| Vale DAVID (DINGA) Bell December 1933 to June 2007
It is with deep regret that I convey to you all of the death of David Bell. David, better known to us all as Dinger, had not been in the best of health for the past year or so and on Friday the 29th of June 07 passed away. Dinger will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and especially by those at the Geelong Jazz Club as his passing will be a very big loss to our Club both in knowledge of the club workings and the dedicated hard work he put in a very very tong time as a committee member. This year Dinger chose not to stand for committee due to ill health. We say thank you Dinger for all you have done for our club. Rest in peace. Bas All club members will be saddened by the death of Dinga after a prolonged illness. David joined the club 1989. He had a life-long enjoyment of jazz in all its forms, and was knowledgeable about it. He became a member of the committee at the Annual General Meeting in 1991 and would have served as a member of the committee until the end of2006, when his health no longer allowed him to continue. He was the type of committee person that any club would want. He willingly involved himself in all activities and took on many responsibilities. His life experience, and his work in food services, club and venue management made him absolutely invaluable. He knew where to buy things through the trade, where good second hand products were to be found, how to set up for functions, and what useful item was in his shed. I never ceased to be amazed by what he could produce from his shed when it was needed. He was usually the first to volunteer to take on a responsibility. He was always willing to take on the dirty jobs. He was a great trouble-shooter. David was a great people person. He worked diligently as membership officer. His enjoyment in conducting the club night raffles was obvious, and he was so sincere in his happiness when prizes were won. When the club moved to Vines Road Community Centre, David quickly became involved in the running of the Centre, and became a member of the Centre's Committee of Management. The same enthusiasm and effort that he put into the Jazz Club was put into the Community Centre. His work at Vines Road enhanced the reputation of the club and cemented the club's relationship with the Centre. A simple statement I found in the minutes of a committee meeting from May 1995 summed up the way Dinga did things: Jazz at the Green: Problems with organisation at Queenscliff Golf Club end. David Bell saved the day. (minutes 11.05.95). It was typical Dinga: problem? no fuss, fix it, and let's get on with the show. Dinga was a sincere, loyal and diligent worker for the club and its members. There will be a real void at club functions. We will all miss him. Rest in peace. Dave P. David was a long time member of the Geelong Jazz Club and had served as a Committee member for 15 or so years. He was a tireless worker especially behind the scenes, he could always manage to get what was wanted and have it there for you when it was needed. Some would say he was grumpy but that was Dinger, it was being that way that kept him going, beneath the exterior he showed the world, was a very caring man. He has been in poor health for a number of years but it was only recently that it got him down, when he could no longer enjoy a cold beer, you knew he was crook. Dinger ' was a true friend, a very private person and he will be sadly missed by us all. Bev Hayward |
