| The Avenue of Honour commemorates the veterans of Buchan and district who fought in World War 1 and Australia's later conflicts.
Location : In the village of Buchan South which is about 8km south of Buchan - follow the signposts on the main road to Buchan. The avenue consists of two rows of English Oaks (Quercus Robur) planted in about 1920. It formed the entrance to the Buchan South Public School (No. 3256) which was located on the site between 1896 and 1990. Some history of the Memorial. The Victorian Department of Education played a large part in the commemoration of Australia's role in the Allied Victory in World War 1. This included publishing a fine book entitled 'The Education Department's Record of Service' where it encouraged the creation of memorials such as avenues of honour, the coining of medallions and the recording of those who served on rolls of honour. The RSL Victoria publication(1994), War Memorials of Victoria, outlines the background to the creation of avenues of honour and other memorials in the years following World War One and includes an entry about the Buchan South Avenue. The oak trees were planted by relatives of those who served and in some cases by notable members of the local community or school students. The 'Friends of The Avenue' are researching the planting ceremonies and would be pleased to hear from anyone who has information available - see contact details below. So far we know that the first two were planted by Mrs J.Hansford & Mrs E.C.R Mackieson. A further two by Mrs Christina Mildenhall for her two sons, C.E. & E.H. Mildenhall. Another by Nancy Mackieson nee Halmshaw in honour of her husband William Breckon Mackieson and school student Zillah Butterworth planted another in honour of Harry Markus. Following the closure of the school the land became a grazing lease and remained so until 2006 when the Buchan Heritage Group Inc. formed a sub-group called the Friends of the Avenue. They arranged for that portion containing the memorial to be gazetted as a public reserve and a Committee of Management was established. The restoration of the Avenue has enabled the Buchan and district community to hold ceremonies which remember and honour the deeds and sacrifices of service men and women and their families. |
