Mary were living at 16 Rosemary St, the place where Ann and Thomas Lewis were living in 1871. By 1868 they were living in Albert Buildings, St George Rd, but then they moved to 19 Wade St [1870] and 21 Wade St [1872]. The 1871 census shows the family living at Kingsland Place, St Phillips. They were also there in 1875. A Bristol Trade Directory [Mathew’s] has two business addresses for 1880, Silver Street, and Bridewell Street. The 1881 census shows them living at 20 Bright St, St George and the 1891 census gives their address as 29 Bloy St Easton. By the time of the 1901 census the family lived at 119 Bloy Street, Easton. A number of other members of the family also lived in Bloy Street, Easton in 1901.
It is possible that there is a mixture of business and private addresses in this list, although people often lived over or behind a shop.
James and Mary had ten children: Mary Ann Constant [early 1860-died AUG 1860], *James Constant [S-s I, [p13], Fanny [1 JUN 1863-FEB 1865], *William Albert [S-s II, [p13], *Thomas Alfred [S-s III, p16], *Edward John S-s IV, [p12], *Elizabeth [S-s V, [p17], Alice [16 DEC 1871-22 DEC 1872], Charles Ernest [10 JAN 1874-29 OCT 1875] and *Lydia Amy [S-s VI, [p17]
**PAGE 14**

Mathew’s Trade Directory for 1885 indicates that James was living at 17 Christmas Street. This address was confirmed in the 1891 census entry for the family.
In 1901 the family lived at 85 Melrose Road, Bristol. Arthur was a post-boy. Charles and Robert were at school.
James and Caroline had three children:
G9 Arthur James [1 JUN 1886-?]

G8 Sub-section II: WILLIAM ALBERT POLLARD [p12], plumber, railway signalman-G.W.R.
William [12 AUG 1865-31 MAR 1955, Thornbury, GLS, aged 89 years] married on 1 OCT 1889 ANN MARIA HILL [3 JAN 1868, Kilmersdon, SOM-22 MAR 1952 Bristol, GLS].

**PAGE 15**
William and Ann had four children: *Mary Ann Lydia, Beatrice “May”, Gladys Violet and William James “Renwick”.
G9 MARY ANN LYDIA [4 MAR 1890-19 APR 1979] married on 7 DEC 1911 JOHN KING [8 NOV 1887-3 NOV 1966] [p69].
Soon after his marriage John left for South Australia. He had already secured a job there. Accounts differ as to whether John worked in Cowell or in Port Lincoln. During his wait for his wife, John visited Ceduna from where he sent a postcard to hid wife- a postcard still in the possession of the family.
His pregnant bride was not permitted to sail with him. Mary sailed for South Australia about SEP 1912, when their first child was three-months old. The voyage took about three months. Because of her daughter’s very young age and the lack of air-conditioning in that era, it was necessary to take a voyage travelling around the Cape of Good Hope. Small children were not permitted to travel the “hot”, but quicker, route through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. Mary was very seasick for much of the voyage. Her daughter had to be cared for by other passengers. She was fed on diluted sweetened condensed milk, which was the only available milk. Their first child was baptised eventually in Cowell, South Australia.
About 1914 drought overtook the district in which the family lived. The tank water became increasingly scarce. Then their cat disappeared. About ten days’ later the cat’s body was found in the small amount of water in the tank. Since the water could not be discarded Condy’s crystals (potassium permanganate) was added to the water to disinfect it. This purple water was then used for all household purposes, including drinking, cooking and washing. My mother, their eldest child, was old enough at the time to just remember the “pink water” she had to drink. It was something she never forgot until senility overtook her memories. The family had decided, after incidents like the one just related, that living in out-back South Australia was far from ideal. About 1915 the family moved to Hotham Street, South Preston to live near John’s older sister, Eleanor Coffin [p36]
Mary and John had three children: Adelaide Nancy Margaret, Anthony John and P C (married in 1953 in New South Wales, Australia William Sydney Oatley Hewit [1922-1981])

Adelaide had two children: P A and C J; two grandchildren: R M and L L H and two great-grandchildren: R D and C H.
**PAGE 16**
G10 ANTHONY “JOHN” KING
John [MAR 1920-AUG 1942], was killed during WWII. He was a prisoner-of-war on the Japanese ship the “Montevideo Maru” which was torpedoed by the Americans off the Philippines [I]. There are a number of references to this famous event on the internet. At the time of his capture John was a telegraphist and similar, working for the PMG [Post-Master General] in Rabaul, New Britain. John, through his employment, was involved in essential coastal surveillance. This meant that he was unable to enrol as a soldier in WWII. There are reports of John assisting in various ways for about three days after the fall of Rabaul to the Japanese, until his own capture. Unlike the soldiers of WWII, civilians like John, who was playing an essential, but civil, roll in WWII, receive little recognition for their services and resultant deaths.

