The May 2008 issue of the Buchan Bulletin reported as follows :
In perfect Autumn weather more than 100 people assembled on Anzac Day at the Buchan South Avenue of Honour to pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the various combats over the years. The ceremony began with an invitation by organiser Clive Norfolk for all to gather at the Aleppo Pine at the far end of the Avenue and after a short moment of remembrance the large group walked back down the Avenue led by returned servicemen from the district, Dru Mackieson(WW2) and Jeff McCole(Vietnam) to assemble in front of the new wrought iron gates. Clive then welcomed all present and introduced the Official Guest, Commander Fiona Sneath, RAN, who delivered the Anzac Day address. Her partner Warrant Officer Peter Kenworthy OAM read the Ode of Remembrance. Fiona and her family were visiting her parents Peta and Al Sneath of Buchan.Wreaths were then placed along the fence at the front of the Avenue followed by the Last Post, one minute silence and the Reveille when the Buchan RSL Flag was raised by local resident Rhonda Coates. To conclude the ceremony the National Anthem was sung and guests were invited back to the Caves Hotel for refreshments at midday and entertained with live music by Gerry Thurlings and Steve Baxter. |
