Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated began in 1984 as an unusual community museum, Australia's first ecomuseum, focussing on Melbourne's western region. It's mission statement is to 'actively involve the people of Melbourne's west and others in documenting, preserving and interpreting the richness and depth of the region's social, industrial and environmental history'.
From 1989, the Living Museum has been operating from a base in Pipemakers Park, Maribyrnong, formerly an industrial site associated with two major industries - meat-preserving and pipe-making (on the Register of the National Estate). The Museum's activities have included a number of oral history projects; heritage studies and site surveys; publications; exhibitions; displays; art works; workshops; talks; tours and festivals. It seeks to create opportunites for many individuals and groups from a multi-cultural population to discover and use a local resource. It also tries to foster local/regional identity and an understanding of local environment and heritage and connections to broader national themes.