BOOK TWO: THE HILL FAMILY
The family of George Hill from Kilmerdon, Somerset
THE RELATIVES OF ANN MARIA [HILL] POLLARD
ANN MARIA HILL, who married WILLIAM ALBERT POLLARD in 1889, was the daughter of Henry Hill and his second wife, Lydia Whipp.
DIVISION ONE: THE FAMILY OF EDWARD HILL
G1 EDWARD HILL
Edward [c1797/8, Wanstrow, SOM-5 JUL 1863, Nunney, SOM] was 68 years old when he died. Edward married three times.
Firstly he married ANN DEAN on 2 MAR 1821 at Nunney. Ann died 27 FEB 1835. They had at least six children. Edward then married Elizabeth [Betty], who died 15 June 1850 aged 59 years. Edward married his third wife, HANNAH PALMER, at the end of 1850. Hannah was born in Cranmore somewhere about 1795/6 and died in the Frome registration district in 1872, aged 76 years. At the time of the 1871 census Hannah was living with her step-son, Henry Hill, and his wife, Lydia, in Kilmersdon.
THE CHILDREN OF EDWARD HILL
G2 JOHN HILL was baptised 5 may 1822 at Wanstrow and died 24 June 1838 at Trudoxhill.
G2 HENRY HILL was born about 18 months later [see Division Two below. p27].
G2 ANN HILL was baptised 5 FEB 1826 at Trudoxhill. She married JOHN HUNTLEY on 8 NOV 1843 at Nunney.
G2 JANE HILL was baptised 31 Aug 1828 at Trudoxhill. She married on 26 NOV 1855 at Nunney GEORGE WILLIS.
G2 GEORGE HILL was born in 1831 but baptised on 7 APR 1833 at Trudoxhill with his younger brother, (G2) WILLIAM HILL, born c 1833.
Various records show Edward’s occupation as turner, labourer and hollow turner.
The 1841 census shows that the family lived at Westend, Trudoxhill, Nunney, Somerset.
TRUDOXHILL is a small hamlet of around 50 dwellings about two kilometres SE of Nunney. They are both located approximately midway between Frome and Wanstrow which is located about 8 Kilometres SW of Frome.
The family consists of Edward, 40 years, turner; Elizabeth, 45years; Jane, 13years, George, 10 years and William, 8 years.
The 1851 census for Trudoxhill, Nunney shows Edward 53years; Hannah 58 years; and William 18 years while the 1861 census for Westend, Nunney has Edward 63 years and Hannah 62 years. There are noticeable differences between the relative ages given in various census records and at death making research difficult. It is possible that for Hannah the age of 58 in 1851 was a poorly written and transcribed 55 and that the 62 on the 1861 census was a poorly written and transcribed 65.
**PAGE 30**
DIVISION TWO: THE FAMILY OF HENRY HILL
G2 HENRY HILL
Henry [c1823, Trudoxhill, SOM-13 Aug 1884, Kilmersdon, SOM, aged 60] , blacksmith and farrier, painter, was the second child of EDWARD HILL and ANN DEAN.
He was baptised 25 DEC 1823 at Wanstrow, SOM and was buried 19 AUG 1884 in the local churchyard at Kilmersdon.
Henry died from scirrhon’s [sic] of the liver which had troubled him for two years. Scirrhons are hard lumps, usually a form of tumour or cancer containing much fibrous material. In the liver they are mostly secondary to a primary cancer elsewhere, especially the bowel or stomach.
The 1851 census gave Henry’s address as 30 Church Road, Kilmersdon. The 1871 census and 1881 census simply stated the family’s address as Kilmersdon Village. By 1891 the widowed Lydia was living at 18 Church Road, Kilmersdon. The address on the 1911 census is simply 18 Kilmersdon.
Henry married twice. His first marriage was to ELIZABETH HAMBLIN [c1828, Kilmersdon, SOM-2 SEP 1856] in 1848. Elizabeth was buried in Kilmersdon.
It is possible that Elizabeth died during pregnancy or childbirth. The person who cared for the young children after her death is unknown.
KILMERSDON is located about 12 kilometres NW of Frome and several kilometres south of Radstock. The village dates back over 1000 years, It was named in the Doomsday Book. In the 1800s Kilmersdon was the centre of a large coal mining industry.
The town is reputed to be the location of the famed nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill”. The hill and the well of the nursery rhyme have been restored in recent times.
More information about Kilmersdon may be found on numerous sites on the internet.
Four CHILDREN are known from this marriage between Henry and Elizabeth: Sarah Ann, Emily Jane, Elizabeth Jane and Edward Henry [p33].
SECTION I G3 SARAH ANN HILL baptised 10 DEC 1848 about whom little more is known. Sarah was on the 1851 census, but not on the 1861 census (at least, not living with her family).
…G3 ELIZABETH JANE HILL was baptised 21 APR 1853 and died a few months later.
SECTION II G3 EMILY [JANE] HILL
Emily [21 JAN, 1851-1916] was baptised 16 FEB 1851. She married WILLIAM ANTHONY BODEN [1851-1911] on 9 DEC 1876. The second given name, Jane, is on Emily’s marriage certificate and on some census records. Often her name is stated just as Emily.
William, machine printer, the son of Mary Ann, was baptised 15 JUN 1851 in Matlock, DBY. Only his mother is mentioned on his baptismal record. His father was most likely Samuel Boden who married Mary Ann Young towards the end of 1845. They had at least one other child, Samuel, baptised on 11 OCT 1846.
**PAGE 31**
Sub-section 1 BODEN FAMILY HISTORY
In the mid-1840s there were three marriages of a Samuel Boden in the district of Matlock, in the registration district of Bakewell. One marriage was to a Mary, the other to a Mary Ann Young. Baptisms of their children overlapped.
There was at least one previous baptism in Matlock of a child born to Samuel Boden and Mary Ann. No more baptisms occur in the area after the birth of William. This information suggests that William’s father may have died in late 1850 or early 1851, or have been away from the area at the time, such as serving overseas in the army or navy. Mary Ann Boden was remarried in 1860 to Anthony Brace (see 1911 census).
In the previous generation there were a number of marriages of an Anthony Boden. One of these marriages was of an Anthony Boden to Hannah Bradley on 17 NOV 1817. They had a son, Samuel, born 12 or 13 JAN 1818 and baptised DEC 1818. This Samuel Boden is most likely the Samuel who married Mary Ann Young, who named her son William Anthony, using the name of his grandfather as a second given name.
Mary Ann Brace died in Derby DBY towards the end of 1915.
On the 1881 census Emily and William A 29 were shown as living at 7 Stockbrook Road, DERBY, St Werburgh with their two children William Henry (3) and Edward (6 months).

