| C.W. Stoneking stepped out on stage and it felt like a time machine had taken The Gov back to the 1920s and moved to Southern America. Stoneking has a unique sound and voice reminiscent of old world blues and style to match. The tour is promoting his new album Jungle Blues which is a collection of original blues, calypso and jungle music. It was inspired by personal experience including a time he was shipwrecked off the west coast of Africa. It is this depth of experience and honesty which makes Stoneking so appealing. Though it was hard to hear clearly from the back of room, Stoneking has no lack of charm with his songs and stories drawing you back to another time. He sings and plays with a rustic authenticity that cuts through to his audience. Playing to a packed house, Stoneking was accompanied by his brass band, the Primitive Horn Orchestra. A master with both words and the guitar, he put you right in the middle of his world with songs such as ‘Love me or die’. Later in the night, his duets caught the crowd with an energy and life that left many dancing even when the music stopped. Tongue in cheek, Stoneking has described his sound as “somebody making music” and that was exactly what was experienced last Friday night. |
