On 23 July 1869 a young Aboriginal woman named Harriett and her grandmother Mary, were travelling through Keilor. They were on their way to Bacchus Marsh when the younger woman became ill. They went to the house of Mrs Catherine Anderson and the kindly woman gave them shelter and food. On 26 July they bade farewell to their host and proceeded on their way.
After travelling a short distance, Harriett became too weak to continue and was forced to lie down from exhaustion. Mrs Anderson summoned help to bring Harriet back to Keilor, but the young woman died before any assistance could be rendered. A subsequent inquest found that Harriett had died from 'Consumption accelerated by exposure'. Harriett's death certificate states that she was buried in the Keilor Cemetery, though there is no record of it in the Cemetery Register. |