SECTION III G3 EDWARD HENRY
Edward [1854-1895], coal miner, was baptised 11 May 1854. He was living at home on both the 1861 census return and 1871 census return.
He married Eliza Perkins [c1840, Chewton Mendip, SOM-?] in Clutton, Somerset, in 1880 and died there in 1895.
This was probably a second marriage for the much older Eliza who already had two children, Lucy Perkins [c1871-?] and Frank [c1875-?]. Her first marriage was almost certainly that of Frank Perkins to Eliza Moon in 1871.
There were no children from the marriage of Edward and Eliza.
In 1881 Edwin (sic), Eliza and Eliza’s two children were living in Stratton-on-the-Fosse.
Clutton is about ten kilometres north-west of Kilmersdon.
**PAGE 34**
Henry was married for a second time on 27 May 1860 to LYDIA WHIPP [31 MAR 1840-12 NOV 1931]. Lydia was the daughter of James Whipp and Hannah Palmer, [see Whipp family [p 37]].
.
Henry and Lydia had eleven CHILDREN, all born and baptised at Kilmersdon, SOM. These children are: Henry James, William Charles, Sarah Ann, Rose Selena (has a number of variations of the name), Ann Maria, Martha Jane, Ellen, George Albert, Charlotte, Elizabeth Sarah and Ethel Lottie. This information differs from the information provided by Lydia on the 1911 census where she omits the children who died in infancy or were otherwise forgotten, such as Rose. Rose left home at a very young age, unlike the other children.
G3 HENRY [HARRY] JAMES HILL
Henry [c1861-?], labourer, foreman cleanerwas baptised 15 March 1861. He married in 1879 AGNES SCRIVEN [1861, Charlton Adam SOM-?]. They had at least two children: including Louise Kate baptised 9 NOV 1879 and Herbert John Scriven baptised 6 NOV 1881.
The family moved a number of times, as shown by the birthplaces of their children.
They have not been found on the 1881 census.

