Blake Street Earley 1900. This is a very early photo of Blake Street, notice the Horse and Gigs. In 1902 the Nathalia Fire Brigade was formed,a Nathalia plumber made the Belltower and a bell was purchased by the brigade this bell alerted the town to any fire, as water reticulation had just happened it saved many houses and shops, unlike a few years before when water had to be bucketed from the often very low creek. In 1927 the Nathalia War Memorial was built on this spot and the Belltower removed to the back of the fire brigade. Blake Street has seen many changes over the years as has our centre plantation, the picket fence has long ago been replaced and is now open with nice lawns,Table and chair sets have been added, this has attracted tourists to stop awhile and see what Nathalia has to offer.

Image First Water Tower 1902
This water tower and house, and Weir were built when reticulation came to Nathalia,in 1902, the house was let to the engine driver and collector responsible for keeping the water pumps etc in running order so the town could have water. This article from the Nathalia Herald Oct 22 1901 Departmental Engineering. When the estimates for the Nathalia water scheme were framed,a sum of 200 pounds was set down for a residence to be erected near the water tower for the engine driver and collector. In due time when tenders were invited no contractor could be found to do the work, for anything like this sum. The plans were modified and modified and tenders invited over and over again until at length the commissioners resolved to accept one at 225 pounds,or there abouts. The Water supply department officers have refused to give their approval for this. They demand that the cost of the cottage be kept within the estimate, and to that end advise the excision of the hallway from the plan and a reduction,in the size of the rooms. It is a pity that some of these starch collard creatures in the city could not be compelled to reside in this Turkish bath sort of a building during a period extending say, from the end of November to the beginning of March.By that time they would not have sufficient energy left in them to object to the erection of a dwelling as big as a Toorack mansion.
