Creating colourful and individual hand made rugs to send to the patients at the Hamlin Fistula Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Made by an informal network of women throughout the Goulburn Valley, a rug is given to each new patient arriving at the hospital, and she takes it home with her when she leaves. It both comforts and warms her and shows her someone cares about her. An exhibition of the rugs held at the Community Church, Corner of McEwen and Crichton Roads, Kyabram, on Saturday, 8th August 2009 raised over $500 to pay the postage costs to send the rugs to Ethiopia. International post is the most secure way to send goods, with an expectation that they will arrive without pilfering. Thanks to all those people who contributed to the day. We know of two rugs completed since the exhibition, so it seems this will be an on-going project. We welcome any donations of yarns, no matter what quantity, thickness, or type. Our knitters can combine them to make gorgeous rugs which we hope will both keep out the cold, and lift the spirits of the girls who receive them. The Community Church of Kyabram will happily pass the yarn on to the knitters, as will any of the Art MOOveau ladies. |