William [c1862-?], blacksmith, was baptised 2 JAN 1863. He married in 1889 Sealy Eliza Perry [1868, Radstock, Clutton, SOM-1938, Bristol, GLS]. Sealy was the daughter of Sarah.
William and Sealy had at least four children: Elsie, Olive, Florence and Edna.
G4 FLORENCE MAY HILL
Florence, born 29 MAR 1894 Kilmersdon, married on 6 SEP, 1920 Ernest Haddon Davey born 20 MAY 1893 Martock, Yeovil SOM, the son of Louis and Emma Jane nee Reed. Their son, Louis Haddon Davey, born 1921 married on 24 DEC 1947 Irene Derrick, nee Wilson divorced wife of Charles Francaise Derrick. Louis and Irene, together with a son from her first marriage migrated to Australia after WW11. They did not like Sydney and returned to England several years later.
G3 SARAH ANN HILL, born 2 JAN 1864. Nothing more is known about Sarah. She may have been stillborn as there is no baptismal record for her. Otherwise she probably died as a young child, but there is no record of a death or burial.
G3 ROSE ANNA SELINA HILL
Rose [1865-?], servant, was baptised 1 OCT 1865. At birth her name was registered as Rosa Selena, but she was baptised as Rose Anna Selina. Rose appeared in the 1871 census for Kilmersdon, living with her family.
By the time of the 1881 census Rose 17 (sic) was working as a servant in the household of a formerly Somerset family, that of Matthew Cannon. Matthew ran the Cross Keys Coffee Tavern at 42 Hampstead Road, London, MDX [RG11: 0197/36 p11]. On the night of the census there were ten visitors in the household, with Rose the only servant.
The marriage of a Rose Hannah S has been found in 1891 in the Cardiff registration district. This person is quite possibly the daughter of Henry and Lydia.
**PAGE 35**
G3 ANN MARIA HILL
Ann [3 JAN 1868, Kilmersdon, SOM-22 MAR 1952 Bristol, GLS] married William Pollard Further details are found in the Pollard family history [pk].
G3 MARTHA JANE HILL
Martha [c1870-1906] was baptised 27 MAY 1870. She married in 1892 ARTHUR FRED “Fred” PARFITT [5 MAR 1871, Shepton Mallett, SOM-1933, Weymouth DOR (?)]. Arthur was remarried in 1912 to Martha’s sister, Charlotte (see below). Arthur’s second given name was simply Fred, not Frederick.
Martha and Fred had one son, William Thomas [1894, Faulkland, SOM-?]. A William T Parfitt married Sarah H M Bullock in 1924 in Pontypool, Wales.
In 1911 the 16 year-old William was working as an underground miner/collier labourer. In 1911 his father was working as a coal miner/hewer.
G3 ELLEN HILL was baptised 5 JAN 1873. There are several possible marriages of Ethel Hill in the Frome registration district.
G3 GEORGE ALBERT HILL was baptised 11 APR 1875.
G3 CHARLOTTE HILL
Charlotte [1877-?] was baptised 15 APR 1877.
She married in 1912 ARTHUR F “Fred” PARFITT. There were no children from this marriage. “Aunt Char”, as she was known, was present at the death of her mother. Fred had married previously her older sister, Martha Jane.
G3 ELIZABETH SARAH HILL [1879-c1897, Bath, SOM] was baptised 8 June 1879. Sarah drowned in the Canal at Bath.
G3 ETHEL LOTTIE HILL
Ethel was baptised 14 May 1882. An Ethel L Hill married Alfred H Berry in the Bath region in 1919.
Lydia was a remarkable woman. The 1891 census shows that she had kept her family together after her husband’s death. To earn money she was, at 51 years old and having borne such a large family, hauling coal in the local mines. One story is that after her husband’s death one daughter, aged about 18 years old, drowned in an agricultural water ditch and so Lydia had to identify the body, Family oral history states that her hair “turned white overnight” from the shock of the tragedy. So far that daughter has not yet been identified.

DIVISION FOUR: THE FAMILY OF EMMA JENKINS
G4: EMMA JENKINS [p-]
Emma, [1923, Freiston, LIN-23 MAR 1903], seemingly also known as Eleanor, died as Emma Sanigar aged 77 at 15 West Quay Road Poole. The age of Emma varies on the later available documents. She was descended from ARTHUR ARSCOTT who died in 1763 and was buried at Tetcot, Devon.
Emma's situation was difficult, and probably very lonely. It is quite possible that Emma was sent to work, most likely as a live-in servant or maid, when she was ten years old, or not much older than that; especially since her parents were elderly .Her parents died when she was in her mid-20s. By then her three much older surviving brothers (one actually died 1848 without children) were all married and with large families of their own, and so they hardly knew her. It appears that her brothers had little or no contact with their sister. Furthermore they were coastguards and customs officers and so moved around a lot, from Ireland to Grimsby.
Emma does not appear to have returned to her nephews and nieces in Grimsby, LIN, where she was born and possibly spent her childhood. They were about the same age as Emma, but she probably did not really know them either. She was alone in the world with a large, uninterested, uncaring family all in the distance and unfamiliar and some, perhaps, even unknown to her. It all sounds so Dickensian!
Emma married three times.
Emma married on 21 JAN 1854 in Bristol ROBERT KING [?-c1859 (?)]. Robert was the son of John, gentleman.
Previously, Emma had given birth to a son, ROBERT JENKINS, out-of-wedlock on 7 DEC 1851 in St Peters Hospital, Castle Precincts, Bristol. When Emma married Robert assumed the second family name KING
For information on the descendants of Emma/Eleanor see Book Four: The King Family below [p 66].
Emma/Eleanor was the great, great grandmother of the author of this family history.

G5: JULIA KEZIAH KING [31 AUG 1858, Earl Mead, Bristol (Clifton/Ashley)-1 JUN 1863] died at Newfoundland Lane, Bristol from scarlatina (an infectious disease).

Emma and Joseph had one daughter: *Mary Ann.
G5: MARY ANN GODDARD [23 JUN 1864-?] was born at 12 Frederick Street Liverpool/St Thomas. Margaret MARRIED on 3 DEC 1881 in St Paul's, Poole CHARLES BAILEY, labourer, 19, Charles was the son of Charles Bailey, gardener. Joseph Goddard now a labourer.

