Out of the Box: Using Technology to Follow Your Dreams
There are many people who have little or no speech. Some of these people refer to themselves as having complex communication needs. Computers and speech generating devices can make it easier to participate in everyday life. Out Of The Box - Using Technology to Follow Your Dreams is an Australian project based on the Augmentative Communication and Empowerment (ACES) course delivered annually at Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities’(USA). “Out Of The Box” aims to enhance the ability of adults with little or no speech to be leaders and active contributors in their own communities through the use of technology. This project is a joint initiative of Scope and Yooralla in Victoria. The group initially got together in March 2007 in Melbourne to begin dreaming. Since then we have had 2 live in courses both within the city of Melbourne. Funding for this project is a constant challenge. However, we will never give up on our dreams. This Online community has been set up for participants of this course, their supporters and anyone else with a complex communication need who maybe interested in Using Technology to Follow their Dreams.
