GEORGE LEWIS, born in Wales, married JANE ROACH who was also born in Wales. They apparently lived in London by 1812, although their three daughters were baptised in Pembroke, South Wales. Their children were:-

1) JAMES LEWIS was born in 1812 in London and baptised (I think) on 11th June 1812 at Mandrew, Pembroke in Wales. He married CLARISSA COMBES on 22nd January, 1843 in the parish church of Saint Pancras, County of Middlesex (London). Her father was JAMES COOMBS. James Lewis was a carpenter and built house frames. They lived in Charlton Street, St Pancras. On 3rd June, 1853, James and Clarissa with their four children, and also James's three sisters, embarked at the Port of London on the ship Sussex and arrived at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 17th September, 1853.
Clarissa died at Kangaroo Flat in 1887 James died at Murphy's Creek on 4th October, 1899 aged 87 years, he was buried on the 6th, at Kangaroo Flat Cemetery.
Issue:
a) GEORGE JAMES LEWIS baptised 3rd December, 1843 at St Pancras Old Church, Middlesex (IGI). Came to Victoria on the Sussex with his parents in 1853.
George and his brother, John arrived at Nockatunga Station, which is on the Wilson River in far south-west Queensland, on 29th June, 1874. They went there to fence the station which was owned by Mr. Herbert Bristow Hughes of Adelaide, Mr Tom Ilbery was the manager. He appears on the Queensland Electoral Roll of 1876 and 1877, with his brother John, electorate of Warrego, their residence is given as at Nockatunga Station. Then from 1879 to 1883 he appears as resident at Corongola Station, also in the Warrego electoral district. Next he is listed on the Gympie electoral district, from 1884 to 1895, resident in Channon Street, Gympie. He started as a mining secretary at Gympie but latter became an accountant.
On 8 May 1886 George married CATHERINE MARIA HUGHES at Riversleigh, Gympie, Queensland. They had six children;
MAUDE FLORENCE 1887; IVAN GEORGE 1888; NORAH JOYCE 1889; CYRIL PAUL 1690; GERALD JOHN 1895 and GLORIA JUSTINE 1897.
George James Lewis died on 10th April, 1917 and is buried in Gympie cemetery.
b) MARY JANE LEWIS born c.1845. Came to Victoria on the Sussex with her parents as a child in 1853. She was married on 8th September 1864 to the Reverend Elijah Percy SUTTON at St Mary's Church, Kangaroo Flat, Victoria (RegNo.02474). She died at Raywood, Vic.

c) CLARISSA LEWIS (my gg grandmother) baptised 23 April, 1848 at St Pancras Old Church, Middlesex, London. In 1853 she arrived in Melbourne, Victoria with her parents and siblings in 1853. She was married on 4th May, 1870 at Kangaroo Flat, Victoria, to EDWARD SILKE son of John Gill Silke and Anne (nee DATE). (RegNo.1433) They had five children:- EDWARD LEWIS 1871-1965; MABEL 1873-1953; ERNEST GEORGE 1883 and HAZEL MERLE 1894. Clara died on 7th November, 1935 at Murphy's Creek- and is buried at Tarnagulla, Victoria.

d) JOHN BREWER LEWIS was baptised on 26th January, 1851 at St Pancras, Middlesex, London, England. Came to Victoria with parents in 1853. Went to Nockatunga in Queensland with his brother George in 1874 where he was listed on the Queensland electoral roll of 1876 and 1877, for the electoral district of Warrego. He appears on the Charters Towers electoral roll, firstly as resident at No. 1 and 2 Duke of Wellington from 1879 to 1886, them secondly as a publican, of the Court House Hotel in Gill Street, Charters Towers, during the years 1889-95. In 1896 he married Emma SAYERS (daughter of Robert Sayers) at Charters Towers (Cert. 1083) A son, Noel Sayer LEWIS was born on 25 December 1699 at Charters Towers (Cert. 006321)

2) MARTHA LEWIS was born c1825 and baptised on 20th April 1825 at St Michael's, Pembroke, Wales. Came to Australia on the Sussex with brother James. Married a Mr LORIMER. Martha died in Victoria.

3) JANE LEWIS was born c1826 and baptised on 28 April 1826 at St Michael's, Pembroke, South Wales. Married WILLIAM CLEAVES at St Pancras, Middlesex. Came to Australia on the Sussex with her brother James. She was buried on 5th March, 1914 at Gordon, Victoria, Australia.

4) ELIZABETH LEWIS was born in c1829 and baptised on 8th July 1829 at St Michael's, Pembroke, South Wales. At the age of 11 years, she went to London to live with her eldest brother, James and his wife. Came to Australia on the Sussex in 1853. She married DAVIS CALWELL on 21st October, 1856 at St Johns Church of England, Melbourne, Victoria. They had 12 children. Elizabeth died on 2nd February, 1910 at Ballarat and was buried on 3rd February in the Gordon Cemetery, Victoria. (ARTHUR CALWELL who was the leader of the Australian LaborParty during the 1960's was her grandson).