BOOK FIVE: THE WHIPP FAMILY
The family of James Whipp from Berkshire and Oxfordshire
THE WHIPP FAMILY
The author has been researching this family since the early 1990s. She was helped by two other members of the family also interested in the Whipp family history: Pearl Whipp from New Zealand [I] in the 1990s and then by Ernest Whipp from Reading, BRK in the early 2000s. She was able to exchanged information with both of these researchers.
Over the ensuing years much more information about the family has slowly become available. The internet has made the search even easier and so another period of review was commenced.
The family of interest here uses the surnames Whipp and Whippe interchangeably. The variation of Whippe is used predominantly from the 1860s. It is necessary to consider both spellings when searching for members of this family. The spelling of the surname may be inconsistent, even for the same person.

Whipp (and its variants) is a family name found predominantly in Lancashire and Yorkshire, although the name did occur in a few other, mainly northern, counties as well. There is, however, one family from Berkshire and Oxfordshire which can be traced back to Wiltshire in the 1600s.. It is unknown whether the family name of this clan from southern England arose independently or whether there was originally a link to their northern counterparts.
Much of the early information about the Whipp family in Berkshire (and later in Oxfordshire and in other English counties) may be verified from the International Genealogical Index [I]. The individual entries have not been annotated.

**PAGE 73**
DIVISION TWO: JAMES WHIPPE AND HIS DESCENDANTS
G8 JAMES WHIPPE AND HIS FAMILY
James [c1808-19 MAR 1878] was baptised 16 OCT 1808, St Helen’s, Abington and died at the Reading Union, Reading BRK and was buried at the Reading Cemetery, Junction, BRK. James used both Whipp and Whippe as the spelling of his surname.
James married HANNAH PALMER on 19 DEC 1831 in All Saints’ Church, Oxford OXF.
Hannah [c1813-26 JAN 1892] was baptised 2 MAY 1813 at Stanton St John, OXF. She was the daughter of Philip Palmer and Sarah. When she died Hannah was living with her son, Charles, and his wife (see below), at Woodditton, SUF.
Oral history tells of James having been bought out of the army where he was a drummer boy. No substantiation of this information has been found.
In 1851 James and his family were living at Red Lion Square, Oxford. James was an ostler, William was a printer’s apprentice to a pressman, while Hannah and Charlotte were both servants. By 1861 the family had moved to Victoria Court, George Street, Oxford. In 1871 they were living at the Brewers Arms Hotel in Bridge Street, READING, BRK. In 1881 Hannah was a visitor in Bridge Street, READING.
James and Hannah had seventeen known children: *James, *William, *Hannah, Charlotte, *Lydia, *John, Charles [1845-1846], *Charles, *Sarah Palmer, twins (Edwin and Emma [1851-1851], *Rosa, *Philip, twins Henry and Robert [both 1857-1857] and twins *Frederick and William [1858-1858]. It is rumoured within the family that there were actually about 21 or 22 children. Obviously these children did not survive. No births, deaths or baptisms have been found. Quite possibly there were other sets of twins which were born prematurely and had neonatal deaths, with neither event being recorded. Such an event or events may have occurred in the three year gap in years between the births of William [1834] and Hannah [1837].
The author has some doubts about William being the twin of Frederick. No birth or death of William was registered, unlike the birth of Frederick which was registered. Furthermore, James and Hannah already had a son, William, who was still alive. William may have been stillborn and given the name in a hurry , without really thinking about the name he should be given.
It is possible, however, that William was stillborn or had a neonatal death and so registration of his birth and death were considered unnecessary.
**PAGE 74**
G9 JAMES WHIPP/E, baker, general labourer, painter
James [1833, Stanton St John, OXF-1914, Newbury, BRK, aged 81] was married to MARTHA STREET [c1835, Litchfield, HAM-1904, Easthampstead] in Kensington, London in 1866. James had switched to using the surname Whippe by the time he had married.
In 1861 James (Whipp) 27 was a servant (baker’s man) living with a family at High Street, OXFORD, St Clements.
His 1871 census record has not survived.
In 1881 James (Whippe), general labourer, and Martha lived at Hampshire Cottage, London Road, WARFIELD, BRK with their four children, James W 13, assistant in a bakery; Edith 11, Rose 10 and Charles 7. The four children were born in Cranford, MDX.
By 1891 the family had moved to Bullbrook, BRACKNELL, BRK. James was now a painter, James W was a boot salesman and Charles J was a draper’s clerk. Edith P had no occupation shown. Presumably she helped her mother run the household, a difficult and very laborious task in that era.
In 1901 Edith P and Charles J, commercial clerk, were still living with their parents at London Road, WARFIELD, BRK.
By 1911 James was living with his daughter, Edith, and her husband, Alfred Rufey-see below.
G10 JAMES WALTER WHIPPE, assistant in a bakery, boot salesman
James [1867, Cranford, MDX-1922, Windsor, BRK] married 1) FANNY MILES [1871, Tunstall, KEN-?] in 1895 in the Easthampton, BRK, district.
In 1901 James and Fanny and their daughter, Margaret F, 4, lived in Church Road, WARFIELD BRK.
In 1907 James married 2) Margaret Cook. No death or remarriage of Fanny has been found.
Nothing more is known about James’ daughter, Margaret.
G10 EDITH PIESLEY WHIPPE [1870-?].
Edith was married in 1908 to Alfred Rufey in the Easthampton region, BRK. On her marriage certificate Edith’s second given name is spelt Peisley.

