RESOURCE RAMBLINGS – OCTOBER 2005

Hi everyone! Hope this edition of the newsletter finds you all fighting fit with a bit of a bounce in your step now that Spring is here.

AROUND THE HOUSE:

It’s been another busy few months at the Centre.
Firstly, our AGM was held on 29th August. The meeting was well attended by Centre and Council staff as well as members of the Community. Chris Elliot, Community Health Nurse from IDHS gave an interesting talk about the Health Service and what it has to offer the Community, and then everyone tucked into afternoon tea. Congratulations to all the newly elected office bearers and committee members.
The Centre celebrated Adult Learners’ Week from 1st to 8th September with various activities and displays. The major event held was the launching of the ACFE CD which we combined with our August Community Morning Tea. Approximately 30 people attended including the Resident’s of the Hostel and staff from the Pyramid Hill Neighbourhood House. Ken Peake had us all laughing reading his special brand of poetry and Fiona Gale entertained us with some wonderful circus acts. Morning tea was once again a yummy affair, which we all enjoyed.
We also hosted a Grant Writing workshop at the Senior Citizens on the 6th September. The workshop, which was conducted by DVC, was to assist Community Group members and individuals on how and where to apply for Government funding for their projects. It was a very informative evening, enjoyed by all who attended.
The Centre has a variety of courses on offer for Term 4 including 3 computer classes and a Women Get Elected workshop. Expressions of interest are also being taken for Courses, Shows, Trips etc. that the Community would like to see us offer or organize in the future. We already have some interesting and different Courses in the pipeline for 2006, which should prove to be very popular.
Our first staff /volunteer training day was held on 18th October and proved to be a very interesting and informative day. Beth spoke about various issues and topics and everyone had an opportunity to have their say. More days like this are planned for next year.
We had another get together on schnitzel night on the 6th October. We made the night a mini “Graduation Night” for Gordon in honor of him passing his TAFE Course. The Centre presented him with a Certificate of Recognition and had his school certificates framed and didn’t he look the part in his very own specially made graduation hat? Very Spiffy! It was another fun night with everyone having a good time. Another night is planned for November to celebrate Heather graduating from the Leadership Program and it would be great if everyone could come along
The Walking Group still continues to burn up the pavements of Inglewood and surrounds and everyone continues to look forward to the walk, and of course a chat on a Monday. As part of a health promotion organized by IDHS, “Step-tember” saw people from three towns join forces and walk together in the month of September. The group joined about 50 walkers at Bridgewater and had a lovely walk along the Loddon River followed by afternoon tea and entertainment .A walk around Inglewood, an art therapy session and morning tea was Inglewood’s contribution. Our Wedderburn walk along the Nardoo Creek and lunch at The Community Centre is to be held on the 2nd November as the first walk in September had to be postponed due to the weather. On Monday 24th October we all met at Melville Caves where we started off with morning tea, (scones, slices and chocolates, delish!), then a walk to burn off all the calories and then lo and behold more food with a BBQ lunch that could have fed an army. It was a great day, once again enjoyed by all. We have also planned a 2nd Op-Shop Crawl and lunch for the 16th of November to Maryborough, which everyone is looking forward to. The Walking Group is a fun, friendly group, which meets every Monday at 9.00am outside the Resource Centre. Everyone is most welcome.

STAFF SNIPPETS:

Firstly, a very Happy Birthday to Catherine who is celebrating her birthday in October. We hope you have a great day Catherine.
Beth continues to work hard and is currently approaching (hampering!) anyone and everyone who will listen for funding so as The Centre remains viable in the future.
Bev is a very busy bee around the town not only is she the President of the COM, she volunteers at the Centre and is also on numerous other Community Group Committees. One such committee is the Blue Eucy Festival which was held on the 1st & 2nd of October. It was a really enjoyable weekend Bev and you should be commended for all the hard work you put in.
Jean managed to get her photo on the front page of the Loddon Times (again) for the Salisbury West Landcare 10th Anniversary field trip. Good on you Jean, it’s nice to have a media personality in our midst!
Gordon successfully completed his TAFE computer course with an overall average of 96%, a terrific result. Congratulations and well done Gordon.
Heather has finished her Leadership Program and graduated on 21st October. A big congratulation from everyone Heather.
Debbie is still putting in long hours getting the books in order and organized on to an updated computer program, which has so far been successful. Hopefully this will make your job a lot easier Debbie and we might even let you go home occasionally!
