George Albert Howe and his family

f) GEORGE ALBERT HOWE (1826-82)

George was born on 12th February, 1826 at Wybourn's Farm on the Isle of Sheppey, in Kent, England. He was the sixth child of eleven children born to his parents:- Baldwin Richard Duppa Howe and Frances Ann (SWIFT). George was baptised on 16th March, 1826 at the Minster parish church of St Mary and St Sexburga, known commonly as the Minster Abbey.

He arrived at Port Phillip c1850 from Chatham, and worked in his trade as a miller in Melbourne. On gold being discovered at Bendigo he went to the diggings there, early in 1852,-and joined into a partnership with a Mr. Rogers and Mr. W. Hartlett, as storekeepers at Golden Square, (the Union Store). The firm under the style of Howe, Rogers & Hartlett carried on business for some years, supplying goods to the the residents on the Bendigo gold fields and also the McIvor diggings.

George was married, on 30 November 1852 at St. Peters, Church of England, Melbourne to ELIZABETH DATE SILKE the eldest child of John Gill SILKE and his wife Anne (nee DATE). By 1855 they were living at Specemin Hill, Head of Long Gully, Bendigo,where George is listed as a miner. They lived in Inglewood Street, allongside the 'Union Hotel' which was owned by his father-in-law, John Silke. In 1858 George was a publican at Woodstock-on-Loddon Plains where there were two hotels during the height of the 'gold days'(there is no sign of this village now excepting, for an old brick chimney).

In 1865 George took the 'Fleece Inn' on Charleston Road, Sandhurst (now Bendigo) where he was publican untill, his death. (The 'Fleece Inn' is still licenced and operating as a hotel in Bendigo). Lizzy, his wife, was confined eleven times, she died on 2nd August,1871 just one month after giving birth to a boy, (George Albert Jnr. who only lived for six months). She was interred in the Back Creek Cemetery, Sandhust (now called Bendigo General Cemetery) an 4th August,1871.

George remarried on 31 August 1B77 to Mrs Elizabeth Dale, of Sandhurst, a w1dow (dau. of George Gaylard and Anna Senior) at St. Andrew's Presbterian Manse, Sandhurst. George died on 23rd August 1882 at the Fleece Inn, he was buried in the Bendigo General Cemetery on 25th August, 1882.

Children of George & Lizzy Howe:-

I. George Albert, born July, 3rd 1854 at Golden Square and died in 1855.

2. William George, born April, 27th 1856 at Specimen Hill, Long Gully, Sanhurst. He married Mary CHARLESWORTH at Bendigo on 19 Sept, 1883. Died in October 1928 at Bendigo and buried in the Bendigo General Cemetery on 15 October 1928.

3. Frank, born 3 February 1858 at Woodstock-on-Loddon Plains, Victoria. Married Louisa Harriett POWLES in 1888. He died 31 July 1931 at Essendon, Victoria.

4. John Baldwin, born 13 November 1859 at Woodstock. Married 4 May 1904 at Murphy's Flat to Mabel SILKE. Jack 16 October 1934 at Deniliquin in N.S.W. and was buried at Bencrigo General Cemetery on 18 October 1934.

5. Jane Elizabeth (Bessie), born 28 September 1861 at Woodstock, Loddon Plains. Married 29th April 1891 at Eaglehawk to William Godfrey PARRY. Died July, 13th 1?49 at Nathalia, Victoria.

6. Harriet, born 10 June 1863 at Woodstock, Victoria. She married James Jasper BRIGHT. She died 24th September 1915 at Derby in Victoria.

7. Lillian Mary, born on 20 May 1865 at Charleston Road, Sandhurst. Married William Aitcheson CAMPBELL at St. Paul's, Bendigo, on 17 November 1897. Died c.1947. They lived at Numurka in Victoria.

8. Fanny Louisa, born 20 May 1865 at Charleston Rd. Sandhurst. Married William Henry ENDERS. Died in 1942. Farmed near Stanhope in Victoria.

9. Emily Silke, born October, 16th 1867 at White Hills, Bendigo. On 5th April 1900 at 'Arrabury Station' in S/W Queensland she married Joseph Whittington SMITH (who was the Officer in Charge of Border Customs at Beetoota) they were living at Beetota in S/W Queensland, near Haddon corner, in 1901. Joseph died at Cleveland in Oueensland on 5th April 1929. Emily may have had a hotel at Charters Towers in the 1920/30's. It is thought that she died 7 August 1927 at Prahran in Victoria and was buried at Cheltenham, Vic.

10. Stillborn twins, 1869

11. George Albert, born July, 4th 1971 at Sandhurst. Died 18 January 1872 at Sandhurst, buried at Bendigo General Cemetery.