G10 CHARLES JOHN WHIPPE [1874-?]
G9 WILLIAM WHIPP/E, porter, printer’s apprentice to a pressman
William [1834, Oxford-1873, aged 38] died in Reading. William died from phthisis, a common name for tuberculosis (also known as consumption because of the severe wasting of the body which accompanied the condition). He did not marry. William also switched to using the surname Whippe.
In 1861 William was a porter lodging with the Adams family at 4 Adam’s Yard. St Giles, Oxford. By 1871 William had returned home to live with his parents, possibly because he was ill. His occupation was given as Grocer’s porter.
**PAGE 75**
G9 HANNAH WHIPP, servant
Hannah [1837, Staines, MDX-?] married JOHN BANKS [c1838, Lacock, WIL-?], stone mason, in 1858 in Oxford.
In 1861 John was a servant/footman at 2 Royal Crescent, Walcot, Bath, SOM. Charlotte was not with John on the census night. In 1871 Charlotte and John, stone mason, were living at 7 Chatham Road, Newington, St Mary, London. By 1881 they were living at 365 Kensington Road, Lambeth, SRY. There were no children from their marriage.
In 1891 John, 52, was a dyer (?) and cleaner was living with Annie, 62, in the Bath district. Annie was born in Newent, GLS.
Hannah has yet to be found in the 1891 census record. A Hannah Banks died early in 1890 in Whitehaven in northern England. There are several other possible deaths of a Hannah Banks, including in the New Forest district of Hampshire in 1907.
G9 CHARLOTTE WHIPP, servant
No marriage or death of Charlotte [1838, Maidenhead-?] has been found. She was living at home, but working as a servant in 1851. She has not been found in the 1861 census.
G9 LYDIA WHIPP, servant
Lydia [1840, Maidenhead-1931, Kilmersdon] married HENRY HILL in Kilmersdon, Somerset, on 27 MAY 1860. Details concerning Lydia and her family are included in the notes of the section for The Hill Family, [p27]. This is the branch through which the author is linked to the Whipp family.
**PAGE 76**
G9 JOHN WHIPP/E
John [22 SEP 1842, Maidenhead-14 MAY 1914, Watford] was married on 11 MAY 1878 in Sherbourne, St John HAM (and registered in the Basingstoke district) to ALICE TAPLIN [c1840/1-16 MAR 1910, aged 59]. Alice was buried in Reading.
In 1881 John 39, groom, and Alice 29 lived at Bury Street, RUISLIP (near Uxbridge) with Alice C 2 and Agnes 6 months. The family were still at this address in 1891. John was now a gardener as well as a groomsman. His children were Alice 12, Agnes 10 William J 7 and Philip J 2. Before the 1901 census the family had moved back to Oxford.
On the night of the census John stayed the night with his employer kkkk. Alice and Philip J 12 (called Whipps (sic) on the record) were at home at 1 Evergreen Cottage, St Giles, Oxford.

William [14 FEB 1884 Uxbrigde-1973] married twice. He married ETHEL NELLY/NELLIE FAULKNER [1884, Winslow, BKM-1975, Aylesbury, BKM] on 9 APR 1912. They had two sons: *William J and Robert James [3 AUG 1918, Winslow-2005, Bedford, BDF].
Ethel did not remarry.
William married ALICE ELIZABETH KISLINBURY (sic) [1899, Lewes, SSX-1994, Isle of Wight, HAM].
The date of this marriage has not been found on the England and Wales Marriage Index. They may have married in Scotland or in Ireland. Also, it may have been an informal marriage that was not legally confirmed. This last possibility seems to be the most likely as Alice’s death is registered as “Alice Elizabeth Kislingbury Whippe”. The form of the name, Kislingbury, was also used on the birth certificates of her four children.
Note: although there a small number of births under the name Kislinbury in the late 1800s on the BDM indexes for England there are no subsequent marriages under this name. All marriages are in the name of Kislingbury. The births of children also use the Kislingbury form of the name on the index.
William and Alice had four children: Gerald Leslie [m 1941 Eileen Jessie Levings [1912-1991, SRY], Patricia J, Ernest W and Ella L. The four births were registered in Greenwich, London.

Newmarket spans the Cambridgeshire-Suffolk border. Charles’ mother, Hannah, was living with this family when she died in 1892. Charles switched to using the surname Whippe.
Charles was living at 1 St Peters Road, Reading, at the home of his sister, Rosa Wadhams, when he died. Both Rosa’s husband, Joseph, and her son-in-law, Frank Herbert Walter, are named in the will of Charles.
There were no children from the marriage of Charles and Sarah.
**PAGE 78**
G9 SARAH PALMER WHIPP, dressmaker
Sarah [1848-1933, Oxford, aged 85] married WILLIAM HENRY WHITCHELO [c1848-1907], labourer, on 1 OCT 1871. When they married Sarah was living at Bridge Street, Reading and William was living at Thorn Street,, Reading.
The death of William has not been found for certain. The most likely death is that of a William Whichelo who died in 1907, aged 57, in Henley, BRK.
The children of Sarah and William include William Henry [1874, Chelsea-1949], Charles Frederick [c1876-?], Rosa Louisa [1878, Henley-?], Josiah Thomas [c1880, Steyning-1920, Reading], Emily Bessie [1884, Reading-?], Lucy Agnes [c1888, Henley-?], George Philip[1890, Henley,-1935, Reading] and Henry James [c1893, Henley-?]
Note: two boys named Charles Frederick were born in the same district and only a few weeks apart. One married in 1902; the other married in 1903. It is difficult to separate the two boys without their BDM certificates.
In 1891 and 1901 Sarah and William lived at Emma Green, CAVERSHAM, OXF.
Emma Green is a small village located just north of Caversham Hill, to the north of the township of Caversham. Current road atlases spell Emma Green as Emmer Green. The 1831 Ordnance map for the district spelt the village name as Emmir Green.

G9 EDWIN WHIPP, horseman, stableman, horse keeper, groom
Edwin [1851-1923, Brentford, aged 72 years]: an Edwind (sic) Whipp married ANN WHALE MARCHANT [c 1853-1917, Brentford] in Brentford in 1874. Brentford is located on the north side of the Thames River, in London, between Ealing to the north and Kew to the south. Richmond is immediately south of Kew.
Edwin had very little contact with his siblings from a young age, for he had left home by the age of 11 years. Since his first name is so frequently misspelt he probably had very little, if any, schooling. Also, unlike most of his brothers and sisters, he retained the surname Whipp rather than modifying the spelling to Whippe.
In 1861 Edwin was an apprentice stablehand in Fyfield, Wiltshire. He was under the tutelage of the horse trainer, Alexander Taylor.
In 1871 Edwin (named Edward), groom, was a lodger at 71 Shouldham Street, MARYYLEBONE, London.
By 1881 Edmund (sic) and his wife, Ann, and their two children, Rose A, 5 and James, 2 lived in Twickenham in S-W London.
In 1891 Edwin (40) and Ann (38) lived at 14 Beatrice Road, RICHMOND, SRY. They had living with them three children: James (12), Lydia (6) and Florence (2).
By 1901 Edwin, 51, Ann, 47, Florence (11) and Maud (6) lived at 62 Hamblin Road, RICHMOND, SRY.
Edwin and Ann had at least five children: Rose Ann, James, Lydia, Annie “Florence” and Alice “Maud”. The big gaps between their ages suggests that there were other children born who did not survive for very long, but no likely registrations of births or deaths have been found..
G10 ROSE ANN WHIPP
Rose [c1875-?] is most likely the Rose who married in 1903 in Richmond, London.
G10 James WHIPP

G10 ETHEL WADHAMS
Ethel [1886-?] married in 1910 FRANK HERBERT WALTER [1883, Lambeth, SRY-?], civil servant.
It should also be noted that the hand-writing on their marriage certificate is very poor, making the interpretation of Frank’s surname difficult. His name has been recorded officially as both Walter and Walker. The births of his two children are under the surname Walter. There are no suitable births for the surname Walker. Frank Walter is also named in the will of Charles Whippe (1920).
They had at least two children: Greta R [1912-?] and Jeanne M [1924-?].
G10 PHILIP DOUGLAS WADHAMS

G9 PHILIP [PALMER] WHIPP, groom
Philip [1855-1939, Windsor, aged 84] married [as Philip Whippe] ANNIE DRAYCOTT [nee Ann Marlow] in 1877 in London. Annie [c1848-1917, Windsor, aged 67], laundress, was a widow with two daughters still living with her when she remarried. She was the widow of William Nethercliff Draycott, whom she had married in 1862. Anne/Annie later called herself Hannah, her name in the 1901 census and on the death index. Hannah may have been her birth name as there are several births of a Hannah Marlow in Berkshire which fit her approximate age. The age of Hannah found in the various records is inconsistent.
In 1871 Philip was working in the same stables as his brother, Charles, in Woodditton, SUF.
The 1881 census recorded that Philip was in Reading Gaol. He was serving time for burglary (Derek Ive, via Ernest Whipp). Annie, 32, laundress, was living on London Road, WINKFIELD, Bullbrook, Easthampstead with their son, Philip, 24 months, and two daughters, Annie Draycott, 11, and Cassey Draycott, 9, from her earlier marriage. She recorded that she was born in Stockcross, BRK.
In 1891 Philip, 36, labourer, and Anne, 45, born Newbury, BRK, were living at Prestwood Common (?) Easthampton, BRK. Their son, Philip was not with them on the night of the census.

BOOK SIX: THE YEM FAMILY
The family of Mary Ann James Constant Yem from Bristol, the wife of James Pollard
THE FAMILY OF MARY ANN JAMES CONSTANT YEM
[Mary was the wife of James Pollard [p12]]
IN THE BEGINNING
The earliest known history of this family is confused.
The family appears to trace back to a WILLIAM YEM from Ruardean in the Forest of Dean.
William has two sons: William [?-1665, Bristol] (who married Frances) and *Stephen.
G2 STEPHEN YEM
Stephen had five children: William, John, *Stephen, *Mary and Alice.
G3 MARY YEM
Mary married JOHN KEMPSTER on 23 JUL 1760 in St Michaels, Bristol [Vital Records Index].
G3 STEPHEN YEM, carpenter, who lived in Bristol, GLS, England, had tho sons, JOHN and STEPHEN, both of whom were also carpenters.
The will of JOHN, who died in 1770, was administered on the 11th Sept 1770. His father was still alive.
A STEPHEN YEM, aged 40 years and hence born in 1732, was an in-patient at the St James Infirmary, Bristol on 12 MAR 1772. It is not known if this was the father or the son. For many years this appears to be the only Yem family in Bristol.
The name Yem means “nephew” in Welsh and originated in the vicinity of the Forest of Dean on the west bank of the River Severn in northern Gloucestershire. There are a number of variations in the spelling of the name including “Yemm” “Yenm” and “Yeme” and “Yeam[e]”.
Only 38 people with the name Yem appear on the 1881 census of England.
**PAGE 84**
G4 STEPHEN YEM Jnr, victualler
Stephen married twice. He married ANN FINCH on the 25 JUL 1771 St James, Bristol. [VRI]. Her death has not been found. No children from this marriage have been found.
Stephen was married for a second time to NANCY (Ann) CONSTANT on 3 MAR 1776 in the church of St Augine-the-Less [VRI].
ANN was buried on 9 MAR 1796 at St James, leaving a young family.
STEPHEN predeceased her. His will was proved on 8 May 1792.
Stephen Yem is recorded as a victualler at “The Bell” Hillgate St, Bristol, from1791 to 1794, suggesting that his eldest son, Stephen Constant, assumed responsibility for the business as his occupation is also given as Victualler. As well as this property Stephen’s will refers to properties at St Michael’s Hill and Dalton’s Court, Bristol, suggesting that he was a fairly wealthy man.
No daughters are known from the marriage of Stephen and Nancy (Ann), but there were five son: *Stephen, *John, *William, *Henry and *Thomas. Each son was given their mother’s maiden surname, Constant, as a second given name.
THE CHILDREN OF STEPHEN YEM AND NANCY CONSTANT
G5 STEPHEN CONSTANT YEM, victualler, was baptised in St Michael’s Church, Bristol on 2 NOV 1777 [VRI]. He died in 1804. Administration of his goods was granted on 21 JUN 1804. Stephen did not marry.
G5 JOHN CONSTANT YEM, victualler, was born about 1779 and baptised with his younger brother on 2 APR 1782, aged 3 years.
He married on 26 AUG 1801 at St Michael’s SUSANNAH MORGAN [VRI]. Susannah died 20 SEP 1826. On his marriage certificate the name “William” is changed to “John”.
Three children of John and Susannah are known:
ANN CONSTANT YEM baptised 26 AUG 1804 St James, STEPHEN DAVID YEM born in March 1806 and baptised 16 APR 1806 St James, and CHARLES CONSTANT YEM. No further trace of these children has been found in Bristol.

G5 WILLIAM CONSTANT YEM [c1780-20 MAR 1850], tailor, was baptised on 2 APR 1782 at St James.
William married on 31 MAR 1806 in St John’s Bedminster, SOM [Bristol] ANN TOVEY [c1784-1 APR 1857, aged 73 years]. The family lived at 3 Tankard Close, St Michael [DC] [1850-1857].
William and Ann had three, or possibly four, children:

G6 WILLIAM CONSTANT YEM, died, unmarried, 13 SEP 1888 [DC]. His age is given as 69 years but earlier records suggest that he was older than this. William died at the Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton, from senile decay. The 1881 census names his occupation as “General labourer”.
G 6HENRY EDWARD CONSTANT YEM [c1819-11 MAY 1854] was a carpenter and box-maker [DC]. No marriage of Henry has been found.
NOTE: Church records for the church of St Augine-the-Less include the marriage of John Yem to Mary Ann Reid on 17 AUG 1830. Nothing more is known about this couple. Hence it is unknown if they are related to the other Yem families living in Bristol.
Also, an Elizabeth Yem died on 28 JUN 1818, aged 6 years.
It is possible that both John and Elizabeth were children of either John or William mentioned above.
A WILLIAN HEM was baptised on 22 SEP 1804 in the St James’ Church in Bristol. No other people with the family name Hem have been found in the area. He may be linked in some way to the Yem family.
G5 HENRY CONSTANT YEM was born 5 MAR 1788, was baptised 27 APR 1788 and was buried 28 JUN 1789.

Thomas [31 MAR 1786-26 FEB 1859] was baptised 1 APR 1787 in St James’ Church. An inquest was held into his death. Thomas died in Cheese Lane. This may not have been his residence.
He married THAMSEN CURNOW on 12 APR 1815 in the church of St Philip and St Jacob.
Thamsen (Thomasina) [c1787-1 JUN 1860 [DC]] was born in Ludgvan, Cornwall.
